We desire to move from BELIEVER to DISCIPLE. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, By virtue of their prophetic mission, lay people are called to be witnesses to Christ in all circumstances and at the very heart of the community of mankind (CCC #942) Each and every one of us by our baptism is given this mission. The work of discipleship is not only for Priests, Deacons and Religious. It is the call we have to be the disciples needed so the church can grow, souls can be saved and we can obtain eternal life with God. 1. GROWING IN FAITH A. Strong and Vibrant liturgical celebrations [the Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives. We gather every Sunday morning as the Body of Christ to sing praises to God, hear God's Word, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, and connect with one another.] B. Disciples Believe [10 week process for baptized Catholics and those who are baptized in another tradition but wish to become Catholics] C. Disciples Grow [helping catholic live the faith] D. ACTS Retreat [An ACTS Retreat is a parish-based event, which offers parishioners an opportunity to experience the love of Jesus Christ. This in turn fosters a desire for intentional discipleship. ACTS Retreats are given by parishioners for parishioners, and in this way, serve to build Christian community at a parish. The ACTS Retreat begins Thursday evening and ends with Sunday Mass in the parish. Showing love for God and love for each other? Practicing kindness and charity towards others? Yes, we can find examples of these in the Bible. We also find one word which stands out like a stick-on red nose, FORGIVENESS. Peter asks, How many times do I have to forgive someone, up to seven times? Jesus said to Perter, I tell you not seven times, but seventy times seven times. (Matthew 18:21) One of Jesus last requests was, "Forgive them Father." (Luke 23:34) Likewise, Stephen's last words were similar: Lord, do not hold this sin against them. (Acts 7:60) This Christmas, the best gift we can give and the best gift we can receive is the gift of forgiveness. We have the ability to make this Christmas the best ever. Just when the womb gets too old for babies, Sarah mother of Isaac and Elizabeth mother of John the Baptist get pregnant. Just when the failure is too great for grace, David is pardoned. The lesson -- Don t give up. Is the road long? Don t stop. Is the night black? Don t quit. God is watching. For all you know, right at this moment, the check may be in the mail. 6 WOMEN S RETREAT Women s Retreat: February 22 24, The women of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, invite you to join us for a weekend retreat at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House, in Beaverton. The retreat will be facilitated by Fr. Charles Gordon, CSC of Portland University. The theme is: How Literature Informs Our Faith. Fr. Gordon returns to us by unanimous request of last year s participants. Disciples Believe has been well received, we are starting a morning session. Beginning the week of January 6, you can come to Disciples Believe on either Monday night from 7 8:30 in Francis Hall; or Thursday morning from 9:30 11 in the parish office. Disciples Believe is a ten session series on the so of the Catholic Church. It s great for folks learning about the Church for the first time, but also for long time Catholics who want to refresh or renew their faith. A typical session includes a video teaching, prayer, discussion and suggestions for you to follow up on your own, if you want. You can come to any or all of the ten sessions and you can start at any time. We will let you know what the topics are a few weeks in advance in the bulletin. We have a rich community of people where we can all learn so much. Our God of love and generosity gives to each and everyone of us FIRST and all of us are asked to participate in this generosity. As you consider where your end-of-year giving might go this year, remember St. Anthony Catholic Community. Remember that this is the community who will be here to baptize, marry, and bury you. Remember that this community will be here to guide you on your faith journey and to pray with you. Remember that we will be here to walk with you if your marriage crumbles, or you find yourself lost in the woods as a parent. COMMUNITY OUTREACH Please join us January 12th for a two-hour session (10-noon) on Catholic Social Teaching and Community Organizing, conducted by Mary Nemmers, Lead Organizer, Metropolitan Alliance for Common Good (MACG). The session will give an overview of the primary goals and tools of MACG s model of relational community organizing, and connect it with the Catholic values and teachings that call us to work for justice in the community.
