In Luke s Gospel 5:4 we read: Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch. Peter, a professional fisherman, told Jesus that he and his fellow fishermen caught nothing and that they have been at it for a while. Yet Peter followed the Lord s instructions. Thank God he listened to Jesus because the catch was unbelievable. Without the Lord s instructions he and the others caught nothing but when Peter did what he was told a miracle took place. I m sure we have all had those moments when we found ourselves not having any success and we might feel like hanging it up. However, we need to listen to the voice of Jesus. We need to trust that the Lord will guide us and give us the strength to keep on trying. We need to go out into the deep and realize that with Jesus by our side hope is not lost. You and I cannot do things on our own. We think that we can be dependent on our own will. Good luck with that. After this big catch, Peter was called by Jesus to a new focus. Jesus moved from fish to people. Once we come to accept the Lord s invitation to go out into the deep we then are open to listening to his voice. Like Peter we then leave everything behind and do the will of God. Let go of your own thinking that your way is the way. You can keep going on that road but you will not be successful. Let go of everything and begin to trust in God. Jesus brings us true happiness. God has a specific plan for you. Have a great week! Your friend, Fr. WEEKLY REFLECTION Yesterday a news program showed a snowplow moving snow off the roadway so people could get to their destinations safely. I thought about the many times in my life that our Heavenly Father moved things out of the way for me, my family and friends. We don t always see the snowplow ahead. It may be far in front and around the bend. Similarly, we are not always able to see how our Heavenly Father goes ahead and makes possible what we cannot do alone. Family Promise of Tualatin Valley wants to return that hope to families. We hear about homeless families every day A working Tigard family, whose mom has health problems, is living in a hotel in Hillsboro and can t get into a shelter because one of their children has special needs. A mom with three boys uses the food bank, but because they're living in a car, she can't cook and they often go hungry. The 203 identified homeless children in our school districts are struggling. Family Promise will help families meet these needs and others that present themselves each day when navigating homelessness. St. Anthony will be one of 11 host churches that will provide shelter for families for one week about four times a year. The families will spend the day at the Family Promise Day Center and return in the evenings to the host church. Most importantly, families will St. Anthony as a host parish will need your help to welcome our guests: Dinner meals for 7 days, fellowship with the families and homework help, play time the children Sandwich making items for 7 days, breakfast items for 7 days Two people to spend the night If you are interested in finding out how you can help contact Mayra Mendoza at mmendoza@satigard.org 4

5 Catholic Social Teaching Prayer to St. Josephine Bakhita St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated from your physical enslavement, you found true redemption in your encounter with Christ and his Church. O St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of slavery; Intercede with God on their behalf so that they will be released from their chains of captivity. Those whom man enslaves, let God set free. Provide comfort to survivors of slavery and let them look to you as an example of hope and faith. Help all survivors find healing from their wounds. We ask for your prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us. 6 DISCIPLES BELIEVE DISCIPLES BELIEVE has been well received, so we have added a morning session. You can now come to Disciples Believe on either Monday night from 7 8:30 in Francis Hall; or Thursday morning from 9:30 11 in the parish office. We are also planning an early morning session on Friday s (6:00 7:15 AM) beginning March 1, just in time for Lent! DISCIPLES BELIEVE is a ten session series on the basic teachings of the Catholic faith. It s great for folks learning about the Church for the first time, but also for long time Catholics who want to refresh or renew their faith. A typical session includes a video teaching, prayer, discussion and suggestions for you to follow up on your own, if you want. You can come to any or all of the ten sessions and you can start at any time. We will let you know what the topics are a few weeks in advance in the bulletin. Join us and, if you can, bring your Bible! SNOW? If the schools are cancelled due to snow, we won t have Disciples Believe. If it doesn t seem safe to you to be driving stay home!!! COMING SOON!!! Beginning Friday, March 1, we are going to begin an early morning Disciples Believe. The sessions will run from 6:00 7:15 AM in the parish office. This might be just the thing you could do for this coming Lent! Breakfast at St. Anthony Catholic Daughters February 17th Come join us for the February Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast. We will be serving breakfast on Sunday February 17 from 7:30am - 10:30am in Francis Hall. Enjoy fresh cooked regular or blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and ham or sausage. All proceeds from this months breakfast will go to support the St. Anthony Youth Ministry programs.
