Centered in the Eucharist, and strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we strive to live the Gospel and further the reign of God. 2 From Our Pastor... Why so much talk of death? One of our teenagers asked me why we Catholics talk so much about death? She made an insightful connection between our feasts of All Saints, All Souls, and the photos of our deceased loved ones that we display during the month of November. I told her, The reason we talk about death so much is that we love LIFE so much! She gave me a strange look until I went on to briefly explain my answer that we reverence each person s death as a sign of how sacred their life was. I then invited her to attend our Adult Ed session coming up on Monday night, November 6, on Caring for the Sick and Dying since I will be talking about the spirituality of both the caregivers and those facing their own death. With more states wrongly embracing euthanasia as a good option to suffering, we Catholics revere each life as a gift to be cared for even during times of suffering. Life is so beautiful. But part of life is that our bodies age, get sick, and die. Jesus taught us how to embrace our suffering and death as a way to Eternal Life. We pray in a special way this month for all caregivers, all our sick, and those near death; that we cherish each person s life...and death...as very sacred gifts. God s Peace, Fr. Jim Deiters Everyone is invited to pray for and send notes of encouragement to the seminarians from our parish and our seminarian-in-residence, Anthony Hyginus, during the Thanksgiving and Advent seasons. Joel Seipp and Nick Fleming, both of whom grew up in St. Clare Parish and graduated from St. Clare School, are discerning the priesthood in the Diocese of Belleville and are in their fourth year of studies. Anthony, originally from Nigeria, is working in our parish this school year as part of his discernment process. Joel Seipp dmbfanjoel1@yahoo.com Sacred Heart School of Theology and Seminary P.O. As a global movement, fair trade brings a en on to people around the world who work under exploita ve condi ons and highlights the true costs of goods in global supply chains. Organiza ons and ac vists, businesses and brands, farmers, workers and ar sans have diligently worked for more than 50 years to bring greater balance to the terms of trade. Fair trade supports farmers and cra speople in developing countries who are socially and economically marginalized. These producers o en face steep hurdles in finding markets and customers for their goods. Again this year, Blessing Baskets will be back. We will be selling beau ful hand made baskets of various sizes, designs and colors. Plow-sharing gi s will be here with various gi and clothing items for sale. These unique and well made items make ideal Christmas gi s. In addi on, we will have handmade items from India that are cra ed by women seeking to earn a living and create an improved life under the direc- on of the Catholic sisters. A new addi on will be Rowena's jewelry, made from African beads. The profits from sales support the Twigs For Kids program which provides summer meals and weekends snacks to poverty level school aged children in Granite City. Colorful African beads make reasonably priced bracelets and necklaces. St Clare's Fair Trade Coffee and Chocolate will be available for purchase as well.
