2 From Our Pastor... Make Holy Week Special! I want to offer this special invitation to everyone to make this year s Holy Week a very special one for you and your family. Be sure to mark off on your calendar the extra liturgies for the Triduum: Thursday night, Friday night, and the Saturday Easter Vigil. This is an important time for parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to teach our children about these ancient traditions! In the midst of our very busy lives with sometimes hectic schedules, I ask you to think about what activities you might do without in order to slow down a bit and really celebrate, reflect, and pray over these significant days of remembering the final days of Jesus life and his Resurrection. This could be done in a variety of ways but here are just a few suggestions: Read the Passion story of Jesus trial and death on your own, reflecting on what will be proclaimed at Mass. You can choose between Matthew s version for this year s Palm Sunday or John s version which is always proclaimed on Good Friday (Jn 18:1-19:42) or do both as a comparison of very unique descriptions of the Passion. Choose to FAST from all electronic/game devices(tv, computer, cell phones), for the Triduum (Holy Thursday until Easter morning) at least in the evenings to have more time for reading, praying, or just visiting with family members or a friend. Get all grocery shopping and other errands done by Monday or Tuesday to have more time at home and less running around in order to come Thursday night rested and prepared to really focus on these high holy days. If weather permits, plan some quiet outdoor time for silent walk. And any other creative ideas to make Holy Week a truly holy experience!! God s Peace, Fr. Jim Deiters Tradition of Veiling the Cross and Statues The custom of veiling the Cross and statues from 9th Century Germany is meant to simplify the worship space to concentrate (internally) on the great essentials of Christ's work of Redemption. It originally represented the veil between God and humanity before Christ s Redemptive work. The intent of this tradition is to create a spiritual hunger to see the face of our Savior, Jesus Christ, once again at Easter. The covering of the cross and other spiritual images makes the celebration of Easter much more significant. For Easter morning, the spiritual images and crucifixes are uncovered as symbols of Christ's presence and close proximity after His Resurrection. 4 Voca on Corner We re so glad you are here at Mass. But, who is missing? Preparing the Way As part of our parish s ini a ve to pray for inac ve Catholics, we are sending brief videos from CatholicsComeHome.org to you every Monday this Lent. If you missed the previous s the videos, you can find them at: This week s video is about responding to difficult situa ons that some mes keep people away from the Church. To Sign Up for our Weekly e-newsle ers go to stclarechurch.org/enewsle er For more videos, visit: onal Guatemala Corner Throughout La n America (Guatemala is no excep on), crucifixes are much more realis c than in the United States. They o en have hair and depict Christ s agony with tortured expressions, postures that convey His pain, and blood flowing from His wounds. For people who live in poverty, depriva on and some- mes oppression, Christ s suffering is a deep part of how they iden fy with Him and His mission to conquer sin and death and bring us new life through His redemp ve suffering. From them, we can learn to turn to Christ not only to help us with our suffering, but also as someone who suffers with us and redeems our suffering, so that, if we bind ourselves to Christ, in the end He will bring good out of the evil we suffer, just as He brought life and salva on out of torture and death. Easter Giving At St. Clare, as at most parishes, we rely on the collections at Christmas and Easter to help offset deficits from the weekly collections.
