2 Grand Knight: Russ Whited Deputy Grand Knight: Michael Cousino Our District Picnic on 8th October was a success for ICCC. We became the Horseshoe Champions. We now have the traveling trophy! Operation Hope and 40 Days for Life have really taken over October. What a pleasure to participate and serve. We have at least one more collection for Operation Hope and 40 Days for Life ends 6th November. Speaking of The Operation Hope Auction Social was an unbelievable success with a Full House. Thank you all that attended and donated. I have to tell you of the jitters behind the scene. Two days before the event, there were 12 RSVP's! Of course, you all realize RSVP's are a vital part of planning. The age old dilemma buying and preparing the food. Gene and Sophia Alaura, were veterans in staying the course and preparing what they thought would be needed. Harold Phillips was a whirlwind of activity, he stayed the course and planned for the best turn out. And it happened! It is estimated 100 dinners were served! The last dinner prepared by Sophia was auctioned. Accolades to Gene and Sophia Alaura for donating and preparing the meal. Accolades to Harold Phillips for hosting and auctioneering the Social. Not to be forgotten are Frank and Carol Strunk, Ken Luengo, William Davis and the unstoppable Rita Stryszk! Thank you to Leonard and Cristina Tittle for serving the libations. I hope nobody has been forgotten. All this effort resulted in a RECORD $2500 in donations to people with intellectual disabilities. Thank you Knights, Thank you Parishioners what a testimony to generosity. Thank you Lou Alberto, chair of Community Center Committee. It is up and running and has had a successful rental. The updated calendar is up loaded on the Knights website along with social pix and much more info, check it out. November is a busy month with Operation Hope, 40 Days for Life and of course Thanksgiving. May you enjoy your family celebrations and have Happy Thanksgiving for God and Country! Let us remember the sacrifice our veterans have made for our freedom. The sacrifices range from minor to the ultimate. Thank you Vets, you are the reason freedom is not free. Please, take a solemn moment to thank all veterans this 11 Nov! Russ Whited, GK Office: Fax: Man, what a busy month October has been! Please extend congratulations to all the people that made the well-attended October social for Operation HOPE a huge success. Special thanks go to Gene and Sophia Alaura for the wonderful Italian dinner, to Harold Phillips for running all over the low country begging and borrowing items to offer for the auction, and to Jerry Caoile for keeping track of the schedule assignments for the Tootsie Roll drives. All in all a team effort granted, a small team but what a huge success! My understanding is that we collected almost $2,500 for Operation HOPE. Next up is the final Tootsie Roll drive at WalMart in November which must be an all-hands effort if we are to meet our goal. Brother John Flinn, District Deputy Brandon Chambers and I participated in a Second Degree hosted by the Citadel Council. We had three members from Council go through the Second Degree; Bill Huser, Matt Smith and Ken Luengo. Congratulate them the next time you see them. For those who could not attend, Summerville Council will host a Second Degree next Sunday. All First and Second Degree Knights are encouraged to participate in the Second and Third Degree when they are available less, and some are quite distant from our area. Also, a reminder that our December meeting will also include a First Degree. The great news is that we are nearly at our goal for fraternal year 2012, but don t give up just yet. We could reach Double Star Council this year if we keep up our present pace, and we are really getting some quality Knights. I m positive there are more just waiting to be asked. Forty Days for Life is now winding down but consider keeping your rosary handy year around since our battle against the abortion practitioners, pro-choice activists, and even many of our elected officials just don t get it! We do indeed need to continue the message of Fatima. A calendar change note about the Fourth Degree. Assembly 1900 will meet in the Community Center at Immaculate Conception on Wednesday, November 9 th. This is a reschedule from the 10 th. O&D meet at 7:30pm and the business meeting follows at 8:00 p.m. All Fourth Degree Knights are invited to attend both, with a reception to follow. (continued next page)

3 (continued from page 1) Also, as a small token of gratitude and thanks for the service of all our veterans, members of the Fourth Degree will be on hand Sunday, November 13 to present a small gift to all veterans in attendance as they exit Mass AFTER THE FINAL BLESSING AND RECESSIONAL. The Annual South Carolina state-wide Fourth Degree, the Patriotic Degree, will be held at the Wingate Hotel and Convention Center (formerly the Radisson) in Columbia, SC from February, Third Degree Knights, the sooner you make the commitment the better. We do have a limited number of specially designated rates for the Knights of Columbus at several hotels in the vicinity of the Degree but these go quickly. Contact myself or SK John Mallon for details. Do you realize that the United States is the only country in the history of mankind that ever held out a helping hand to the entire world, including its enemies? We don t know what the future has to offer us but. Thank you Jonathan.. IN HONOR OF OUR VETRANS: For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see, Saw the Vision of the World, and all the wonder that would be; Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosies of magic sails, Pilots of the purple twilight, dropping down with costly bales; Hear the heavens fill with shouting, and there rain d a ghastly dew From the nations airy navies grappling in the central blue; Far along the world-wide whisper of the south-wind rushing warm, With the standards of the peoples plunging thro the thunder-storm; Till the war-drum throbb d no longer, and the battle flags were furl d In the Parliament of Man, the Federation of the World. 4 SCOUTING REPORT Troop 777 has been very busy over the past several months. The Scouts have participated in numerous service projects including the river sweep (picking up trash along to Cooper River); the Knights of Columbus highway clean up along St. James Avenue and the Taste of Goose Creek. They spent a week in the Great Smokey Mountain in Tennessee at Camp Davy Crockett where they earned 58 merit badges, 23 of those Eagle Scout required. Their Scout Spirit and attention to detail was noticed and they were presented with the Honor Troop Award and the Distinguished Troop Plaque during the camp fire at the end of the week. The Troop just had their second annual Court of Honor on September 28 th where their long list of accomplishments was recognized before family and friends. Rank advancements are as follows: Tenderfoot-one, 2 nd Classthree, Star-two, Life-one, Eagle Scout-three (Boyd Austin Compton, Matthew Prosser, Eric Bickford). Two More Scouts nearly Eagle Scouts Matthew Hamlin and Logan Fitzpatrick. Troop 777 now boasts a total of 27 Eagle Scouts. The October camping event will be at Givhan s Ferry State Park. Future plans include winter camp at the local Council Scout Camp Ho Non Wah where they will enjoy outdoor living in the comfortable winter season. Merit badges will be offered that are not normally part of the traditional summer camp list of options, particularly Eagle Scout required badges. One of the unique events will be the Polar Bear Swim in the Bohicket! Brothers David Fitzpatrick, Tom Churchill (Charter Organization Representative, K of C 11991), Jonathan Fischer (Cub Master), and Dick Kohler started up Cub Scout Den 777. Efforts have been made over the past several years to get this very important youth program started. Thanks to the efforts of these Catholic gentleman and members of Council 11991, it has finally become a reality. This will go a long way to help develop our youth with good values and a moral code, as well as, insuring the future of Troop 777. The adult volunteers are in the process of getting the training required by BSA and the Catholic Church. Yes, we need to consider telling Catholic men what the Knights of Columbus is about; its founding by Fr. Michael J. McGivney; its mission to foster Catholic men in witnessing their faith through acts of charity as a fraternal and unified force in their church and in their community, and its ability to enhance their Catholic faith through active involvement. We need to promote more than membership! We need to promote the meaning and value of active membership in the lives of those men who choose to

5 join! Who needs to do this? We, all 180 members of Immaculate Conception Council How can we do this? Through this personal contact conducted before the candidate takes his First Degree. This action is more likely to get the candidate to take his degrees and to attend council meetings and functions afterwards. When you recruit an individual (this includes his family) seek to involve them in activities of the Knights that take place while they are waiting on their first degree. Benefits of recruiting new members: The council grows, there are more people to help with the activities, and new ideas on things that we can do and how we can do our current activities better. More hands make the work easier. Keep Christ in Christmas Christmas Cards will be sold after all masses on Service Sunday in September, October and November. They will also be sold at the 6 PM mass on Saturday before Service Sunday. Your help in selling and buying Christmas Cards would be greatly appreciated. Yours in Christ, John Flinn, Membership Director Looking For Squires Today's youth, the leaders of tomorrow, are looking for challenges, for responsibility, for faith and trust. The Columbian Squires provides young men with the means and the opportunity to develop in all these areas - to be committed and involved in meeting the challenges of our times. As the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, the Columbian Squires provide an exciting opportunity for young Catholic boy's to participate in Catholic growth and activities, and to become leaders now and later in life. Development of leadership skills in Catholic young men is the main objective of the program. Squires conduct varied activities of community and Church service, and social events. Squires can advance through higher levels of achievement, involvement and training. The age range for Squires membership is years of age. There are nearly 1,500 Squires circles, with more than 25,000 Squires and 2,000 Squires counselors throughout the United States and abroad. Since 1925, the Columbian Squires program has had a rich tradition of leadership development of our most vital resource - our young people. For more information, please contact Jonathan Fischer at , please see your bulletin, or talk to one of the Knights after Mass. fisch050@gmail.com FROM OUR FIELD AGENT Dear Brother Knights, When Father McGivney started the Knights of Columbus 129 years ago, he did so to protect widows and orphans. We ve heard it so often that we often forget about what it really means. To protect our family we usually have to look beyond our individual self-interest to protect those who are left behind. We frequently have to give up something today to pay for something that we may never use. In many ways, it falls under the umbrella of charity. Charity to our family. A year or so ago, when I sat across that widow who was insufficiently protected, it hit home to me. She did not know how she would complete raising her two high school kids. And then she had no clue what she would do after that either. It was the first time since I started working for the Knights three years ago, I didn t know what to say. I had no words of comfort. The check that was coming from the Knights for the protection her husband had, would cover the funeral and her for maybe a few months, but that was all. What a difference it would have made to her and her family had her husband had sufficient coverage. For their very existence they were going to rely on government assistance and charity. Simply put, the avoidance of this situation was the reason The Knights was started by Fr. McGivney. If you aren t sufficiently protected, or simply don t know if your are, please give me a call and take the time to have me come over and speak with you. Charity starts at home. Your Brother Knight, Steve Kramp Knights of Columbus Field Agent (843) or Stephen.Kramp@kofc.org

6 Council Church Roof Fundraiser Our council will hold a Southern Country Breakfast Church Roof Fundraiser on Sunday December 11, from 7:30 am until 11:30 am. Menu: Scrambled Eggs, Sawmill Gravy, Aunt B s Biscuits, Burbage Pork Sausages, Southern Grits, Etc. The Cost is $7 for adults, $5 kids 6 to 11 (at the door). Pre-selling tickets is critical to maximize our profit. Knowing how many people attending allows us to purchase the minimum amount of supplies. So to encourage everyone to buy tickets early we will offer them for $1 less if bought before Sunday December 11. Also, we will ask many of you to carry tickets with you so that we can have as many presold tickets as possible. This will be a fun event and once again give our council positive parish exposure. Contact Howard Jackson: howardja@sc.rr.com or phone: for more information. Creche Festival It is Creche Festival at Mepkin Abbey again! The Festival runs from Monday, November 14 through Sunday November 20, and then again from Friday, November 25, through Saturday, December 3. It really is a wonderful event and free, but donations are welcome. Usually the web site at Mepkin Abbey has information on this and other scheduled events. Contact Michael Cousino ( ) for more information. GIVE A Stamp Of Support Who would think that a stamp on a piece of mail could help the poor and underserved? Well it can, and the retired sisters of Saint Mary s College make it happen. The proceeds from the sale of canceled stamps assist the sisters in supporting their works of the Ministry with the Poor. Our council has decided to help the sisters by collecting used stamps which will be sent to them for their ministry. How can you help? Save stamps that have perfect perforations, are not too heavily canceled, and are not torn, cut or stained. Leave at least 1/2 inch on each side of the stamp when cutting it from the envelope. In the near future a drop off box will be attached to the Knights pamphlet rack in the rear of the church, but until that time you can provide your donation to Brother Knight John Flinn who will box up the stamps donated and send them to the sisters. If you wish, you may send the stamps directly to the sisters at the following address: Sister M.
