1 October 22, 2017 WELCOME ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC COMMUNITY 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Greetings, I hope you are well and I pray that you are happy. One week of our trip is coming to an end and our second week is just getting started. Here is what we are doing this week. October 23 After breakfast we are going to drive the Jordan Valley to Jericho, the oldest city in the world for a visit to Tel El Sultan, which is the site of the biblical Jericho. It is here that we will also get a view of the Mount of Temptations. This is where Jesus was tempted by the devil. It is impossible to know the exact location. This morning I might even take a dip in the salty waters of the Dead Sea. In the afternoon we will continue to Qumran and visit the cave of the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was said that allegedly a Bedouin shepherd discovered the initial Dead Sea Scrolls which changed the study of the Old Testament. We will continue to travel to Bethlehem for our dinner and overnight stay. Byzantine churches and monasteries. In the afternoon we will visit the Church of John the Baptist and the Visitation Chapel. We will stay in our hotel in Bethlehem. It is also my hope to visit some friends in their home in Bethlehem during the evening hours. October 25 After breakfast it is off to the Mount of Olives. We will also visit the Garden of Gethsemane as well as Mary s tomb. In the afternoon we will explore Mount of Zion where we will visit several churches including the Last Supper room as well as the Wailing Wall. October 26 We will visit the Pool of Bethesda and then continue to walk the Via Dolorosa (the Way of the Cross) to the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher for a detailed visit to Mt. Calvary, the Holy Tomb and St. Helen Chapel. We will have a free afternoon to do some shopping and then a Farewell dinner. October 27 We leave from Tel Aviv and back to the United States. I will continue to pray for you at all of the beautiful Holy Places. Have a great week and see you soon. October 24 Today we will go to the Basilica of the Nativity: the Grotto of Nativity, the Manger. We will also visit the Shepherds Field with the natural grottos and the remains of the Your friend, Fr John 9905 SW MK S, T FAX $$$.".

On a sunny day, you may see the sun, or maybe not. Puffy white clouds may drift across the sky. The sun plays peeka-boo, we see it and then we don t. We never feel as if the sun has gone away just because at times we can t see it. We still feel its warmth and know, without doubt, it remains in place and continues to warm the earth and support life in all of its forms. What about on a dark, rainy day? We may see black clouds in the sky, or maybe just a slate gray veil hiding the sun from our view. We may not feel the sun s warmth through the cloud cover. Should we worry the sun has gone from us? No, we can count on the sun being in the heavens and continuing to support Earth s needs. When dark clouds trouble us, keep us from seeing God s work in our lives or feeling the warmth of His presence, should we wonder if He is still nearby? Do we doubt Him, or do we rely on our faith that God is always with us? Pray and praise God. He is with us rain or shine, in trouble or triumph. Our faith carries us beyond the clouds so we can feel His touch and hear His words. Don Lane "$"%& Each year at tax time, we conscientiously give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. Does my stewardship indicate that I am as faithful about giving to God what belongs to God? Communio Coffee Opening Sunday, Oct 22 Join us for fellowship and purchase a latte. 6 Servants, Leaders, and Song People of God, we need your help. Fall is the season when many of us commit to new endeavors. The summer weather is winding down, and it is a good time to reevaluate how we use our time. St. Anthony music ministry is looking for your help. The Mass is the source and summit of our lives, and truly the most exciting place to come together as a community. Please, consider helping us spread the good news. For the NON-MUSICIAN Can you help with..filing/printing music, building/printing programs/powerpoint, updating websites, reporting copyright usage? Time commitment about 1 hour a week, or seasonal. For the GOOD LISTENER Can you help with.setting up sound systems, running the mixing board or projector? This ministry requires someone with a love for music and attentive listening skills. Some knowledge of AV technology is helpful, but not required. Time commitment will require you to arrive early for weekend masses to help set up and run sound checks. For the MUSICIAN We are always looking for people to enrich our music at mass. Here are some specific needs we are looking for. 5PM Mass: Singers, we currently sing in 3-4 part harmony but are limited by numbers. We could use more support in all vocal ranges, particularly those who can read or learn quickly. We would love to add some St Anthony more instruments to the group as well. (Guitar, bass, drums, violin, flute, clarinet.) The time commitment is a Monday night rehearsal (7-8:30) and arriving 45 minutes before mass. 7AM Mass: A singer willing to help lead the music. Someone with confidence and the ability to read/fast learner is preferred. The time commitment is to arrive 30 minutes before mass, and some home preparation. 8:30 AM Mass: Singers, we currently sing in 4 part harmony but are limited by numbers. Our greatest need is for a 1 st Sopranos, but vocal ranges are needed, particularly those who can read or learn quickly. We would love to add some more instruments to the group as well. (Guitar, bass, drums, violin, flute, clarinet.) The time commitment is a Wednesday night rehearsal (7-8:30) and arriving 30 minutes before mass. 11AM Mass: Do you play Bass? We need your help. We are also looking for other supporting instruments. Singers, we currently sing in 3 part harmony and would love new members, particularly those who can read or learn quickly. The time commitment is a Monday night rehearsal (7-8:30) and arriving 60 minutes before mass. Vietnamese and Spanish Mass Choirs: If you are interested in these ministries, please contact Nichlas (info below) and he can put in touch with the right person. 7PM Mass: We are looking for vocalists and instrumentalists who can read and play well. 7 Senior Moment: Simply stated, community building is a process that allows people to engage with one another. The common introductory act of sharing one s name is community building. If you add to that some other piece of sharing such as where one was born, you have moved a little deeper into community because people now know something else about each other and are beginning to discover similarities as well as differences. Again with time and effort and intention, this process can move to the point where individuals are comfortable sharing from the depths of their souls. 10 Tips for Preparing Your Child for the Sacrament of Reconciliation Memorize the Act of Contrition Role play Feel free to role play what happens in Confession using the brochures. Give special attention to your children s day-to-day life. You are helping your child through a period of apprenticeship in Christian living. It is important that you pay more attention than usual to his or her daily experiences. This is not so you can be more critical, just the opposite. It is to give you opportunities for encouragement. Encourage your child to put into practice what is learned. Don t be overwhelmed by the sacrament. It does not take a theologian to teach your children about forgiveness, God s love and mercy, and the basics of the sacraments. If you take some time with heartfelt attention to share stories with your children and look through the materials with them, you have all you need. Remember to remind your child that whatever is told to a priest in confession is a secret. They may not even tell you, the parent, what was discussed. Don t forget to say I forgive you to one another after I m sorry is said. Works of Mercy Shelter the Homeless» Many circumstances could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face. Act» Provide one-time or reoccurring meals Our Severe Weather Shelter needs many kinds volunteers, meal providers as well as greeters and overnight hosts, just to name a few.» The Oregon Housing Alliance unites people who are dedicated to increasing resources to meet our housing needs. Learn and participate in its advocacy efforts. Donate» Winter Weather Clothing Our Severe Weather Shelter is currently in need of men and women s clothing, sizes M/L/XL Warm coats, socks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc Jesuit High School Teach In for Social Justice-Saturday, November 4th Please join us for an afternoon to learn, pray and advocate for social justice.
