The Communicator Knights of Columbus Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC Volume 21, Issue 1 Senior Editor: Lenny Tittle July 2018 Grand Knight s Message Brother s, I bid you welcome to the new fraternal year. I am looking forward to the year with our new Officers and Directors. I believe that it will be a very productive and rewarding year. To quote a very famous person - I have a Dream. I see Team work. I see Support. I see Knights stepping up and doing the job required of them. I see the winning numbers in the lottery. I see a year that we have not seen in a long time. I am not down playing any past Grand Knight before me, but as we all know there is always room for improvement. This, Gentlemen, is what makes us great and proud to be what we are. Knights of Columbus. I have ideas, you have ideas none will pass without a good fair unbiased judgement. No idea presented to the Council will be trashed without due respect. I am looking at the new and young Knights that have entered the Fraternity of the Knights. You, Gentlemen, are our prize candidates for the future of this Council. Your home away from home. We do not ask you to put in enormous amount of time. We do ask that you volunteer as many hours as you do in Church services. Come to the meetings on Thursday nights. Again, our Business Meetings are always the first Thursday at 7:00 pm. Socials are the third Thursday. A great time to bring the wife (or female companion) and meeting other knights families. 2 Grand Knight s message continued I promise a good time, good food, and mainly meeting our fellow Brother s. We are family orientated and to have more involvement with the family we need you to display your fellowship. If you are not greeted at the door find me it is very easy to correct a wrong. Our Officers and Directors meeting is usually on the fourth Thursday. All Brothers are invited to this meeting where ideas are voiced and vetted for the next Business Meeting God Bless you all. Hopefully a year we will not forget (good or bad) it will be a year to remember. Yours in Christ SK Frank Strunk Grand Knight Council Felician Center Inc. is a Catholic, nonprofit, charitable organization sponsored by the Felician Sisters of North America and supported by the Bishop of the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina. Council will be collecting toiletries and gently used clothing for donation in support of our sister charity: The Felician Center in Kingstree, South Carolina. Please bring your donated items to Business Meetings, Socials and Officers & Directors meetings for collection. We plan on taking these donations to the Center sometime in August. 3 Deputy Grand Knight s Message Blood Drive Sunday July 15 at our ICC/CC Our longstanding partnership with the American Red Cross continues! Watch out for Heat Exhaustion, it got me! Symptoms: - Rapid pulse - Muscle or stomach cramps - Excessive sweating - Weakness and fatigue - Clammy and pale skin - Nausea or vomiting - Fainting Make sure to get to a cooler location, rest, and rehydrate if you or your little one start to experience any of these symptoms. Left untreated, heat exhaustion can become heat stroke-- a much more serious condition that may require hospitalization. Joe O'Saben Deputy Grand Knight Remember-Knights proud of their membership will wear their name badges anytime they are at Church Page - 3

District Deputy s Message Brothers, Vivat Jesus! It s official I am in my last year as the District Deputy. So what does this mean you say???? Simply put I need a replacement. But it isn t supposed to happen until 30 June (no decision has to be made today). SO what are the basic requirements: * be a 3 rd Degree Knight (being a PGK is not required but it helps) * Willingness to travel within the District (The councils are: 6726 in Hanahan/Goose Creek,6900 at the Citadel, in Moncks Corner, and in Goose Creek. * Have a very understanding wife. * Attend the meetings in your District, you will be the Conferring Officer for all 1 st Degrees in your district. You will then be in charge of the 2 nd Degree team for District 13 The Creekside Team. The Position is determined by the State Deputy, and if chosen you are appointed and you will be installed with the State Officers of the South Carolina Council. This is a 4 year task, but each year you have to be reappointed by the SD. There a few other details but we can talk in person. (843) My hope for this Fraternal Year is that all of the councils make STAR. To have that happen everyone need to recruit! And as long as Brandon Chambers is our Insurance agent the insurance will happen too! That as Knights of Columbus we remember always what and why we are Knights. And above everything have some fun while doing God s work. My Friends to an awesome year! Pat Davis District 13 Vivat Jesus! Page - 4

Our Field Agent s Message A Blessed and Happy 4th of July to everyone. It s great to be back after two weeks away in Wisconsin. A couple of tidbits to discuss. First as expected, the Federal Interest rates increased again this quarter. This resulted in the increase of our annuities now to 2.6%. Our annuities have gradually increased over the past year from 1.5% to 2.6%. As the economy continues to recover and Federal rates increase, it s safe to assume our annuities will increase, as well as the returns on our life insurance policies. Secondly as mentioned last month, the clothing drive for the Felician Sisters in Kingstree continues. If you have any clothes in good condition that you would like to donate to the sisters for the people of Kingstree (the poorest town in South Carolina) please bring them to a council meeting and we will be delivering them the last weekend in September. Yours in Christ Brandon Chambers brandon.chambers@kofc.org St. Francis Caracciolo Café Council members and wives volunteer at the St. Francis Caracciolo Café every second Tuesday serving from 11:30 1:30 at the Community Center of the Immaculate Conception Church. The Café is a Soup Kitchen Ministry that serves the homeless, needy and lonely people of the community. The café offers food and fellowship. Come join us and volunteer! Page - 5

St. Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697, Goose Creek, SC Faithful Navigator s Message For it does not matter what we claim to be, it matters what are and what we claim to be we The Knights of Columbus has been often called The strong right arm of the church. And to many, the Fourth Degree, is the visible arm of the Knights of Columbus. The Patriotic Degree is the ultimate completion of the journey into the Knights. A journey that upon completion, awards you the honors of full Knighthood and the respect of being addressed as Sir Knight. As I end my term of leading the inaugural year of this new and great Assembly I can attest it has been an honor. Just nineteen months ago a group of 37 Sir Knights gathered on a cold night in November yearning for change and wanting to form a new Assembly. Tired of traveling each month to one of three meeting places and doing very little to support the mission of the Order. Today as I write the last of my columns I am proud to say the St Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 filled that need and is now 102 members strong. Why? My primary goal was to recruit 100 members in total whether by transfer or by exemplifying new Knights wishing to achieve full Knighthood. Second, I wanted to achieve the Star award in our first full year which requires commitment, loyalty and ambition. Mission accomplished! To keep the Assembly growth positive will depend entirely on Council growth which requires recruiting and to recruit will require introducing one s self to the gentleman next to or behind you in the pews and asking them Are You a Knight? We are members of the greatest men s fraternal organization in the world and it still amazes me why each and every every Catholic gentleman is not a member of the Knights of Columbus. Interested? Talk to any Sir Knight about their experiences and what it feels like to wear the emblem of our Order and be addressed as Sir Knight. The requirements are you need to be a Third Degree member in Good Standing Vivat Jesus! Steven Gearhart, Faithful Admiral for Frank DeAsis, Faithful Navigator Page - 8

Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree Saint Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 July 2018 Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree Saint Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 The Sound of Silence: Isn t it a shame that we live in a society that so fears silence. We turn the radios on in our rooms, the TVs on in our dens, the stereos on in our cars, and when we are not near any of these places, we plug ipods into our ears anything to avoid silence. Yet silence itself is the language of God! I ll let you in on something I just recently learned: set aside a few minutes each day to just be silent, and you will find that you instantly become a more peaceful person. Imagine Jesus saying to you (as He said to His disciples), Come with me by yourself to a quiet place (cf. Mk 6:31). Fr. Augustine Wetta (from Humility Rules) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!! In essentials, Unity. In non-essentials, Diversity. In all things, Charity. A maxim of Pope St. John XXIII 2018 Prayer Intentions of Pope Francis: July 2018: Evangelization-Priests and their Pastoral Ministry That priests who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. Membership: Master Thomas Monahon has advised that a Fourth-Degree Exemplification is being planned for the coastal area near Myrtle Beach some date in October. Now would be a great time to talk with our Third-Degree Knights and encourage them to join the ranks of the Patriotic Degree. Protocol of the Fourth Degree Color Corps: As of now, there are no events scheduled for our participation. We encourage all to spend some time supporting our parent Councils and this Assembly in their efforts as they prepare for the new Fraternal Year. A new Color Corps Drill Manual for the Fourth Degree has been issued and several copies have been received. We are reviewing the changes, most of which involve proper wear and use of the new regalia. Our intention is to complete a thorough review and then conduct necessary training sessions to practice our commands and movements, and familiarize everyone with the changes. Page - 9

Sir Knights! It is vitally important that you notify the Faithful Navigator or Commander directly and in advance if you are available to assist at any of our scheduled service requests. If you are seriously interested in the Color Corps, indicate your intentions to FN Frank DeAsis or the Commander and help us grow! Adoration of the Holy Eucharistic: Every Monday through Friday from 9am to 6pm; every Friday following the 6:30pm Holy Mass until 8am Saturday; and every First Friday following the 6:30pm Mass the Most Blessed Sacrament is present for public Adoration in the Immaculate Conception Church Adoration Chapel. All are invited and encouraged to give Our Lord at least one hour each week. There s just such a profound beauty to knowing this is the Lord [in the Eucharist], and here I am being able to worship here when he s right here, in my hands and right in front of me. The Eucharist is the most important thing in my life. Without the Eucharist, I m not living, I m merely existing. From Video Catechism Veteran s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all continue to bring toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials throughout the year. These items will be collected and shared between the Walterboro Veteran s Victory Home and the Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran s Victory Home also asks for craft items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy sessions. The adult coloring books with colored pencils are exceptionally popular. Our Lady of Joyful Hope: The Felician Sisters in Kingstree continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of food, clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene items. We will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help with restocking. Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we will have a box available in which to put any donated items. The Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician Center remain humbly thankful for our donations and support. Respect Life As of July 1, over 9,130 babies have been saved! Every 30 seconds, a baby s life is taken by abortion. Human Coalition Over the next few months, we will include articles intended to provide information rebutting arguments for abortion. The articles by Brian Fisher are very extensive and are based on a global solicitation for comment and opinion. It will be published monthly with the following individual topics. - Rape/Incest - My Body/My Choice - Life of the Mother - Personhood - The Unborn Child Is Unfit/Unwanted - Abortion Is Already Legal Stop Trying to Change It This month we editorialize the topic of Life of the Mother. The third most popular question was how to respond when the life of the mother is at stake. It is my personal view that this is the only morally acceptable, although still extremely difficult, justification for taking the life of an unborn child. I have many good and thoughtful pro-life friends including some people on staff here at Human Coalition who disagree with me about this. They maintain there are no morally acceptable reasons for taking the life of an unborn child. I deeply appreciate that perspective. Both views indicate an intimate appreciation for the sacredness of life inside and outside the womb. One of the fairest discussions on this topic is found in chapter 3 of Feinberg and Feinberg s Ethics for a Brave New World, and I recommend this book to you. It s worth noting a few cautions and clarifications when dealing with this issue: the health of the mother and the life of the mother are two very different things. For decades, the health of the mother has been used to justify abortion for almost any reason. Because health is virtually impossible to define, a woman who is even mildly upset that she is pregnant can abort her child under this ambiguous phrase. Be wary of this critical distinction. Page - 10

Another twist of words to be cautious of is the health of the mother is threatened versus the life of the mother is threatened. Pro-life advocates generally maintain that abortion is not morally permissible if the pregnancy may result in a decline in the mother s health but isn t ultimately fatal. Gestational diabetes is an example of a condition that is contracted during pregnancy, but it normally doesn t kill the mother and is a treatable disease. Morally speaking, the life of the mother and child are both priceless. Thus, the child s life should be preserved, and the mother s health should be treated and preserved as well. In those very rare cases where the life of the mother is genuinely at risk, difficult decisions must be made. Sometimes issues regarding the health of the mother have nothing to do with the pregnancy. There have been numerous stories in the news recently about moms with cancer choosing to bear their children while refusing potentially lifesaving treatments in order to preserve the lives of their children. Sometimes the mother survives; other times the mother dies. I m not sure any greater examples of maternal courage and sacrifice exist. In cases where the life of the mother is genuinely threatened either because of the pregnancy or because of a pre-existing condition that can t be treated because of the pregnancy, the family must make heartrending decisions. Prayer, comfort, support, and compassion should be extended to all during this time. In all cases, however, I must stress that all medical and spiritual options, tools, and procedures should be implemented to attempt to preserve BOTH lives. All life is precious, and all innocent life should be protected. With unwavering hope, FOR LIFE! We continue to affirm that abortion will not be ended in the Courts It will be ended in our Culture! So Every Child Makes Their Mark, Brian Fisher Co-Founder and President, South Carolina Citizens for Life The first civil right is the RIGHT TO LIFE! The Issues That Matter to Us: South Carolina Citizens for Life, Inc., is a non-profit, single issue, right-to-life organization devoted to restoring legal personhood to the unborn and to protecting innocent human life by eliminating abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia from our society. Here is a list of some of their activities: Develop and maintain educational programs factually depicting the growth and development of the unborn child. These programs are age-appropriate for use in schools as well as adult programs for use by colleges, universities, churches, civic groups, etc. Develop and maintain similar educational programs on the issues of abortion, abortion alternatives, euthanasia, and infanticide, and their related topics. Provide educational materials such as films, books, slides, videos, pamphlets, etc., to interested schools, individuals, churches or organizations. Publish regularly alerts to provide current information on recent events related to the previously mentioned topics. Provide information to the public and to women or families faced with an unplanned pregnancy about where they can go for help. Support appropriate legislation which helps protect the basic right to life of all innocent human beings. Develop and maintain a grassroots network of South Carolinians who advocate for right to life issues with their elected representatives. Provide knowledgeable individuals from the fields of medicine, law, and ethics to participate in seminars and media programs on the above topics. The SCCL office also serves as a referral center for girls, women and families facing unplanned pregnancies. You can look in the Yellow Pages under the heading "Abortion Alternatives," or call, toll-free, 1 (800) 848-LOVE, any time, day or night, to find the nearest Crisis Pregnancy Center in your area. You ll find someone who genuinely cares about what happens to you and your unborn baby. 12 National Right to Life - Quick Facts History Repeats Itself: Dred Scott (1857), 7-2 decision Denied citizenship to an entire class of people based on race. Property rights of slaveholder trump the interests of the slave, who has no rights. Sought to decide the slavery issue once and for all but led to the Civil War. Overturned by Congress in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments. Roe v. Wade (1973), 7-2 decision Denied personhood to an entire class of people based on development. Privacy rights of mother trump the interests of the unborn child, who has no rights. Sought to decide the abortion issue once and for all, but over thirty years later the country is still divided. Ironically, Roe relied on the 14th Amendment, which restored the human dignity that the Court had stripped from persons of African descent, to deny that dignity to the unborn over 100 years later. We will continue to do battle on behalf of the unborn at every turn. You are encouraged to visit the National Right to Life website at for additional information. Join us to help make a difference. It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion. It draws attention to the evil of abortion through the use of a three-point program: Prayer and fasting Constant vigil Community outreach Shawn Carney President/CEO, 40 Days for Life Please save these dates: Saturday, July 21 st - Third Saturday of every month Priests for Life Prayer Vigil, 8am. The organization, Priests for Life, has called for each Catholic to pray fervently for the closing of their local abortion facility. Please join us for the Rosary and prayers at the Planned Parenthood Center at 1312 Ashley River Road (corner of Hwy 61 & Fuseler.) PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF JULY: The Month of the Precious Blood of Jesus The Catholic Church dedicates the month of July to the Precious Blood of Jesus, which was "shed for the many, for the remission of sins" (Mt. 26:28). Like the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Precious Blood has long been venerated for its role in our redemption. Included are two brief prayers and their explanations: Prayer to Jesus This short prayer calls to mind the Precious Blood of Jesus and asks Christ for His aid. It is a type of prayer known as an ejaculation or aspiration a short prayer meant to be memorized and repeated throughout the day, either alone or in combination with longer prayers. Page - 12

We therefore pray Thee, help Thy servants: whom Thou has redeemed with Thy Precious Blood. Prayer to the Eternal Father Christ shed His Blood for our salvation, and we in turn should join in His sacrifice by offering to God the Father the Precious Blood of Christ. In this prayer, we are reminded that repentance for our sins goes hand in hand with the struggles of the whole Church and concern for the souls in Purgatory. Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ in atonement for my sins, and in supplication for the holy souls in purgatory and for the needs of holy Church. PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our citizens, and for an end to the continuing, and seemingly escalating, senseless violence in our country. Also, pray and for the safety of all members of Law Enforcement, Fire Service and Emergency Services. Let us also pray that our national leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom and Right to Life with positive effects on our entire Country. PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your continued prayers for SK Jerry Caoile and SK James Baker as they continue their studies for the Diaconate program, and for our Adorno and Diocesan Seminarians and those other young men and women progressing in their religious discernment and studies. PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our military servicemen and women - those who are now where many of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as those in public safety. Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military life. Keep them close to You and help them live the Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their Country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And Lord, grant that, when their service is finished, they may return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their fellow man and Country. Amen. It is a great time to be a Catholic and always a great time to be an active Knight. We ask all Sir Knights to keep actively recruiting our patriotic Knights. GOD IS GREAT - ALL THE TIME! ALL THE TIME - GOD IS GREAT! Note from the Editor I am looking for a Brother Knight who would be willing to co-edit and publish our Council Newsletter-The Communicator.
