2 Page 2 Father John s letter will return next week. P A S T O R S CORNER Fr. John Henderson Window into Divine Mercy Do the words of other people speak more intensely to us than the word of God? If we allow ourselves to be swept up by Jesus, do we continue to trust in Him even when we aren t met with applause, but instead told that we aren t in touch with the times or a fanatic? Bl. Sopocko, the spiritual advisor and confessor of St. Faustina, was extremely instrumental in establishing devotion to the Divine Mercy. He was chosen by Jesus to help St. Faustina fulfill Jesus requests which St. Fasutina, a very simple nun belonging to the lower tier of nuns in her convent, conveyed to him from Jesus. Fulfilling the requests was often met with difficulties and many unkind words and humiliations from others, especially from priests and sisters. Among Jesus requests was the establishment of a new Divine Mercy congregation. Father Sopocko stood at the altar of a new convent he was establishing with tears in his eyes speaking to a mere six small poor sisters kneeling around the altar chosen by God as servants of Divine Mercy. It was much later, after analysis of St. Faustina s diary, that it was recognized that there were several forms which this new congregation was to take. We, the laity, are one form which is based on mercy. We bring people to Jesus not by preaching to them, but by living lives which are full, active, and merciful. Others will then come to us asking about our great and merciful Lord who is worthy of all our trust. How many wildfires could we ignite through lives of mercy and trust in Jesus? In his diary Bl. Sopocko wrote, Today I am eighty years old. My hands are empty. All of Jesus requests were fulfilled and the Divine Mercy devotion spread like wildfire over the entire world, but not during his lifetime. Yet, until the end of his life, Bl. Sopocko, trusted in the fulfillment of the messages. He was a professor of theology and died with the reputation of being a very humble priest, full of peace, wise, and very stately. He wrote in his diary that we are rewarded for all of the virtues mentioned in the bible, but we are rewarded doubly for the virtue of mercy both in this world as well as in everlasting life. Jesus, I trust in You - Losia Radominski October is the month chosen by the Catholic church to emphasize the teaching that all life is worth living. There are many activities planned throughout the Archdiocese during this month. Go to for Archdiocesan events. Here at St Anthony we will be taking a simple and important action. We will collect infant feeding formula and diapers. These items will be given to NW Children Outreach in Tualatin. Our Tigard/Tualatin School District obtains supplies from them when a family is in need. Ask your family members and friends to help show their respect for life by helping with donations.

We served almost 80 people and thanks to the following, our total expenses were only $705! ELK COVE VINEYARDS (donated all the fabulous wine) DUCK DELIVERY / UNITED SALAD - THE SPADA FAMILY - my employers (donated all the produce) MARSEE BAKERY PORTLAND FRENCH PROVIDENCE HEALTH HOSPITALS (donated the time Chef Mark needed to prep at Meridian Park Hospital) Our total intake was $6705 including 10% of wine sales exceeding $7000, (WOW!) Our NET return to SVDP was $6000. That is a $1400 increase over last year s net return to SVDP and a $2000+increase in wine sales. Needless to say Elk Cove Vineyards has once again committed to supporting our Fall 2017 Dinner. Lastly, A TOAST TO YOU, each and every one of you, this crazy idea I had on New Year s Eve of 2009, would have fizzled and died without your past, present and future support of our efforts. Regular Sunday mass attendance 2. Foundational Catechesis through Sunday R.E. Classes or Catholic week day school. 3. At home parent/child sacrament book completion. 4. Parish support through parent meetings & family retreats. Parents are encouraged to enroll children as 1st graders. Preparation for sacraments begins in the 2nd/3rd grade by enrolling in foundational catechesis. For 4th graders and older who are in their 1st year of formation, preparation begins in year two. 7 Page 7 Y O U T H MINISTRY Saint Anthony s Life Teen is a youth ministry for any high schooler. Meetings will be Sunday nights, 5:00-6:45 PM, in Francis Hall. Starting date to be determined. Visitors are always welcome. P A R I S H SCHOOL Third grade s annual service project for Lincoln Park Elementary students yielded donations of backpacks stuffed with school supplies. 100% of the students at Lincoln Park are on free or reduced lunches. Among the students, 35 different languages are spoken and English is the 2nd language for 50% of the students. A true blessing and a lifelong lesson for our third graders! Middle school ministry coming soon to St. Anthony! Meetings will be Wednesday nights, 6:00-7:15 PM, starting this fall! Have you registered for Youth Ministry? Registration is needed for those who are regularly attending Life Nights and other youth events. For those going in to their first or second year of Confirmation, the needed registration form is attached. Middle school Edge registration is a must, but it s quick and easy here: CALLING ALL YOUNG ADULTS! Join us for a casual study of the coming week s readings and time spent in Catholic friendship. Starting October 10, we ll meet Mondays at 6:30 in the back room of Symposium Coffee House Tuesday was our annual Jogathon. Funds generated cover class field trips as well as offset the cost of the Chrysalis trips for 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Again this year, our wonderful principal jogged side by side with students, offering encouragement along the way. In celebration of Johnny Appleseed s birthday, kindergarteners came to school dressed like this famous early American nurseryman and made applesauce. Students also learned that he was a faithfilled man who loved God and how he shared that faith throughout his life. So let s take a few minutes this week to think about how we can answer Pope Francis call for constructive dialogue about our place in God s creation and the environmental impact on poor people and communities. As you know, Pope Francis was so inspired by St. Francis of Assisi that he is the first Roman pontiff to take the saint s name. He has challenged us to make care for creation and care for the poor a cornerstone of our Catholic witness. Climate change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political and for the distribution of goods. It represents one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day. ~Pope Francis, Laudato Si', On Care for our Common Home This year marks the 37th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi being named the Patron Saint of those who promote ecology by St. John Paul II. Take the St. Francis Pledge Taking the St. Francis Pledge commits you to respond to the moral call for action on climate change. By pledging, you commit to praying, acting, and advocating for ways to solve climate change. How you fulfill those commitments is up to you. 11 C O M MU NITY LIFE SAINT ANTHONY S ROSARY MAKERS Interested in learning to make Rosaries for the Missions worldwide? Come and join us in the Upper Room at the Parish Office Friday mornings from 10 AM to noon! Another group will be starting one evening a week for those unable to attend the morning session. We began meeting in 2015 and have sent nearly 3,000 Rosaries to Missions in the USA, Africa, India and South America. The letters we receive in return from the Missionaries are heartfelt with thanks and requests for many, many more. Supplies are inexpensive and the technique is simple to learn. A number of Rosary Makers work at home and bring their completed Rosaries. We can also make custom Rosaries to order using fire-polished glass beads for special occasions, price based on cost of supplies. There is a display of our Rosaries in the Gathering Space. We welcome any donations to help us with the cost of shipping, which is $95. Envelopes are provided which can be placed in the collection Baskets at Mass. Many thanks! FROM OUR CEMETERY DIRECTOR The St Anthony Cemetery is looking for the donation of a working golf cart to help transport people with physical challenges to visit their loved one s gravesite. It is very distressing to them when they cannot walk across the grass without physical assistance in order to deliver flowers to a gravesite. A big thank you to all the Knights of Columbus and other volunteers that helped this summer during the cleanup work party. Extra credit goes to Dean Ferrell for all of his dedication as a volunteer. Practica de Coros. Coro de Jóvenes/ Niños La práctica de los coros de niños y jóvenes es el 1ro, 2do y 4to martes del mes a las 7:15pm en la iglesia. Niños deben ser acompañados por sus padres. Coro de Jóvenes Adultos La práctica del coro de jóvenes adultos es el 3er martes de cada mes. Bienvenido a la Parroquia de San Antonio Gracias por acompañarnos esta tarde.
