Newsletter No 28 5 September 2018 How to say Thank You I read up a book drawn by its quirky title: Adulting: How to become an adult in 468 easy(ish) ways.* Even though I am out of the age range of the intended audience by about three decades, I thought I might learn some things. I did, like How to write a Thank you note. The formula went as follows: 1. Focus on the other person, i.e. begin You 2. List great aspects of the present/action/gift for which you are thanking them. 3. End with the Thank you Notice how the Thank you came at the end of the note, not the beginning. We need to actually revel in the good qualities of something before we can express thanks. Thanking too soon can cut short our chance to really appreciate what we have received but taking the time to linger in the enjoyment adds to our pleasure and the good feeling of the person receiving our note. The same can apply to God. We all know that we should be grateful but perhaps we have that sense of should because we haven t given ourselves the time to linger in enjoyment of the good things we have received. One of the integral parts of the Christian practice of Sunday was to take time to rest and enjoy. This is part of worship. No matter how energetic or committed we are, we need time to relax and take pleasure in just being. And when we have done this, we find that the words, Thank you, God just finish off nicely that time of joy. Loving God, slow me down some time so that I have some time to slow down and enjoy the good things that have come my way. Let me fill up on the pleasure of these people and things so that Thank you rises freely from my spirit. *By Kelly Williams Brown. Sr Kym Harris osb
From the Principal Child Protection Week - This week is Child Protection Week. National Child Protection Week is a wonderful opportunity for everyone in the community to think about how we can work together to keep all children safe. Importantly, we want to remind everyone that: We ALL have a part to play in protecting ALL children Even small actions can help to improve a child s future By building stronger communities, we are creating safer environments for our children Research has shown that a strong community leads to safer children. At Joseph s Wandal we believe the safeguarding and protection of our children is of paramount importance. According to Diocesan and legislative protocols, our staff are trained annually in student protection processes and policies. There are three designated Student Protection Officers at our school Mrs Jenkinson, Mrs Starr and Miss McLennan. Posters throughout the school ensure our children know who to contact should they have any concerns. Regular child safety lessons remind our children to RECOGNISE, REACT and REPORT when they feel unsafe. You can find out more about the role you can play at napcan.org.au. P & F Father s Day Stall We hope all of our dads and granddads had an enjoyable Fathers Day on Sunday and enjoyed the special gifts, which were chosen with such care at our stall last Friday. Over $1 450 was raised through this event! This money, will be used to fund new resources for our children s classrooms. The very hard working band of volunteers who set up and ran our stall deserve our thanks for giving up precious time to assist.
Sickness There is quite a bit of sickness around at the moment. To prevent the spread of infection in the school, parents are requested to keep unwell students at home. They will be held in the school hall over two days. These sessions will be 15 minutes long. As always, we urge all parents to book a Parent Teacher Interview. WHAT: Semester Two Parent/Teacher Meetings WHEN: Monday 17 September and Tuesday 18 September TIMES: 15 minute time slots from approximately 3.15pm WHERE: The school Hall Bookings are open NOW via Parent Lounge, and will close on 14 September at noon. Real Talk Sessions for Years 5 and 6 students *reminder* Real Talk is an organisation that is all about getting REAL on the topics of sex, relationships and personal identity. Based on Catholic Christian values, Real Talk provides up-to-date resources, presentations and programs that help young people to understand God s amazing plan for love and life. Staff from Real Talk Australia will be attending St Joseph s Wandal on Friday 7 September 2018 to facilitate their Let s Talk Seminar/Reflection Day for Year 5 and 6 students. This seminar will feature topics of self-worth, personal identity, good decision-making, love, relationships and puberty. In support of this Seminar for students, Real Talk s Primary School Manager, Nikki Lysaght will facilitate a Parent Information Session on Thursday 6 September The session will commence at 5:15pm and conclude at 6:15pm. Nikki has qualifications in Business, Journalism, Education and Religious Education. Nikki has 18 years experience teaching in Catholic Education and 10 years as an Assistant Principal Religious Education. She is passionate and creative, and loves making life engaging and interesting. The focus of this session is to empower parents, as primary educators and motivators in their children s lives, to feel confident in dealing with today s issues. The session will provide parents with a variety of strategies, tools and language necessary for these important conversations. The Catholic School Touch Challenge Schools from Rockhampton, Emerald, Monto, Yeppoon and Gladstone will compete for the Tony Novak Shield on 19 September. Representatives from Year 6 will take part in this event at the Rockhampton Touch Fields. Parents of these students are advised that a canteen will operate. Building Update The builders are now working above ground I ve recently learnt this means the footings and the like are completed! The slab for the admin building is due to be poured this week. At last week s site meeting, we started looking at external and internal colours for the administration building. The upstairs girls toilets will be out of use from next week as the builders will be starting the planned refurbishment. The new toilets will be built according to visibility and child safety requirements. The boys toilets will be demolished and then rebuilt later in the building project. Whilst these toilets are out of action, our students will utilise the toilets downstairs near the tuckshop.

APRE News Mk 7: A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark You forget the commandments of God and hold on to human tradition. The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So these Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands? He answered, It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture:this people honours me only with lip-service, while their hearts are far from me. The worship they offer me is worthless, the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions. He called the people to him again and said, Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. For it is from within, from men s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean. Creative Ministry Resources Pty Ltd What s Happening in Religion in Year One this week? Year One have been listening to and retelling the parable of the Good Shepherd. Jesus told parables to teach people and help them understand. After spending some time wondering about the parable students decided that Jesus is like the Good Shepherd, He leads us and we, like the sheep are his followers. Year One were wondering what Jesus had on his mind the day he told the Parable and what point exactly he was trying to make. It is pretty amazing that thousands of years later we are still fascinated by the stories Jesus told. Mass We look forward to a whole school Mass next Tuesday 12 September at 9am in the Hall. All are welcome. Please join us for tea, coffee and biscuits after Mass. We would like to wish Father Bryan Hanifan a very happy birthday today and look forward to seeing him next week at our Mass.
Continuing the Journey in the Catholic Faith 2018/2019 Cathedral Parish of St Joseph Calling all families with children eight years old or older who wish to prepare to receive the healing sacrament of Penance and to complete the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and First Holy Communion) To Register children: Please contact the Cathedral Centre Prayer Assembly Please join Year 6 and Mr Hunt as they lead prayer and reflect on their experiences from school Camp. Prayer will be this Friday in the Hall at 8.35am. Liturgy of the Word A reminder that Children s Liturgy is held most Sundays at St Joseph s Cathedral during 9.30am thoughout the school term. It is wonderful to see our students attend. All students (particularly those preparing for sacraments) are encouraged to attend. Thank you to our dedicated teachers who assist with this important ministry. Have a fabulous week! Rheanna Curriculum News Reading at home: How much does reading at home effect your child s progress? Does it matter if you skip homework reading tonight? If your child reads for 20 minutes a day, it means that they will read for 80 minutes a week or minutes per year. What does skipping mean for not only reading achievement, but also vocabulary development? Is it too important to miss? Parent Teacher Interviews: Thanks to those parents who have already made a booking. Discussing your child s progress is of vital importance to continue the key educational partnership between parents & teachers. What are some key questions to ask your child s teacher? How is my child performing when compared to the year level expectations? Is my child an independent learner? Does my child relate effectively to his or her peers? What important learning experiences are coming up in Term 4? Does my child work effectively as part of a group? What are areas of strength? What are challenges? How can I help? Have a great week, Janette
