Some mornings we awake from a dream that feels significant. It s as if during the night, an answer was supplied to a question we were hardly aware of having asked. Was it about a relationship that needs healing; a wound that s never been consciously acknowledged; or a desire that we ve been afraid to own? Such dreams linger through the day, their symbols compelling, the feelings they arouse stirring us to ponder our response. We may also have daydreams with a similar power to rouse us. While we seem to have a little more control over where our imagination takes us in our waking hours, often it can seem more like a summons from a deeper place, a revelation of unspoken and unmet hopes. Does that island paradise or the sailboat gliding along indicate that we re tired in our labors and long for escape? Does the conquering hero fantasy we entertain indicate a leadership drive in us that we ve ignored for too long? Pay attention to your dreams. They re trying to tell you something. You would do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place. The mountaintop vision is a popular theme in stories. When we arrive at the summit, don t we see the big picture more clearly than from any other vantage point? All of a sudden our truncated vision of life in the trenches makes more sense. The view from the mountain is always grander and more complete than from the base. Moses encountered God on Mt. Sinai and received the Ten Commandments there. Prophets like Elijah and Elisha sought divine revelation at Mt. Carmel. Mt. Zion became the site of Jerusalem, the shining city on a hill where God s temple would stand. Jesus took three disciples up Mt. Tabor, and they glimpsed the divine identity of their teacher on that height. As this letter of Peter emphasizes, this vision was no dream or story, but a revelation witnessed by Peter, James, and John. The view from the mountain is vast and powerful. The tricky part is to take the vision home with you - and not to forget it. And Jesus was transfigured before them: His face shown like the sun. The definition of time is the measure of change. If nothing changed, we d have no sense of time passing at all. Change doesn t move at a constant pace: sometimes it s glacially slow, at other times it races into view like a freight train. The transfiguration of Jesus in the eyes of His disciples was an ongoing process of communication and revelation. Each teaching demonstrated His authority. Every miracle was a clue. And then, like a landslide, one afternoon on Mt. Tabor changed the disciples perception of Jesus completely. Not all change is beneficial, and not all that s revealed is beautiful, unhappily. This week we recall an hour in Hiroshima, a moment in Nagasaki, when history was tragically transformed in a flash of light. The human potential for unfathomable devastation was shown to the world, but this transfiguration of the moral landscape did not glorify God. What occupies the human heart will be revealed, hour by hour. We must take care that what we harbor inside testifies to the goodness of the God we serve.

3 Page Three August 6, 2017 My dear Parishioners, I m glad to be back from my two-week vacation, resting and enjoying family time with my sister s family in Santa Clara. Just like home, I was pampered with delicious food and plenty of fruits. I also did some house chores like dusting furniture, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms, and washing dishes. I really had a good time. Now, I m back to get my feet wet again and face the daily challenges of priestly ministry. By the grace of God and with the help of so many people, I will be able to meet those challenges, thank you Lord and thank you to so many of you. While I was on vacation, I was able to read the recent Pastoral Letter of our Archbishop Gomez. It is quite lengthy, but very important for our consideration given the present situation in our country and in the world. So, I would like to present several excerpts from his Pastoral Letter: FOR GREATER THINGS YOU WERE BORN: A PASTORAL LETTER TO THE FAMILY OF GOD IN LOS ANGELES ON GOD'S BEAUTIFUL PLAN OF LOVE FOR OUR LIVES AND OUR WORLD. Let us reflect on this first item that Archbishop Gomez pointed out in response to the current political and social condition of our country. Who are we and what are we here for?: Our challenge as Christians in a de-christianized society 4. I am finishing this letter to you at Christmas time. It is the end of a long and divisive year, in which our national elections exposed some of the darker inclinations in our culture and confirmed a deepening secularism and anti-humanistic spirit in American life. It is undeniable now that our society is being progressively de-christianized. Our elites in politics and law, education and the media are seeking through many means to drive God out of our daily lives and to silence His voice in the human heart. But as the reality of God is fading away, the reality of the human person is disappearing, too. We are becoming strangers to our own selves. We no longer know who we are or what is inside us. We face many troubles and injustices in our society: the sad persistence of racist thinking and practices; the bitter divisions along lines of money and education, class and family background; our cruel indifference to the sufferings of immigrants within our borders; the coercive agendas to redefine marriage and sexuality and normalize abortion and euthanasia; the brutal realities of human trafficking; the epidemics of pornography and addictions; the inequities in our criminal justice system, starting with our continued practice of executions; and the violence and deviancy in our popular entertainment. All of these troubles are indicators of a deeper problem our society has lost sense of the truth about the precious nature and dignity of the human person. 5. As I have been praying and reflecting on these things, it seems to me that America s divisions and dysfunctions are all pointing us back to basic questions: Who are we? What does it mean to be alive, to be a member of the human race? Where do we come from and what are we here for? What is it that we should be living for? What is the good life and why should I even want to be a good person? Do our lives make a difference? Is there meaning in the world, or is everything just random? With the loss of God, we no longer know how to find answers to these questions. And this is having damaging consequences for individuals, especially the young, and for our society. So many of our neighbors seem to be not really living but only existing. Many are just getting by and seem uncertain about the meaning of their lives and afraid, not hopeful, for the future. So many do not seem to know the love of God, do not hear His voice, do not seem to feel His tenderness and care in their lives. At the same time, it is evident that government and cultural leaders no longer know what makes for true human flourishing. As a result, we have lost the basis for setting priorities, for knowing what really matters. We have fewer foundations for passing on a sense of common purpose or shared values and responsibilities. In place of a coherent national spirit and ethos, we see in our society new expressions of radical individualism and new forms of domination by the strong against the weak. We see the promotion of lifestyles and ways of life rooted in a fruitless humanism, a false and incomplete vision of human life and the human person.

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver The heavens proclaim his justice; all peoples see his glory. ~ Psalm 97:6 The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) - Next weekend, August 12 th and 14 th, Tim and Jane Paulson will speak at all of the Masses about the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA), as part of the Missionary Cooperative Plan. GAIA currently works in Malawi, a small but densely populated country located in Sub-Saharan Africa at the epicenter of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic where over 790,000 children have been orphaned by AIDS. In total, over one million of the 16 million people in Malawi are orphaned children. Malawi was rated the poorest country in the world by the World Bank in Approximately 80% of the population lives in remote rural areas far from doctors, nurses, or any medical care. GAIA connects these communities to needed care through our Mobile Health Clinics, building healthcare capacity, educating the next generation of nurses through our Nursing Scholarship Program, and implementing our GAIA Village Programs to create healthier communities, protecting the most vulnerable, particularly orphans and women. You will find envelopes in the pews. Saint Peter Claver has exciting news!! A Young Adult Ministry is now active at Saint Peter Claver! All young adults are welcome. Looking for somewhere to talk about your faith, study scripture, pray, serve those in need and build good faith based friendships? Please come and join the conversation. Our next meeting is Tuesday, August 8 th at 7pm in the Parish Center. Check the Faith Formation page in future bulletins for any announcements. 7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver We are told these days in education, entertainment, advertising and social policy that our lives are ours for the making. We are told that who we are is our own personal project, something we are free to self-create, defining ourselves according to our own concepts of existence and what we think we want out of life. But I think it is fair to question the vision of life that is being presented to us by our society s elites and our increasingly globalized consumer economy. Are we really better off living without God, as if He does not exist and as if we can replace Him with our science and technology, our own inventions and devices? Is satisfying our needs and wants, material pleasure and bodily comfort is feeling good, having the right products and a steady stream of stimulating entertainments is this what makes for a happy and meaningful life? Or is there something more? I want to encourage you to get the whole copy of this Pastoral Letter from the Archdiocesan Website for free, and please read the whole letter. He wants us to receive his message of hope for all of us and how we can be heralds of good news of hope for others. I will present more excerpts from his letter for our next issue.
