2 From Our Pastor... Giving Our Gifts for God s Glory! This week we kick-off our Stewardship of Time and Talent process in which we pray, discern and commit to God a portion of our time to serve in the ministries of our parish. By now you should have received in the mail a booklet that describes the various ministries we offer at St. Clare that meet our own parish needs as well as serving those in need of our area. Next weekend each household will process to the Altar with their commitment card, turning over to God part of our time that He Himself has given to us as a gift for His Kingdom. Remember that in the spring we already had our sign-ups for the liturgical ministries of the parish. This booklet and commitment weekend is for the other 60+ ministries beyond serving God at Mass. For those who are new to the parish as well as those of us who have been around for many years, be sure and read through the details of what each ministry does and discern how your own time and talents match up to be of service. Or choose a ministry that stretches and challenges you! There is much to do around your parish home from assisting the poor and marginalized of our area, to mowing the grass, gardening, teaching children, babysitting in the nursery, and many more. There is something for everyone to help out and use your baptismal gifts! Thanks to all of you who already give generously of your time for your parish and God. Your selfless service strengthens or parish and truly builds up the Body of Christ. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow, Fr. Jim Deiters Recent Death: Clete Schwaegel, Husband of Dorothy, Father of Cheryl, Jackie, Joan and Deanna. May he rest in the peace of Christ. Trunk or Treat!! Helpful Strategies for Fall Weather: Fall provides a lot of opportunities for energy and monetary savings as well as home and yard care. We don t need to heat or cool our homes...we can just open our windows for fresh air. And, as winter comes, bundle up a little more inside and set the thermostat lower...it saves energy and a surprising amount of money. Cleaning gutters is a pain, but it prevents water and ice build up in the winter, saving us money and keeping roofing and insulation materials out of the landfills. Check your attic insulation levels and consider adding drapes or storm windows to help keep warm air in and cold out! Stay tuned for more tips next week!

5 Connecting Music to Mass October 9, 2016 Today s readings are found at #1175 in the hymnal. We continue to focus on faith this week in the Liturgy of the Word. I d like to use the responsorial psalm refrain as the central point of today s readings and music The Lord has revealed to the nations His saving power. The first revelation to focus on today is the healing of leprosy. The passage from the first reading focuses on the healing of Naaman, and the enthusiastic gratitude he shows the Lord. We miss something by taking this passage out of context. When the Prophet Elisha initially sent Naaman the message, Go and wash seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will heal, and you will be clean, Naaman was angry because of the simplicity of the ritual. Naaman was a powerful military commander, so he wanted something grander. Eventually he listens to the prophet and is healed. His actions, then, not only express gratitude, but also conversion, devotion, and a willingness to serve. We sing a paraphrase of Psalm 34 during communion. The lament-sounding refrain, The Lord hears the cry of the poor, is juxtaposed with the verses that give God praise. Connecting to today s responsorial psalm we give praise to God for what he has done for us! Naaman s actions of gratitude are echoed in the gospel when one of the ten who was healed comes back to thank the Lord. This one was a Samaritan, a foreigner looked down upon by society. Jesus tells him, your faith has saved you. Trace back to the responsorial psalm The Lord has revealed to the nations The justice, kindness, and faithfulness of the Lord are not for certain people, but for anyone who is willing to follow even an outcast. Our opening hymn - In Christ There Is No East or West (#832) - reflects the message that salvation is available to all, and that in Christ, we are one! St. Paul teaches an invaluableble lesson in his letter to Timothy. He uses his imprisonment to communicate the power of the Word of God. The Lord has revealed to the nations His saving power. Indeed, as Paul says, the Word of God is not chained! Remember the homily last week? Faith is an attitude of trust that God will provide. With that attitude, what if we used our afflictions to preach the gospel? The recessional hymn recounts the many miracles of Jesus public ministry. The third stanza echoes the responsorial psalm Let us sing with joy and gladness, seeing what our God has done and the idea that God s love is universal Praise the One who makes us one. The Word of God is not chained in faith, go and share it! Stephen Eros Director of Liturgy & Music Catholic Men for Christ - October 2016 Pilgrimage and Monthly Meeting The St. Clare CMFC October activities will include the opportunity to make a Jubilee Year of Mercy pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis on Saturday, October 15.
