3 Page Three June 11, 2017 Dear parishioners, Our parish celebration of Pentecost was so wonderful - especially because many of you really got into the spirit of the day. Also, our parish picnic fell on the same day that we celebrated the birthday of the Church. Last Sunday afternoon was really fun for me and I truly appreciated seeing many of you enjoy the wonderful hospitality of our different parish organizations in providing food, drink and dessert that day. So, let me take this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude first of all to the members of our Parish Pastoral Council who planned and organized the annual parish picnic; to my brother Knights of Columbus for their generous donation to pay for the picnic and to all those who donated the drinks, desserts and international food. Thank you so very much to all the parish organizations and ministries who participated in cooking or preparing the food that was served, and for those who supervised the children s games. Thank you also to the adults and school staff for overseeing the bounce rides. I also want to thank Tom Pavia and his team for being our DJ. Once again he provided our afternoon celebration with delightful sound and up beat music. God bless all of you for your kindness and generosity. Our community celebration of Pentecost reminds me of how our relationship with one another as a church must reflect the nature of the Holy Trinity. The Catholic Church dedicates the Sunday after Pentecost as Holy Trinity Sunday. In last Sunday s gospel reading, Jesus commanded the Apostles and us to baptize in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. In baptism, then, we profess faith in the Creator, in the only-begotten Son and in the gift which is the Spirit. There is one Creator of all things, for in God there is one Father from whom all things have their being. And there is one only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things exist. And there is one Spirit, the gift who is in all. So all follow their due order, according to the proper operation of each: one power, which brings all things into being, one Son, through whom all things come to be, and one gift of perfect hope. Nothing is wanting in this flawless union: in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, there is infinity of endless being, perfect reflection of the divine image, and mutual enjoyment of the gift. Our Lord has described the purpose of the Spirit s presence in us. Let us listen to His words: I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. It is to your advantage that I go away; if I go, I will send you the Advocate. And also: I will ask the Father and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever, the Spirit of truth. He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine. From among many of our Lord s sayings, these have been chosen to guide our understanding, for they reveal to us the intention of the giver, the nature of the gift and the condition for its reception. Since our weak minds cannot comprehend the Father or the Son, we have been given the Holy Spirit as our intermediary and advocate, to shed light on that hard doctrine of our faith, the incarnation of God. That reflection was taken from the treatise On the Trinity by Saint Hilary, Bishop 356 AD. I hope that knowing more about each of the Person of the Trinity and the role each of them play might lead us to a closer relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Peace, Fr. Riz

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. ~ John 3:16a It is often heard that today s observance is an idea feast, and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, Well, it s a mystery. Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a relationship feast, since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as The Hospitality of Abraham, depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an idea for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. ~Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Patrick Hill Workshop presenter: Ross Porter, Ph.D, M. Div. The purpose of the workshop: Life is full of loss; and trying to avoid the pain involved only leads to more loss - but we can turn loss into love, by learning to grieve well. Let s explore how! Cost: $25 RSVP by Monday, July 3 rd Online registration: making-grief-good For more information, contact Julie Auzenne at (213) or jmonell@la-archdiocese.org. St. Peter Claver After years working for the Church, I can honestly say that even though I feel closer to God, I still cannot fully grasp all that is God. The complexity of God has been the source of many volumes by many writers and theologians. The crazy reality of growing in a relationship with God is that the more you get to know God, the more complex God becomes. But I think that is true of human relationships as well. I feel like I can really peg a person one way or another after only meeting him or her a few times, but my wife and children continue to perplex me. Getting to know someone means you begin to uncover the layers of personality, feeling, and emotion that make up each human being. For those who see God as only a force or a light, God is simply defined. But for those who seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ, the God we find in relationship has many layers as well. But that which we do know for certain about God comes to us primarily from the person of Jesus. He called us to a way of life by not only teaching us about how to live, but by showing us the example of His life. Our God is defined by generosity, sacrifice, compassion, and, of course, love. The more we incorporate these characteristics into our own life, the more we bear witness to the true nature of God. Then others can see a God that is a little less complex because they understand Him through you and me. Our life will speak more than all the volumes written by all the theologians. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels 555 W. Jesus revealed this mystery to us. He spoke to us of God as the Father; He spoke to us of the Spirit; and He spoke to us of Himself as the Son of God. Thus He revealed this mystery to us. After He rose, He sent the disciples to evangelize to the peoples, He told them to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Mt 28, 19). This command is entrusted by Christ in all ages to the Church, which has inherited the missionary mandate from the Apostles. He also directs it to each one of us who, through the power of Baptism, are part of His Community. ~Pope Francis, Feast of the Most Holy Trinity 2015 St. Peter Claver SAVE THE DATE RESERVATIONS ABOUT TO OPEN! 13th Annual Los Angeles Catholic Prayer Breakfast Tuesday, September 19 th 6:30-9am Rosary, Mass, Breakfast and Guest Speaker: Dr. Scott Hahn Catholic Theologian, Author Professor - Franciscan University of Steubenville An exceptionally popular speaker and teacher, Dr. Hahn has delivered numerous talks nationally and internationally on a wide variety of topics related to Scripture and the Catholic faith.
