3 Page Three December 11, 2016 My dear Parishioners, Happy Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday! Yes, one more Sunday and it will be Christmas! The Christmas Season really begins on the eve before December 25 th, and concludes on Monday, January 9, 2017 on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We know that the secular world s observance of Christmas has begun early in November with Christmas trimmings already displayed and Christmas Carols being played in the air. And we also have observed that after December 25 and before New Year all the Christmas decorations, the Christmas trees and lights are removed from display at the store and most homes. I would like to encourage all Catholic families to really observe the Christmas Season as it should be held by keeping the Christmas decorations until the last day of the Season, which is January 9, 2017 this time around. By doing so, we will be giving witness to others that the time of rejoicing for the birth of our Savior cannot be contained in one day. We need to celebrate His coming unto us for a longer time. Last weekend, I shared with you an article from the document of Vatican Council II on the topic of the Sanctity of Marriage and Family. This week let me share Pope Francis thoughts on Marriage, taken from the Synod of Family. The Synod Fathers observed that the initial years of marriage are a vital and sensitive period during which couples become more aware of the challenges and meaning of married life. In this regard, experienced couples have an important role to play. Our parish and every parish is a place where such experienced couples can help younger couples, with the eventual cooperation of associations, ecclesial movements and new communities. As your pastor, I would like to encourage the young couples of our community to be essentially open to the great gift of children. Along with that I encourage all families to consider the importance of family spirituality, prayer and participation in the Sunday Eucharist, and as couples to meet regularly to promote growth in their spiritual life and solidarity in the concrete demands of life. The vital factors in fostering evangelization through the family as the Synod Fathers observed are the liturgies, devotional practices and the Eucharist celebrated for families, especially on the wedding anniversary. This process takes time. Love needs time and space; everything else is secondary. Time is needed to talk things over, to embrace leisurely, to share plans, to listen to one another and gaze in each other s eyes, to appreciate one another and to build a stronger relationship. Sometimes the frantic pace of our society and the pressures of the workplace create problems. At other times, the problem is the lack of quality time together, sharing the same room without one even noticing the other. It would be of value for the young or vulnerable couples to make the most of those moments, to be present to one another, even by sharing moments of meaningful silence. Couples who have learned how to do this well can share some practical suggestions which they have found useful: planning free time together, moments of recreation with the children, different ways of celebrating important events, shared opportunities for spiritual growth. They can also provide resources that help your married couples to make those moments meaningful and loving, and thus to improve their communication. This is extremely important for the stage when the novelty of marriage has worn off. Once a couple no longer knows how to spend time together, one or both of them will end up taking refuge in gadgets, finding other commitments, seeking the embrace of another, or simply looking for ways to flee what has become an uncomfortable closeness. (TO BE CONTINUED ON THE NEXT ISSUE). Know that I am praying for all of you married couples and your families that God will continue to strengthen your love and devotion in the days to come. Peace, Fr. Riz

Our Scriptures provide us with wonderful images of healing, restoration, and justice. St. James reminds us to be patient as the coming of the Lord is at hand. But it is the prophet Isaiah who provides the encouragement we so desperately need. Our world and our country are in need of peace. We long for God's justice, which does not bring retribution but equity. Isaiah shows us that if we walk with God all of these things can be ours, not only in the future but now.
