Look around your parish this weekend for glimpses of rose peeping out from the Advent purple. Deep into the heart of winter darkness, we find reason to share a little joy. This week s Minor prophet hints at why. Zephaniah was a seer who lived in Jerusalem before the time of Babylonian exile. Things were still good for Judeans in that generation. But they were about to go south - actually due east - to Babylon in a decade or two. As prophets go, Zephaniah isn t a jolly messenger. But he makes room for joy in the midst of a looming crisis, just as we do, because he s faithful to a God who s made a career out of rescuing us. Each generation must face the mess it s made and suffer the consequences. But not forever. Fear and discouragement aren t compatible with faith in the God of mercy. Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! It s hard not to get the message when it s hammered merrily in our direction like this. Joy is not an option for a believer. Or as a theologian put it: God will forgive everything but a lack of joy. Why is rejoicing so imperative? Well, just think how you d feel if you created a beautiful world, rescued it time and again, embraced it, lived in it, died for it - and that same world continued on in glum dismay despite the overwhelming avowal of your love. It s like the lover who can t please her beloved. No matter what she does or how many gifts of time, attention, and care she lavishes, he refuses to offer the gratitude of the tiniest smile. As Paul encourages the folks at Philippi, put away anxiety, show some kindness, and embrace the peace that makes no sense at all - unless you believe. John the Baptist preached good news to the people. Not all the news is good, as any glance at the headlines will tell you. And not everything John the Baptist is recorded as saying sounds like a lot of fun either. John was an old-school prophet, calling people to take a bath, wash themselves clean of the world s dirty ways, and start fresh. Because John understood that we all tend to slide into self-interest when no one s watching. I ll take that slightly bigger piece of pie if I think I can get away with it. John counseled the opposite approach: take half of the piece, and give the other half away. Did everyone who got baptized in the Jordan River stay as clean and resolved as they were that day? More importantly, do you and I keep ourselves as spiritually sweet on Monday as we present ourselves on Sunday?

3 Page Three December 16, 2018 My dear Parishioners, Rejoice! I say again rejoice! Christmas is so near, it s one more weekend! I hope that we have prepared ourselves gracefully for the coming of the Lord at His birth which took place more than two thousand years ago, and for the Lord s second coming in glory. The season of Advent also offers us opportunities to heighten our readiness to encounter Jesus reality and presence in the person we meet each day. I also say with confidence that our visit to the Blessed Sacrament leads us to recognize Jesus presence easily in every person we associate with. Let me continue to share with you points for consideration to appreciate more the devotion to Eucharistic Adoration. Any time we go out of our way to visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, we will be blessed. There are many ways we actually encounter Jesus when we come to church and sit before the Blessed Sacrament. Like the young boy who stopped in the church on his way home from school just to say hello to Jesus. The man who slipped into the back of the church and repented over and over again for the way he had sinned against the Lord. The teenager who said the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be three times. The woman who said four rosaries, one for each set of mysteries. The married couple who spent a full hour gazing at Jesus on the cross together. The priest who did nothing but ask for guidance and the wisdom as he tried to lead his parish community. Of course, not all of those kinds of visits are the same, and they do not all yield the same results. After all, we are talking about a relationship here, and in any relationship, there are degrees of intimacy. If we simply sit before the Lord for an hour, then we will be blessed. We will feel good about what we have done, and we will leave our time with Him feeling strengthened. Yet this approach to adoration has its limits. By preparing ourselves to meet the Lord and by having some knowledge of how the Holy Spirit works, we can increase our chances of receiving more from the Lord and of being changed more into His likeness. So let us look at a few ways we can approach adoration to see how the Spirit works in each of them: The first one is Fix our eyes on Jesus. We look to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2). The idea of fixing our eyes on Jesus is so simple that even a young child can understand it. As we kneel or sit before the Lord, let us call to mind our favorite images of Jesus. Some like to see Him with His Blessed Mother, perhaps in their home at Nazareth or at the wedding feast at Cana. Others enjoy seeing Jesus at the Transfiguration, radiant with God s glory as He talks with Moses and Elijah. Still others prefer to see Him feeding the five thousand or healing the blind man at birth. Many people hold two images of Jesus dear to their hearts: the crucified Christ and the risen Lord seated at the right hand of His Father in glory. When we begin to fix our eyes on one of these images and focus our attention on Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, a couple of things begin to happen. First, the distractions of normal life with all of its responsibilities, problems, and demands, fade away. Second, we begin to feel as if we have entered into heaven. We feel as if we too are seated with Jesus in the heavenly places. We get a taste of what it will be like when there will be no more suffering or pain, when we will be reunited with all of our loved ones, and when every hope and dream of ours will finally be fulfilled. The second way is Listening for His voice. St. Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians, I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him. As we fix our eyes on Jesus in this way, something marvelous begins to happen. The Holy Spirit begins to open our minds and fill us with spiritual wisdom and understanding. We begin to grasp more about Jesus, what He did for us, how much He loves us, how merciful He is, and how much He rejoices with us and suffers with us. Words from Scripture that previously had little or no meaning begin to come alive. They enlighten our minds and urge us to be holy. They convince us that we have God s strength to help us and to make us more fruitful for Jesus. Then here

7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver comes the best part. Whatever we learn and understand moves us to love Jesus more. When we grasp who He is and what He has done for us, our only response is to say, Jesus, I love you. We fall in love with Him all over again, and His love in turn calms our fears, heals our wounds, and energizes us with hope and confidence. Some who find this intimacy have even felt His arms around them and holding them close to His heart. Please consider spending an hour with Jesus, our Redeemer and Healer, and give him your commitment by choosing an hour slot any day once a week. When you are ready to commit for an hour, please submit the completed commitment form to the Rectory Office, drop it into the collection basket at the Sunday Mass, sign up at our parish web site, or use the kiosk outside the doors to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Thank you for loving God. Peace, Fr. Riz St. Peter Claver Parish will be hosting a festive Christmas concert on Sunday, January 13 th, 2019 at 7pm in the church. The concert will feature sacred and secular music. Please join our Music Director Jim Leslie and our Combined Choir, Father Riz, Father Adrian, and others as we celebrate the end of the Christmas Season. You may have noticed that the missals for the new liturgical year are here. In an effort to extend the life of the missals and missal covers, we ask that you replace the missals in an upright position when returning them to the pew or chair pockets after Mass, making them available for the next person attending Mass. We also ask that Missals not be removed from the church. Thank you! Many people enjoy using year s end as a special time to give to their favorite Catholic institutions and also positively impact their federal and state income taxes. Year end giving provides many advantages to you, the donor. All gifts made on or before December 31 st are tax deductible for the tax year in which your gift was made. By knowing the warning signs of different types of abuse and taking action to shut down abuse and offer protection and support, we can help the most vulnerable among us, whoever they may be.
