2 çrandxnight: RUSS Whited Deputy ranc(.%night: Michael CoLisino Why did you join the Knights? Is a question often asked to understand a Knights motive and level of commitment. The often response is, I would like to be a part of the Knights. To receive the benefits of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, takes a commitment of time. Brother Knights, I just came home from Knights Service Sunday. It takes 21 brothers to meet Service Sunday obligations, 12% of our membership. I know that 175 members went to church this Sunday. And yet there were 5 ladies and at least one hospitality minister that had to fill in for Our Service Sunday obligations. It takes a commitment of time to show Our Unity and Fraternalism. I implore members of to examine your conscious and make a decision to, "be all this council can be". I thank the parishioners that filled in for Our Service Sunday obligations, for showing your faith. This council is on a mission to recruit new members, to have more bodies for charity hours and Service Sunday. I ask all brothers to show your pride as Knights and wear Knights name badges anytime on Church grounds. "If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honor." Gospel According To St John, 12:26 I want to thank all that have come forward to set the wheels turning for this fraternal year. We have come a long way. We still have a long way to go. Thank you for those, who stepped forward to help brother Knights in need. We need calendar scheduling information. Are you getting s? Did you receive council history? Did you receive the Financial Beacon? If not, you are not getting all s. Please, verify your and phone number on Knights contact list. I will be happy to make corrections, just get information tome participated in Father Noly' s Thanksgiving breakfast, Thank you to all who helped. Have you kept track of your Charity hours? 4th August, 2011 is the next business meeting. There will be a special food treat. See you there! We've kicked off our fraternal year with a wonderful ceremony welcoming Russ as our new Grand Knight. The ceremony was well attended and everyone appeared to have a wonderful time. I would like to thank State Secretary Richard Gabriel for his motivating and inspiring words which we should all have taken to heart. As a Parish, we also had the opportunity to welcome back Father Noly with a reception. I don't recall the Community Center having that number turnout since it was our original Church and the sanctuary where we celebrated Mass. It was indeed a "FULL HOUSE." Father Noly was in great demand that evening, but I was able to remind him of his promise to complete his First Degree following his ordination. The next scheduled Third Degree is Saturday September 17, at Florence Council I am trying to assemble dates for the Second Degrees. All First and Second Degree members should seriously consider completing your next degree as soon as you are able and please let Membership Director John Flinn or myself know your intentions. The Annual South Carolina state-wide Fourth Degree, the Patriotic Degree, will be held at the Wingate Hotel and Convention Center (formerly the Radison) in Columbia, SC from February, Third Degree Knights, the sooner you make the commitment the better. We do have a limited number of specially designated rates for the Knights of Columbus at several hotels in the vicinity of the Degree but these go quickly. The next Blood Drive will be 18 Sept, 2011 Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, Galveston/Houston, Chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. I strongly oppose the recommendation of the Institute of Medicine that the Dept of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate coverage of three particular practices in almost all private health care plans: surgical sterilization: all FDA approved birth control (including the IUD, morning after pills and the abortion inducing drug, Ella); and education and counseling promoting these among all women of reproductive capacity. Pregnancy is not a disease and fertility is not a pathological condition to be suppressed by any means technically possible. The IOM reports claims it would have good reason to recommend mandatory coverage for surgical abortions as well if such a mandate were not prevented by law. Most Americans surely see that abortion is not healthy or therapeutic for unborn children and has physical and mental health risks for women which can be extremely serious. I can only conclude that there is an ideology at work in these recommendations that goes beyond any objective assessment of the health needs of women and children. The single largest abortion provider in the United States, Planned Parenthood, is celebrating the IOM's report. If the HHS does likewise and implements its recommendations, these controversial practices will be mandated for all insurance plans public and private without co-pay from those receiving them. 4 practices will be paid by all who participate in the health coverage, employers, employees including those who conscientiously object to Planned Parenthoods agenda. Without sufficient legal protection for rights of conscience, such a mandate would force all men, women and children to carry health insurance that violates the deeply held moral and religious convictions of many. This new threat to conscience makes it especially critical for Congress to pass Respect for Rights of Conscience Act introduced by Reps. Jeff Fortenberry and Dan Boren, (HR 1179), I am writing to all members of Congress to urge their co-sponsorship. The IOM missed an opportunity to promote better health care for women that is life affirming and truly compassionate. I once again urge the Dept of Health and Human Services to focus on the need of all Americans, including immigrants and the poor, for the basic life saving health coverage not on mandating controversial elective practices in ways that undermine the good of women and children, the consciences of employer, employees and health plan providers, and the common good. Please contact the Youth Director: Jonathan Fischer at or fisch050 gmail.com Dear Brother Knights If you've been a Knight for many years, I know you've heard the Knights talk about the value of whole life many times, but in the current market place, it bears repeating. The reason some of your money should be invested in whole life is for stability and for the future. If you plan to die within the next couple of years, buying only term insurance makes the most sense. Buy all you can for your family remember you won't be around to enjoy it anyway. Don't get me wrong, term insurance is great. (And the Knights offer very attractive term insurance.) It protects our loved ones at a very affordable rate. If you live as most of us plan to do--you bought a product whose purpose was to protect your family in the case of a premature death. It has served its purpose and by age 65 or 70 it has usually gone by the wayside. And then what? This is where whole life comes into play. It has guaranteed rates of return. It has cash value, and while it is increasing in cash value and death benefit, the rates will never increase. So after the term insurance is gone and our investments may or may not have returned at the rates we wish they had, the stable K of C life insurance policy is there to pick up the slack. Its steady growth over many years makes all the difference. it is always growing, always moving in the right direction, regardless of the markets. If you have a small policy, it will be enough to bury you. But if you have a large policy, or maybe two or three, you can borrow from them if you choose. Or you can simply leave them as a "gift" to someone else. Maybe that is your spouse, your children, or your grandchildren. Or you may have chosen to leave it to your favorite charity. Regardless, it will be there for you and for your loved ones. You're Brother Knight, Steve Kramp, Knights of Columbus Field Agent Office: Cell: My brother Knights
5 Recruiting new members is essential to the continued growth and well-being of our council and the Order. offering a man membership in the Knights of Columbus gives him the opportunity to improve his own life and his community. Membership allows him to experience the fraternal bond that Knights share while growing closer to his family and his faith. Our members help our communities and people in need in many ways by sponsoring blood drives or youth sports teams, raising funds and volunteering for Special Olympics and other programs for people with intellectual disabilities, holding food drives for local soup kitchens. Through these and other actions, they show prospects firsthand the great work that our Order does and encouraging them to join the Knights of Columbus. You can help Immaculate Conception Church, our council and each other by recruiting new members and maintaining contact with each person that you sponsor. Help us to be successful by doing all that you can to recruit new members and getting involved to make sure all our programs are successful. Please welcome our newest members to our Council, Louis M. Alberto and Michael Felesen, both are transfers. 6 Immaculate Conception Council No Goose Creek, SC Named for Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Date Chartered: 20 May 1997 Charter Grand Knight: Allen Nugent Charter Chaplain: Rev. Frank Palmieri C.R.M. Council Historian: G.T. Janikowski, PGK During the fraternal year , the pastor of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goose Creek, SC (Rev. Frank Palmieri C.R.M.) asked some of the state leaders of the Knights of Columbus to start a Knights of Columbus Council in Immaculate Conception Parish in Goose Creek, SC. Those same leaders that were approached by Father then asked the leaders and a few charter members of the only council at that time in our parish area, Council 6726 (Hanahan/Goose Creek), which was then a council that split its efforts towards 3 churches- Divine Redeemer (Hanahan), All Saints (Naval Weapons Station, Charleston), and Immaculate Conception (Goose Creek, SC). The Council (6726) was given the opportunity to move its membership to Immaculate Conception Parish, after which the State Council would then direct its attention to new council development in the Hanahan, SC or All Saints Chapel area. When that did not materialize, the State Council then directed its efforts towards developing a Knights of Columbus Council for Immaculate Conception Parish. After many scheduled meetings at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, which all men of the parish were invited to attend, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was about to get its own Knights of Columbus Council. The founders and first officers of the council chose the name Immaculate Conception Council, because they felt that as a catholic group, the name should relate to the church that all attended. Council 11991, the number which was drawn at random by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut, was assigned to the new council. Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC was officially instituted on May 20, 1997 under the leadership of Charter Grand Knight Allen Nugent. The council's first meeting was held on July 3, 1997 at 7PM in the now parish community center hall. It was recorded that all officers were present and council was now officially on its way! New committees were named and developed. The council treasurer, Tom Risso reported that there was $22 in the general fund and we had the required number of members to form a new council, 30 members. The South Carolina State Council also gave a state grant of $500 to assist the council with their efforts of new council development and to ensure its success! Council officers were officially installed after the 6PM Mass at Immaculate Conception Church on July 26, At the next meeting of council 11991, on August 7, 1997, Treasurer Tom Risso and Financial Secretary Ron Snyder reported a balance of $ and membership of 38 members. During its charter year, there were a number of firsts recorded for the council, each in its own outstanding way. Pro-life, has long been supported by all of the Knights of Columbus, especially the Fourth Degree (The Patriotic Degree). On August 9 1h,1997, Council started a memorial to the unborn (victims of abortion), by pouring the concrete foundation. Council 6726 (Hanahan/Goose Creek) also assisted with this endeavor. There were many who helped with this project, but none more instrumental than Wayland Moody, who was our member construction company. Many councils throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Phlippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, Guam and the Virgin Islands now promote, by erecting memorials to children killed through abortion, as part of the grassroots Tombs of the Unborn Child Initiative. Immaculate Conception Council joined with all of the other councils throughout the world to publicly support the order's Pro-Life efforts with this public display and to show how Knights are striving to protect the lives of the innocent unborn. On August 10, 1997 the first blood drive was held and organized by Joe O'Saben and it was noted that 46 units were collected by the Red Cross Bloodmobile. Our same brother Knight Joe O'Saben is still in charge of organizing the blood drives in our parish, and blood donations now total over 2,451 units of blood (14 consecutive years). On October 2, 1997 the Council's 1st first Degree was held. It should be remembered that the two new members brought into the council and who went through the exemplification then were Joe O'Rourke and Dr. Paul Vankevich. Joe O'Rourke was later installed as the Council's third Grand Knight ( ). December came quickly and when final reports were in for Operation HOPE (Helping Our People Everyday), which are conducted yearly for the Intellectually Challenged, and concluded during October November - $2,293 was raised. A supplemental spaghetti dinner was also completed and the total raised for the year amounted to $2, Membership was now being reported at 63 members. The council, through the efforts of its members, accomplished many things its first year. There was Service Sunday's each month, a Free-Throw Championship for the kids, Adopt A- Family, Family Week. Blood Drives, Life Chain, Operation
7 HOPE, Trash and Treasure Sale, Corporate Communion Breakfast, Memorial Mass for deceased members, Pro- Life March and other endeavors. There was also some fun along the way as well. The Order has always promoted family life and there was ample opportunity for this at family socials, parish picnics, Taste of Goose Creek, Corporate Communion Breakfast, Adult Christmas Party, and the Grand Knight Appreciation BBQ. There was the State Golf Tournament, Horseshoe Tournament, State Bowling Tournament and State Softball Tournament. Today's youth, the leaders of tomorrow, are looking for a challenge, for responsibility, for faith and trust. As Knights of Columbus, it is our responsibility to provide youth with the means and the opportunities to become personally involved in meeting those challenges of our times. For kids there was an Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party, Free-Throw Competition, and Altar Server Appreciation. Council also is trying to demonstrate that support of today's youth by sponsoring a Boy Scout Troop (Troop 777), with opportunities for assisting the Boy Scouts with merit badges, mentoring and instructor training, in special areas of expertise. Each of the years that the council has been in existence, the council has participated in the Order's "Family of the Year" programs, honoring council families who exemplify the values of our Church and our Order. Similarly, "Knight of the Month" and "Knight of the Year" have been recognized as well those Knights who best exemplify the four principles of our Order, Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Each Knight possesses skills and abilities which drive the member to fulfill a man's need to progress towards his full potential. Each month, Knights have been recognized for their commitment in five areas: Church, Community, Family, Council and Youth activities. Their direct involvement and personal commitment did not go un-noticed or un-recognized. In 2002, Council made a pledge of $25,000 to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, which was to be used for the building fund of the parish, primarily for the renovation of the Immaculate Conception Community Center and to update the kitchen which had fallen into disrepair and could no longer sustain the church's needs for such things as various church dinners, for all church organizations and council socials, etc. To make the pledge possible, Howard Jackson, a charter member and a past grand knight of council 11991, organized 6 Knights of Columbus Golf Tournaments to meet these goals that had been set with the pledge. Final results of fund raising for six consecutive years of golf tournaments resulted in raising approximately $28,000. All organizations of the parish, Phillipino, Portugese, Hispanic, Ladies club, Catholic Daughters, etc contributed financially to the renovation project which was an estimated $60,800 and over 960 man hours of labor. There were many people who helped with this project -with their time and hard labor, too numerous to mention, but none was more significant than the efforts of Howard Jackson, who was truly committed to bring this dream to a reality! Recruitment, retention and public relations have played an important part in our council's gradual increase in membership from the initial 30 members to the now present 175 members. Our council has had a monthly newsletter from its very beginning and has submitted articles in our church bulletin on a regular basis and news articles have been submitted and published in various periodicals. +4 Knights of Columbus - Council Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 510 St. James Avenue, Goose Creek, SC 29445
