1 October 15, 2017 WELCOME ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Greetings I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. This Monday, 15 parishioners, Fr. Gary Zeer and myself will be travelling to Jordan and the Holy Land for 12 days and 10 nights. This will be part one, letting you know where I will be this first week of the journey. October 17 Arrive at Amman Jordan International Airport. The time in that part of the world is 10 hours ahead. We arrive at 11:55 PM, that is 1:55 PM Portland time. October 18, after breakfast we will head for Madaba Jordon. Madaba is known for its 6thcentury mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. We will ascend to Mount Nebo which is an elevated ridge in Jordan. This place is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. October 19, we will spend the day in Petra, the archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert. Dating to around 300 B.C., it was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. It is called the rose city because it was excavated totally in the red rock of the mountain. At the end of the day we will travel back to Amman Jordan. October 20, after breakfast we will travel 30 miles north to Jerash in Jordan. It is considered one of the largest and most well-preserved sites of Roman architecture in the world outside Italy. We will visit a large number of temples and the remains of several Byzantine churches. We will then transfer to Sheick Hussein Bridge, the crossing point between Jordan and Israel. It is here that we will meet a new guide and continue to Tiberias for dinner and overnight. October 21, after breakfast we will leave for Cana of Galilee. This is where the first miracle of Jesus occurred. It is here that I will bless all of our married couples. And pray for all married couples in our parish community. From here we will travel to Nazareth and start a walking tour from Mary s Fountain to the Basilica of the Annunciation for a visit to Mary s House, the Upper Basilica, the Museum and the church of the Holy family. In the afternoon, we will leave for Haifa and then ascend to Mount Carmel, passing by the Persian Gardens of the Bahai sect. Here we will visit the church of Stella Maris which is the birthplace of the Carmelite Order which contains a natural grotto of the prophet Elijah. After that it is back to Tiberias for a wonderful dinner and overnight stay. Stayed tune for more excitement... Have a great week Your friend, Fr. John 9905 SW MK S, T FAX $$$.".

3 Pope Francis has declared November 19 as the FIRST WORLD DAY OF THE POOR. On the Feast Day of St Anthony of Padua, patron saint of the poor, Pope Francis issued the first message for the World Day of the Poor; Let us love, not with words but with deeds You can hear the echoes from St James who wrote, Faith without works is dead James 2:30 Pope Francis wanted to offer the Church a World Day of the Poor, so that throughout the world Christian communities can become an ever greater sign of Christ s charity for the least and those most in need. This is to remind us of Jesus preferential love for the poor. From prayer to encounter, how can we properly commemorate the First World Day of the Poor? How can we live the Christian message FIRST WORLD DAY OF THE POOR? Join other parishioners and Matt Cato, Director of the Archdiocesan Office of Life Justice and Peace at 7 PM, Monday, October 30, Francis Hall. Did Jesus just tell us not to judge? Did He say we can t even badmouth someone who has hurt us or complain about rude comments? Did He forbid spreading negative judgements about others? Yes, most certainly, He did. We all have sinned. He cautions us sinners not to stone others. Should we consider this admonition a restriction or a relief? It s a great relief to be out of the judgement business. Don t you agree? As Pope Francis has said, Who am I to judge? 7 Senior Moment: Faith development starts by assuming a subject-to-object relationship or a relationship between the person and God. Without God, or without the person, there can be little discussion of faith. As such then, this approach includes reflection on this relationship in whatever form is helpful to the individual or group involved. It may involve discussion groups on knowing God; it may reflect meditations on the impact of God in one s life; it may involve strengthening of prayer. In any case, it is understood as a journey or process that moves from one place in development to another. Ministering to Older Adults: The Building Blocks by Donald R. 8 Long time parishioner, Bruce Hollister, is celebrating his 90th Birthday. Join his family on TODAY, October 15, 1 to 3 PM in O Reilly Hall to wish Bruce Happy Birthday 40 DAYS FOR LIFE continues through November 5 Join other faithful Christians in prayer and fasting for an end to abortion and/or to stand and peacefully pray during a vigil in the public rightof-way outside the Lovejoy Surgicenter in Portland. The Surgicenter is located at 933 NW 25th Ave, Portland. Here is one witness testimony I was witness to a women changing her mind and walking out of the clinic still pregnant. I am so glad that I stayed later than I had anticipated so that I could tell this women how much I admired her. This is what happened: Therese needed me to stay past 12 noon because we had a new guy coming out to pray with us. His name was Walter and he showed up right on time, rosary in hand. I spent my time talking with Lonnie who was holding her "I regret my abortion" sign by the driveway to the back parking lot. I always enjoy spending time with her because she is also someone I greatly admire. A women of incredible courage and so sweet! I spoke to a couple women as they were going inside but none of them stopped to take the information I had for them. Lonnie and I started praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, and we were interrupted at one point by a young women in a sweat suit storming out the back door of Lovejoy, her boyfriend and friend running behind her trying to catch up. She lit a cigarette and said something to Lonnie, but we couldn t hear her. Lonnie asked her, "Sorry, what did you say?" And she says, with exasperation, "I didn't do it! I didn't do it!"...i right away asked her if we could help her with a baby shower and wanted to talk to her, I was so excited! But, she was too upset to talk to us. I yelled after her that we would be there every morning if she wanted to come back and talk to us. We would help her get anything she needed for her baby. At this point, she was across the street from us, and I yelled out to her, "God will reward you for your choice today! YOU ARE MY HERO! I mean it!" As she speedily walked away, I felt those words resonate in my soul. You are my hero And she certainly was. May we all pray that whatever difficulties she had that led her to that abortion appointment that day, that God would remove them and bless her abundantly for giving her baby a chance at life...a birthday. a chance to know and love Him on this earth. May we always be grateful that our mothers gave birth to us and gave us the chance to experience how wonderful it is to be alive! 8
