1 St. Patrick s School Dear Parents and Members of St. Patrick s School Community, SUNDAY 12 AUGUST 19th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME John 6: This reflection is attributed to Richard Leonard and it speaks of where we find Christ and the importance of communion to our beliefs. I love the fact that as Catholics we believe that Christ is present in ordinary gifts of bread and wine blessed and offered at the Eucharist. We don't just believe that Christ is present in sunrises, sunsets and in natural beauty, we also believe that God comes to us in a special and unique way in the simple, ordinary things of life. And it is in what we do with these gifts of bread and wine that Christ is really present. The earliest Christians called the Eucharist the breaking of the bread. It is the broken bread and the poured cup given into our hands to which we say Amen and so affirm our belief that Christ is present here. We often need to be reassured of Christ s presence when we are in the desert periods of our own life. We can feel we are wandering around in the wilderness looking for some sign of God s life. For all of us who are broken in mind, body or spirit, or who are pouring ourselves out in love for other people, communion is precisely the time Jesus meets us where we are. Is it any wonder that the Eucharist means so much to us? May we never feel as though we are not good enough to be here, for Jesus has invited us to his table where we are loved and cared for. BOOK WEEK This year Book Week is being held from August and the theme is Find your Treasure. Mrs Dickinson has again been proactive and organised a variety of activities throughout the week, cumulating in a casual dress day where students are invited to dress to the Find your Treasure theme. There will be a parade at 2.15pm in the hall and parents and friends are invited to attend this event. It will be followed by a treasure hunt in the school grounds. At other times throughout the week students will be invited to read different CBCA short listed books such as Left and Right, I m Australian Too, The Very Noisy Baby and Boy (which was the recent performance by Meerkat Productions). Students will also have the opportunity to play Twister at recess and lunch on Monday and bring their favourite teddy bear to school for a Teddy Bear s Picnic on Wednesday. On Thursday students will be encouraged to not talk for a whole lesson just like the main character in BOY. So, students, please start thinking about your costume for the Book Week Parade on Friday 24 August and which teddy bear you could bring to school on Wednesday 22 August. 2 JUNIOR CLASS Students have been writing narratives, with a focus on using colourful semantics to help write our starting sentence. We are reading 'Let's Learn About Dreamtime' by Mike Ingram for our shared reading text and exploring the words 'winding', 'billabong' and 'jagged' on our vocab chart. The Foundation students have learnt one digraph this week which is 'sh' for shell. In Maths we are learning to recognise numbers on our number charts, to skip count and to know addition and subtraction facts. Every day the students are recording an aspect of their Maths in their learning journals. In Integrated Studies we have been learning about sustainability and the things we can do to help the environment. We have also been working on our Water Week posters which are coming along nicely. We have started a new Religion unit this week about 'Baptism and the Church' and we will continue to learn about it for the rest of the term. If any parents have photos of their children getting baptised, we would love it if you sent them to school with your child next week so we can have a look. Thanks in advance. SENIOR CLASS During the reading block the seniors have been reading a story called A Series of Unfortunate Events. They have been making predictions about what is going to happen throughout the story. We have been focusing on procedural texts within the writing block. Students have chosen an area to explore, focusing on creating a clear and concise piece of writing to follow. In Numeracy the focus is on Area and Perimeter and we have been engaging in real-life situations and activities to enhance their knowledge of these concepts. In Religious Education we have been focusing on the Unit ' Reconciliation'. The students are exploring what this term means to them and the reasons why people reconcile. Students have been involved in rich discussions with their peers. Students must have broad-brimmed or bucket hats at school every day. Students without hats will sit in the undercover area, out of the sun. They can sometimes become quite distressed if not allowed to play outside. The school does not provide spare hats if a child has forgotten theirs. Foundation following our Crazy Hair Day, coin line and hot dog lunch last term. We hope that you will join us again next year for Stomp Out The Gap. THANK YOU A huge thank you to all parents who recently completed the Insight SRC survey that was sent home. Not all families were randomly selected to complete this survey but we appreciate those people who took the time to provide us with feedback about our current performance. We are soon to have a mid-cycle review of our most current School Improvement Plan and your data, via the survey, will help us monitor our progress against our priorities from two/three years ago. SUNSMART Thank you to all students and their parents for the prompt response in relation to the wearing of hats. Karen has been checking the UV rating daily since last week and already the daily UV index is above 3 which is hat wearing weather. Even on cloudy days the UV level is high in Nhill so it is important that we wear hats to protect our skin and reduce the risk of melanoma. STUDENT ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES As we phase in the use of the SIMON software (specialised web based solution for schools), some of our procedures will be changing. We are commencing the new system of student attendance monitoring, specifically how we record student late arrivals, early departures and temporary absences. Please record this information at the time using the ipad at the school office (this ipad is for this specific purpose only and the SIMON KIOSK will be open at all times). If for any reason the software is not working then please fill out a paper note as is the current procedure. If you have any questions or difficulties with this process please speak to Karen in the St office. (Important to note: *we are not using barcodes, so please ignore this step. *students must not complete this task.) There is no change to the procedure for student absences (whole day or multiple days). Parents are responsible for providing an explanation for their child s absence from school. A note must be provided on each occasion using our templates or FlexiBuzz, or telephone the school on FlexiBuzz is our preferred method and it is also the quickest and simplest for parents. If we have not received advice of your child s absence by 10am on that day then we are required by law to contact you. Please contact Karen in the office if you have any questions about using the FlexiBuzz app.

3 SOME IMPORTANT REMINDERS Parents/guardians please note that during school hours you must enter the school via the front office only. Please do not enter via the side gate. The side gate is for use before and after school only. This is a requirement to assist the school comply with the Child Safe Standards. Please observe signage when parking at the front of the school. It is illegal to park anywhere on the school crossing when the orange crossing flags are up. Signage and painted lines indicate where and when parking is allowed. If it is difficult to find a park in Leahy Street at the busy times of day, please park around the corner in Church Street and walk to school using the school crossing. There is adequate space to park near the church also. READING AWARDS Maddison, Nessa and Thar Shue proudly displaying their reading awards which were presented at last week s assembly. KINDER VISIT Some photos from last week s kinder visit. Who are they and what do you enjoy doing with them? Mum & Dad, two brothers and one sister. We enjoy playing games, like tiggy. Best thing about St. Patrick s School / favourite subject I love chatting with my friends at St. Pat s. Art is my favourite subject. What can you share about yourself that no-one or not many people know? Drawing. If you could go anywhere / do anything right now, what would you do? I d go to Horsham to buy art supplies. FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION Thank you to Father Peter who came and said mass to celebrate this feast with our students on Wednesday morning. Our students did a fantastic job with the readings and prayers and their responses. Their behaviour was excellent and they learnt from Father Peter why we celebrate this feast day in honour of Jesus mother Mary. UPCOMING EVENTS WWSSA Athletics Six of our students have been selected to compete in this next level of competition at Warracknabeal s ANZAC Park on Wednesday 29 August. Permission slips are attached and need to be returned by next Friday 24 August. Father s Day Breakfast Invitations to our annual Father s Day Breakfast, which is scheduled for Friday 31 August between 8 and 9am are attached today. Fathers, grandfathers, and those like fathers to our students are encouraged to join us for this celebration. Please indicate the numbers who will attend and return the RSVP slip by Monday 27 August.
