Does the Bible have a happy ending, or not? Read the Book of Revelation and decide for yourself. A lot of things go very wrong until things begin to go much better. How many losses can be suffered before even a win feels more like a defeat? The question of happy endings has to be raised in the stories of most biblical prophets. The truth is, most of them were abject failures in their lifetime. Kings rejected their oracles and refused to change their ways. Prophets were often slain: according to tradition, Amos never returned to his flocks and trees in Judah. Instead, he was tortured by the priest at Bethel and killed, perhaps with the king s own staff, at the shrine where he prophesied. The king didn t change and the nation would soon fall to Assyria. Yet Amos warnings still ring in our assemblies today. Would Amos consider this a victory? God set forth a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ. I don t have to tell you: at the present time, all things are not summed up in Christ, in the words of St. Paul. Our generation is not the fullness of times, and the present reality does not match the future promise of our faith. Right now, in fact, a lot of things look pretty grim and not hopeful. Wars, natural disasters, random shootings, and gross inequalities make this an awkward time to claim every spiritual blessing in the heavens. The present hour doesn t deflect the truth of this great New Testament prayer. We re still called to be holy according to the context laid out in the prayer. Add up Paul s conditions: in love, in Christ, in accord with his will, in accord with his grace, in all wisdom and insight. Repeatedly Paul insists on the central context wherein we find the fulfillment of our hopes: in him. Want a better world? This is how to get it. Whatever place does not welcome you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet. Even when you bring good news, some people don t want it. A local school district decided to offer a cafeteria lunch that was healthy and free of processed foods. Kids threw it out by the tray full and opted to eat junk from outside vending machines. We can forgive children for not recognizing a good thing that s handed to them. But what excuse can we give for ourselves? Sunday after Sunday, the word of God is flung into the assembly like so many precious jewels. But it s often received like pearls before swine, as Jesus says. No matter what the gospel proclaims, some of us are never going to forgive a past injury. Despite every prophet s warning, we re not going to share our wealth or ease injustice. St. Paul can yammer on about the need for unity, but we're keeping our distance. Scripture isn t magic. The word has to become flesh.

3 Page Three July 15, 2018 \xin today s Gospel, Jesus sends the Twelve (and us Christian leaders in our respective zones ) to a mission (In general, to know, to love and serve Him in the realities of life). The Twelve, known as Apostles (meaning sent) had had the opportunity to see Our Lord at work and had been helped to reflect on the meaning of His example and message. Jesus now took a further step in their formation. He gave them responsibility to act without Him being present. Indeed human formation requires more than observation: it needs action. Their mission was not to recruit more disciples. It was to further (sow and teach) the Kingdom, the reign of God especially in the hearts of all. The living, transforming kingship of God was all that mattered! The directives given by Jesus did not deal directly with the nature of the mission. They dealt with what at first sight looked irrelevant: HOW THEY WERE (WE ARE) TO TRAVEL! He sends them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits (Mk. 6:7). In our challenging mission, Our Lord sends us out in pairs. He is our Leader and we are partners! Given the influence of evil embedded in the world, we need the support of each other in our confrontation with it. Community (the Church) is the body of the faithful and we experience how good and pleasant it is to dwell in holiness and harmony, working together as members yet one body, knowing that Jesus is in our presence, to stir up each other to love and holy works, bearing one another s burdens, comforting each other with the promises of Christ s return, and help the fainthearted, weak, and be patient with them. We need each other and are stronger together than we are individually. He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic. (Mk. 6:8-9). Remember: our lives here on earth are but a journey home (to Heaven!) but we have to make it worthwhile (toward the path of eternity) by loving God above all and in all through others AND are we travelling light, living according to the simple (not sinful ) essentials? 1. Seek God, not sin. (Amos 5:4) 2. Fear God, not people. (Proverbs 19:23) 3. Love God, not the world. (1 John 2:15-17) 4. Believe God, not the deceiver. (John 8:44) 5. Obey God, not your appetites. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27) 6. Serve God, not self. (Isaiah 6:8) 7. Worship God, not comfort. (Habakkuk 3:17-18) Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them. (Mk. 6:10-11) Our journey will not be smooth. We will encounter a bump in the road and the most difficult is our experience of wounded, broken relationships. And Our Lord s teaching when we experience pain and rejection? Shake the dust off your feet! which is Let go! Matthew s Gospel has something extra consoling to this gesture: let your peace return to you (Mt. 10:13). This reminds me of some lines associated with Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta: People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. HOW IS YOUR JOURNEY, YOUR MISSION OF FAITH? He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits. (Mark 6:7)

I like talking with drivers if I sense they are open to it. On this particular day, the driver was very talkative and told me about how he was an inventor. He had several patents and was about to sell one of his inventions for a ton of money. We had a wonderful conversation, and he was such a warm and interesting person. I asked him why, with his good fortune with inventions and all the work he was doing aside from Uber, he was still driving. He smiled and said, "There are still some people I haven't met yet. I never know who is going to get into my car next." What an amazing answer! Too often we live our lives in semi-solitude, walking around with blinders on so we don't make eye contact. We have our family and friends, but we don't get up each day wondering with excitement who we will meet that day. God puts people into our path all the time. Maybe we need them or they need us. But we do not walk through this world alone. If we choose to not be mindful of who is in our midst, we miss the chance to receive whatever gifts they may have to give. In the same vein, they miss out on what we have to share with them if we stay closed and quiet. Pay attention to those around you. God may come to you in the words of a friend, the request of a homeless man, or in the wisdom of an Uber driver. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
