3 Faithful Navigator s report SK Rick Bentine, PGK Faithful Navigator I want to thank my fellow Sir Knights for honoring me with your expression of confidence to lead the Mother Theresa Assembly as your Fateful Navigator for the coming fraternal year. Being an effective Fateful Navigator involves listening to fellow Knights, translating their concerns into workable proposals, and building consensus to implement them. Our Assembly faces membership challenges this coming year and we need to start recruiting potential Third-Degree Knights as soon as possible. Upcoming events; July 2rd Patriotic Rosary at St Joseph 2:00 pm July 8 th Corp. Communion at St Joseph 5:00 pm Mass followed by the Awards Dinner. Food will be catered by Rick s Smokehouse in Garland; price of the tickets is $15.00 a person. We will be serving Bar-B-Que beef, sausage and chicken with sides of potato salad, coleslaw, ranch beans and green beans. 4 Comptroller s Report and July Thoughts SK Chester Salacinski, Faithful Comptroller Report: Assembly membership stands at 200. The next Exemplification is scheduled for Oct. 6, 7, 8, It will be held in Hurst at the Hurst Convention Center. Flyers and registration forms are available. Remember, we all have a duty to recruit. 5 Admiral s table Religion and Science; Is There a Problem Here? Brother Knights, as a scientist I have often been perplexed by the controversy that this subject brings to many. Personally, I see the hands of our Creator in the wonders of the scientific world. And yet, there are many of my present-day colleagues who see it differently. On the other side of the fence, some religious scholars appear to have a real problem accepting some of the premises of science. We should realize that some of the most celebrated scientists in human history have acknowledged the existence of God. Renown astronomers, mathematicians, physicists and chemists such as Copernicus, Kepler, Descartes, Pascal, Newton, Faraday, Kelvin, Planck and Einstein, to mention a few, accepted the existence of a higher power. As we marvel at the wonders of nature, can we honestly think that all of it happened by chance? I submit to you that it almost takes more faith to believe that these wonders occur spontaneously than to accept the notion of a Creator. Having been fashioned in God s own image we have been gifted with superior intelligence, so that we may study and comprehend the word around us. Let us honor God by being open minded, eager to learn and let s enjoy this unique treat which has been awarded to us! Bible verse of the month: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16. 7 Captain s corner Chaplain Captain Emil J. Kapaun; Priest during the Korean War Father Kapaun was born in Marian, Kansas, 04/20/16 within the Diocese of Wichita and after starting the study of Theology at the Kentucky Seminary in 1936, he was ordained as a priest on 06/29/40. He was a hard worker and many enjoyed listening to his sermons. Father Kapaun had a strong passion for writing. He took care to write short synopsis of every day events and kept constant correspondence with family and close friends, including other clergy. In 1943, Father Kapaun had his first exposure to the military at the army air base in Herington, Kansas where he would assist from his home parish until Being with the troops, he became interested in becoming a full-time chaplain for the soldiers in World War II. On October 4, 1944, he graduated from Chaplain s School and was assigned to Camp Wheeler, Georgia. SK Adrian Rodriguez, PGK Faithful Captain Father Kapaun was sent to troops in India and Burma, however this took place at the end of World War II. From Burma, he would go on to assist the Colomban missionary priests and later continue to Ft. Bliss, TX in It was two years later on 07/11/50, that Kapaun's unit, the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division were sent to protect South Korea from invading North Korean Communists. He wrote a short letter to Bishop Mark Carroll back home: "Tomorrow we are going into combat. I have everything in order, all Mass stipends, my will, etc. The way the Catholic soldiers are rallying around the priest is edifying." MTA 2506 Newsletter July,

8 Captain s corner - continued During battle, he earned a reputation for being a fearless soldier, risking his life to minister to those in the trenches and foxholes on the front lines, saying mass, praying with the soldiers, and even administering sacraments to the dying or retrieving wounded soldiers. It was said of him, Numerous times Kapaun barely escaped with his life, including one time when a bullet hit the stem of his pipe when it was in his mouth. Unfortunately, in late November 1950, Chaplain Kapaun and US forces crossed into North Korea and his unit was overrun by Chinese forces. Finally, at age 35, on 05/23/51, after suffering from a blood clot in his leg and pneumonia in his lungs, Father Kapaun is led away by his captors to the prison "hospital", where he died alone and without treatment. Along the way, Father Kapaun asks the soldiers carrying him to stop so that he can forgive his captors and ask for their forgiveness. Before he goes, he encourages the soldiers to keep praying and keep up their hope, and he promises to pray for them from heaven. The first reports came from other prisoners who admired their beloved hero, their Padre. Many exclaimed of his bravery, constancy, his love and kindness for his fellow prison mates. One of the great treasures left behind by the good Chaplain was a four-minute radio homily given over the Armed Forces Network, specifically a talk over two of the Beatitudes: 1) Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God 2) Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. 9 Captain s corner - continued "A chaplain in the U. S. Army does many things in his line of duty. He gives his time, his strength, his patience, to encourage soldiers to fulfill their duties to Almighty God. He provides the means and the opportunity for men to worship God.
