You ll find, tucked away in the Bible, a wonderful description of Tabitha, a Godly woman Peter raised from the dead. The Bible says she was always doing good works and helping the poor, Acts 9:36. What a beautiful, one-line description of a woman whose actions so reflected Christ s love that we still read about her two thousand years later. She reminds me of another who devoted her life doing good works and helping the poor, Mother Teresa, Saint Teresa of Calcutta. Don Lane 2 "$">? 4 The Children s Faith Formation Ministry at St. Anthony is designed to aid parents as the primary religious educators of their children and their youth and to facilitate the student s discovery, recognition, and experience of God s activity in their lives. 6 Senior Moment: The ministry needs of seniors hurting from the loss of their home after a transition from independently living in the house that has been their home for the past 50 years into community living may never receive national media coverage. However, the loss to them is just as real and devastating as that of an earthquake victim who house was reduced to rubble. The suffering of seniors who struggle with the loss of meaningful living in a youth-focused culture may never make the headlines, but their heartache is just as real as that of a hurricane survivor who has likewise lost hope to carry on. The suffering of seniors who have lost a spouse to age or disease, whether weeks, months or years ago may never captivate the nation s undivided attention. The lingering wounds, however, are just as real to them as for those who still struggle years later with the loss of loved ones in the aftermath of 9/11. Seniors are People, T00! 8 Sponsored by St Vincent de Paul The Community Café has served a free, freshly prepared hot meal every Sunday for the past 9 years. Including holidays! Volunteers are need to supplement the many crews that rotate on a weekly basis. There are 9 crews that rotate every 9 weeks. Volunteers must be between 13 years and 80+ years old. Each crew has an event captain and chefs, along with 8 to 10 volunteers that serve the meal in a sit down style restaurant meal. Volunteers greet each guest and bring them their meal, beverage and dessert. The Community Café is located in the Old School Cafeteria. Meals are served Sunday night from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. The time commitment for a volunteer is from 5 to 7 PM. Chef s and event captain arrive earlier. The Community café calendar is found on the parish website, satigard.org/ministry/stvincent-de-paul/ and lists the crew captains and the dates each crew is scheduled. Thank you to all the 100+ volunteers who currently help provide a free hot meal to the hungry in our community EVERY Sunday. Church hopes to dispel widespread fear of newcomers and to raise awareness of why so many people are compelled to leave their homes at this time in history. Share the Journey runs until September Anyone can join the campaign. Share the Journey: On September 27, 2017, Pope Francis launched the Share the Journey campaign from Saint Peter's Square. On that day he invited everyone around the world to "Share the Journey" with refugees and migrants. *Share the Journey promotes "the culture of encounter": Increase the spaces and opportunities for migrants and communities to come together and learn about each other. *Passionate about migration and interested in what's happening in our world? Share the Journey is where you can make a difference at all levels. *Uncertain? Through this campaign, our Ruth turned her dreams into reality thanks to DACA. What now? Ruth* takes pleasure in doing simple things other parents may take for granted. One of the most notable is she can drive her kids to soccer practices, school and community service events without worrying about being stopped by law enforcement. But the joy and freedom Ruth experiences from taking her children to their activities may be in jeopardy. Ruth came to the United States at age nine. Since she arrived, she always lived in fear of being separated from her family due to her legal status in this country. She was young when she made the U.S. her home and didn t understand all the legal challenges she would later face. Ruth says she was always forced to live in (Continued on page 9) 8

9 (Continued from page 8) the shadows, not being able to fully socialize with other kids. She knew from a young age she could not do or enjoy the same activities they did, including simple things like going on road trips with her family. As an adult, Ruth s situation got even worse. She was not able to continue with her dream of going to college and becoming a prominent lawyer or working for law enforcement. In fact, she could not even obtain a simple job or drive, much less take trips with her kids or go to an emergency room without being asked for identification. When former President Obama introduced DACA, Ruth says her life completely changed. DACA is the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Over 780,000 youth have received protection from the DACA program since its inception by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in DACA provides no legal status or government benefits, but does provide recipients with temporary employment authorization to work in the United States and receive a reprieve from deportation. Because of DACA, Ruth was finally able to come out of the shadows and obtain her dream job. She works at a school and is proud to serve her community. With DACA, she could obtain a driver s license, buy a house, and take her oldest son on a road trip to visit colleges. Most recently, she could help him achieve his dream of being accepted to a fouryear university. Ruth has gone back to school to further her education, and soon she will obtain a bachelor s degree in accounting. Ruth says she would not have been able to reach most of the achievements she has now if it wasn t for DACA. Her dreams continue. She hopes to finish her bachelor s degree and help her daughter go to college by supporting her financially and emotionally. The Catholic Response On September 5, the Administration announced the DACA program will be terminated in the next six months. The future is uncertain for hundreds of thousands of people like Ruth who came to the United States as a child. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) denounces the decision to end DACA and strongly encourages Congress to find a legislative solution. The cancellation of the DACA program is reprehensible. It causes unnecessary fear for DACA youth and their families. These youth entered the U.S. as minors and often know America as their only home This decision is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as Americans. As people of faith, we say to DACA youth regardless of your immigration status, you are children of God and welcome in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church supports you and will advocate for you. *Name changed to protect privacy. 9

10 Tips for Preparing Your Child for the Sacrament of Reconciliation Memorize the Act of Contrition Role play Feel free to role play what happens in Confession using the brochures. Give special attention to your children s day-to-day life. You are helping your child through a period of apprenticeship in Christian living. It is important that you pay more attention than usual to his or her daily experiences. This is not so you can be more critical, just the opposite. It is to give you opportunities for encouragement. Encourage your child to put into practice what is learned. Don t be overwhelmed by the sacrament. It does not take a theologian to teach your children about forgiveness, God s love and mercy, and the basics of the sacraments. If you take some time with heartfelt attention to share stories with your children and look through the materials with them, you have all you need. Remember to remind your child that whatever is told to a priest in confession is a secret. They may not even tell you, the parent, what was discussed. Don t forget to say I forgive you to one another after I m sorry is said. Works of Mercy Shelter the Homeless» Many circumstances could lead to someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to go out and meet those without homes, affirming their worth and helping them seek a resolution to the challenges they face. The Jesuit Teach In is Saturday, Nov. 4 from 1 to 5 PM on the campus of Jesuit High School. The Teach In will focus on learning about immigration and racial justice in our city and our nation. Keynote Addresses include: New Portlanders Policy Commission, Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services, Archdiocese of Portland s office of Life, Justice and Peace and Father Bryan Massingale of Fordham University (Live streamed).
