3 Page Three January 15, 2017 Dearest Parishioners, As we come to worship today, we are within Ordinary Time before Ash Wednesday which will be on March 1 st. I wonder if we do understand what Ordinary Time means as a liturgical season. Ordinary Time is the period in the Liturgical Calendar outside of other major seasons and runs 33 or 34 weeks. In Latin, Ordinary Time is called Tempus Per Annum ( time throughout the year ). The season falls between Christmas and Lent, and also between Easter and Advent, exclusive. The use of the term Ordinary Time was used before the Second Vatican Council (c ), but it was not until after the council that the term was officially used to designate the period between Epiphany and Lent, and the period between Pentecost and Advent. Rather than being called the Season of Ordinary Time, the times were called Season After Epiphany and Season After Pentecost. After the new Catholic calendar took effect in 1969, these older designations were no longer used. However, some groups (including some Anglicans) still use the older designations. Interestingly, the Church in the Patristic period (c ) never seemed to effectively and concisely classify or label Ordinary Time, even though the time certainly existed. However, other sources suggest the etymology of Ordinary Time is related to our word ordinary (which itself has a connotation of time and order, derived from the Latin word ordo). Ordinary Time occurs outside of other time periods in the Church calendar, periods in which specific aspects of the mystery of Christ are celebrated. According to The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, the days of Ordinary Time, especially the Sundays, are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. Ordinary Time, depending on the year, runs either 33 or 34 weeks. When it runs 33 weeks, one of the numbered weeks must be omitted. The number that gets omitted is the one that would normally be scheduled to be observed after the Sunday of Pentecost. For example, in 2010, there were nine weeks of winter Ordinary Time, so logically, the 10th Week of Ordinary Time should be scheduled after Pentecost. However, because there were only 33 weeks of Ordinary Time in 2010, the 10th week was skipped, and actual numbered week observed was the 11th week of Ordinary Time. Basically, Ordinary Time encompasses that part of the Christian year that does not fall within the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, or Easter. The Catholic Church celebrates two periods of the year as Ordinary Time. The first period begins after the Feast Baptism of the Lord (the Sunday after the Epiphany) has ended. Some interpret this to mean that Ordinary Time begins on Sunday night, while others, including The General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, specifically mention the first period of Ordinary Time beginning on the Monday after the Baptism of the Lord. Either way, the point is the same. The next Sunday is still reckoned The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, because it is the Sunday of the second week in Ordinary Time. This first period of Ordinary Time runs until the Tuesday evening before Ash Wednesday. The second period of Ordinary Time runs from the Monday after Pentecost until Evening Prayer is said the night before Advent begins. This includes Christ the King, the final Sunday of Ordinary Time. In some denominations, the Sundays of the second period of Ordinary Time are numbered Sundays After Pentecost. Many important liturgical celebrations fall during Ordinary Time including Trinity, Corpus Christi, All Saints, the Assumption of Mary and Christ the King. In addition, the Church continues to celebrate the feast of the saints and other events such as The Octave of Christian Unity. The major feasts, when occurring on a Sunday, replace the regular Ordinary Time Sunday lessons and liturgy. In the American Catholic Church, Corpus Christi is usually transferred to a Sunday, so often there are fewer than the 33 or 34 Sundays labeled Sundays of Ordinary Time, although these Sundays still fall within Ordinary Time. We also may remember and celebrate the parts of Jesus life that were ordinary, much like our own lives. The green color is appropriate because it is the most ordinary color in our natural environment.

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. ~ Isaiah 49:6b Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. LIVE THE LITURGY It is important to know who we are and from where we come. Having a clear sense of iden ty allows us to make choices that further express and develop our ul mate purpose and goals. We are reminded today of Jesus' unique iden ty as God's Son and that by our bap sm we are given the gi of sharing in that same in mate rela onship with God. 7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver However, green challenges us to grow during Ordinary Time. Ordinary Time does not need to be ordinary, and is not a break from the liturgical year. The opposite is actually true: Ordinary Time celebrates the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. Perhaps, Ordinary Time is the opportune time for us to make our ordinary extraordinary by being faithful in keeping holy our time, our actions, our daily life by walking with Jesus as He teaches us about the Kingdom and how God wants to deepen His relationship with us. In other words, we usually encounter many of our brothers and sisters coming to church jam-packed on Christmas and Easter but where are they during Ordinary Time? Ordinary Time is the testing period of faithfulness, constancy and steadfastness learning, growing, exploring the Christian story and to remember our mission (with Christ). Just a reminder! The St. Vincent de Paul Bundle Sunday is next Sunday, January 22nd, in the parish parking lot from 8am-1:30pm. We Need Your Support! San Buenaventura and mail to Theresa Sullivan, 279 Manzanita Street, Ventura, CA For information call Rosa Palazuelos, (805) or (805) Can you imagine what kind of response I would get if I asked my three children, "Who would like to volunteer to clean up the kitchen after dinner today?" Six eyeballs staring at me like I had two heads! If I couch my request in terms of volunteerism, I have suggested that they don't have any real ownership in this matter. Perhaps they do sometimes think that their mother and I are simply hired hands to take care of them, but rest assured, I have not received a paycheck for services rendered lately. When you and I give a donation of blood, we volunteer our time and blood to the Red Cross. The Red Cross does not employ most of us, nor do we own a part of the Red Cross. We can only volunteer ourselves for the cause. As parishioners we are part of a parish family. We belong to our parish community. We do not visit on a Sunday morning, since we cannot visit a place that is home. The call of the body of Christ occurs in every parish and our response should be that of the psalmist, "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will." Real stewardship never counts the cost and never asks for volunteers. We step forward because we belong to something greater than ourselves and the head of that community is Jesus. After dinner at my house, someone needs to clean up the kitchen. In your parish community, someone needs to respond to the call of Jesus. In both cases, no volunteers are needed. We will rely on family instead. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

They might say "I'm bored" and need your guidance finding a better school-life balance or engaging in more challenging academic work. Ask them to give examples and to help you understand what is going on. If the child is still being vague, remind them that they can tell you anything and that you'll listen with an open mind. As parents and caregivers, you have the opportunity to help kids deal well with negative feelings and challenges. And, if they are being mistreated in some way, keeping an open line of communication with kids will enable you to be their advocate.
