3 Page Three March 10, 2019 Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. (Luke 4:1-2) TEMPTATION is from the Latin tentare, which means to try or to test. To a great extent, temptations are to the spiritual life what various tests on machines and materials are to mechanical and building operations. The machines and materials are put through stresses designed to show whether they will prove adequate to the demand that will be made on them. By a transfer of meaning, we can say that they are tempted. In the service of God, souls are tested or tried in order that the quality of their love for God and their devotion to Him may become known, and that they may at the same time be given opportunities of winning for themselves large treasures of grace and merit. Temptations, therefore, are meant to reveal whether the love that a soul claims to have for God is genuine and true and not mere hollow sham and vain pretense. They are the acid test of the spiritual life, revealing the true character of the soul. The soul that truly loves God will not allow itself to be overcome by them but will remain firm and immoveable in the keeping of His Holy Law; whereas that which is only a pretender will offer but little resistance, or perhaps none at all. RECOGNIZE THE ELEMENTS OF TEMPTATION ELEMENT ONE: THE TEMPTATION PRESENTS ITSELF. This may happen in a great variety of ways through the avenues of the five senses either altogether spontaneously and without our having in any way willingly caused them or by reason of past events whose memory is revived on occasion. Thus, it will often happen that you will see, hear or recall things that place before your mind images of or desires for what you know to be forbidden or simple. It may happen at the most unexpected moments, in the most sacred places and even in the most sacred actions. If these first beginnings of temptation come to you without any fault or willfulness on your part, they are in no way sinful. ELEMENT TWO: THE TEMPTATION CAUSES PLEASURE. Delectation is the sensation of pleasure that is caused directly by the presentation. You are informed that someone has done you serious injury. The moment you hear of it, thoughts and desires of resentment and revenge spring up unbidden in your mind. You cannot hinder this, do what you will. At the same time, you begin to taste the proverbial sweetness of revenge, even though you may be fully resolved to practice perfect forgiveness and love of enemies as commanded by Our Lord. This remembrance of injury will remain in your mind and the itch for revenge will linger with you for a long time to come. Are you guilty of sin merely because you feel it? NO! There is no sin, even though the delectation may be so intense. What looks like true consent is only apparent consent. The mere feeling or perception of delectations is in itself never sinful, so long as there was not unnecessary or willful exposure, without a good cause, to the occasions that produced them. ELEMENT THREE: YOU RESPOND. The decisive element of temptation is the action of the will in taking a stand either for or against the evil proposed; that is, in either giving its consent or refusing it. While so far there has been no sin in the temptation, no matter how vivid the suggestion or how enticing and strong the delectation may have been, it s now up to you to make a definite decision by either approving or rejecting the evil suggested to you. Deciding for Evil. The instant your will gives its approval or consent and not before you contract the guilt of sin. The essence of sin consists not in an outward bad action but in the deliberate adherence of the will to what is recognized as forbidden by the Divine Law. Our Lord teaches with great emphasis: The things which come out from a man, they defile him. For from within, out of the heart, proceed evil thoughts. All these evil things come from within and defile. (Mark 7:20-23) We must add here that there are certain actions (called acts of man vs. human acts) that are said to be indifferent as to their

6 Page Six St. Peter Claver The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. ~Romans 10:8 First Week of Lent Reliance Deuteronomy 26:4-10 Psalm 91:1-2, Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Romans 10:8-13 Luke 4:1-13 The Israelites psychological backdrop was their salvation from slavery in Egypt. The psalm response reflects their cry, Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. Paul tells the Romans to call on the name of the Lord to be saved. Jesus in the desert, hungry, alone, and facing temptation, relied on God for strength. Can I admit that I need God for my strength? What troubles might I need God s help with right now? This week I will work on forming a habit of acknowledging my dependence on God and pray the psalm response daily: Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble. 7 Page Seven St. Peter Claver moral value. They are neither good nor bad in themselves such as eating, drinking, recreation, etc. They only become either good or bad according to the intention which they are performed (for the glory of God or a sinful purpose). Be strong in choosing goodness and merit. Deciding against Evil. Instead of allowing the allurements of the presentation and delectation to conquer your will, you cooperate with God s grace and take a firm, resolute stand against them; you refuse to dwell on the evil thought, fancy or desire and, in particular, to carry out in action what is suggested to you by the temptation. With the help of God s grace, you succeed in keeping your will firmly set against it all. A temptation that is resisted, far from doing harm to your soul, becomes the means of great spiritual gain. It directly promotes growth in virtue, in the love of God, in grace, and in merit for Heaven. Your firm resistance means nothing less than perfect love of God and fidelity in His service. We have added some more opportunities to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Lenten season. Confessions will be heard on Mondays during Lent (3/11, 3/18, 3/25, 4/1, and 4/8) from 4-5pm in the church. Our Lenten parish Communal Penance Service will be on Wednesday, April 10 th at 7pm. There will be no confessions during Holy Week. Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast. Voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday: These are days of universal Fast and Abstinence from meat in the Church. There is a limit of one full meal on these days for all between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive. Days of Abstinence: (Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent): All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat. Easter Duty Obligation: After they have received their First Holy Communion, Catholics are bound by the obligation of receiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this is not limited to the Lenten/Easter Season. Please join us on Fridays during Lent in the Parish Hall for our annual Lenten Meals followed by Stations of the Cross in the church. This week we re having Creamy Veggie Tortilla Soup, Veggie Egg Rolls, and Maja Blanca (Sweet Corn Pudding) for Dessert! Return without fear, for this is the favorable time to come home. ~Pope Francis Lenten Message, February 14, 2018 St. Peter Claver held their annual Valentine s Bingo Marathon on Sunday, February 10th, A full house of bingo players participated in the fun and prizes. A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the Bingo volunteers - callers, floor workers, kitchen staff, and pull tab sellers - who worked so diligently and professionally to make this event a success - they are truly amazing! As a result of their efforts, a donation of over $55, was made to the St. Peter Claver Building and Maintenance Fund! It will take too long. I can't spare it. I don't know anybody. I am just too busy. How many excuses can you think of to put forth as reasons why you should say no to the call of Jesus Christ? Wait. You didn't know to whom those responses were directed? We say no to many things and many people, but we wouldn't say no to Jesus. Really? During this Lenten season, like all the other seasons, we will be asked to respond in many different ways. There will be fasting, almsgiving, and abstinence from certain foods. There will be invitations to various devotions and formational studies. We will be asked to reflect on our faith and then dive deeper. The argument will be made by some that many of these things are being asked of us by others and not Jesus. Of course, that will just be another excuse like those above. For every calling upon us comes with a temptation to take the easy way out or to minimize the value of the request. We will stay caught up in an endless cycle of excuses that lead us nowhere. That is unless we simply choose to stop the madness and say YES! This Lent, give up and give in. Let God take over as you surrender all you are and have to Him. Now is the time to turn to Jesus. No more excuses. ~Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

9 Page Nine St. Peter Claver If then my people, upon whom my name has been pronounced, humble themselves and pray, and seek my face and turn from their evil ways, I will hear them from heaven and pardon their sins and heal their land. From the Diary of St. Faustina: When once I asked the Lord Jesus how He could tolerate so many sins and crimes and not punish them, the Lord answered me, "I have eternity for punishing [these], and so I am prolonging the time of mercy for the sake of [sinners]. But woe to them if they do not recognize this time of My visitation. My daughter, secretary of My mercy, your duty is not only to write about and proclaim My mercy, but also to beg for this grace for them, so that they too may glorify My mercy" (Diary of St. Faustina, 1160). Trained adults can take steps to prevent suspicion - The Protecting God s Children program is in place to raise awareness about behaviors of adults that may indicate a threat to the safety of children and young people. Through this program, trained adults learn how to prevent abuse from happening, in part by taking steps to eliminate suspicious behaviors, such as being alone with a young person. Creating a culture of openness and transparency goes a long way towards alleviating concerns of inappropriate behavior by adults, and helps children feel safe in their environment. For a full copy of the VIRTUS article Applying Principles of the Protecting God s Children Program, visit protecting/pages/virtus-current-online- Articles.aspx.
