2 From Our Pastor... Pillars of Our Parish Farewell Reception When we started getting serious about the building of our new church around 2003, I knew that John Harter was the man we needed to spearhead the project. He and his wife Peg were already very active as volunteers in the parish and I knew of John s expansive experience in both the corporate world and his handy-man skills. John is the man who truly led the entire process of the building of our new church and we will be forever indebted to him for the endless hours and faith-filled passion he gave to our beautiful place of worship. After the church building was finished, I asked him to stay on as part-time facilities manager and he carried us through these first eight years in the new facility. Equally as important to our parish has been the undying, behind-the-scenes ministries of his wife, Peg Harter. Retired early from the corporate world, Peg has been serving our parish in so many ways: from the finances of Oktoberfest to crafting museum-quality banners for our worship, to leading parish fundraisers, and so much more. She has given countless hours of generous service that has blessed our parish abundantly. John and Peg are now retiring fulltime and moving on for rest and travel. Next weekend we honor them with two receptions: Saturday, June 13 after the 5 PM Mass and Sunday, June 14 between 8:30 and 10:30 Masses Please make the time to stop by and thank John and Peg for being such witnesses of stewardship and for the everlasting gift they have given to our parish by leading our church building project!! 4 Eucharistic Adoration This Weekend Sunday, June 7 After the Corpus Christi Procession until 11:40 Monday, June 8 Benediction and Noon Mass Prayer Intentions for June: *That immigrants and refugees may find welcome and respect in the countries to which they come *That the personal encounter with Jesus may arouse in many young people the desire to offer their own lives in priesthood or consecrated life. *For our St. Clare family, especially those entering or moving away Stop by to visit Jesus for a few minutes during this time or Commit to an hour by signing up on the Adoration Time Sheets posted on the center table in the Gathering Space or Mary at gomezclan@aol.com Dear St. Clare family, I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude to all of you for the wonderful farewell I experienced throughout last week. You could not have given me a more special gift than that of the beautiful sycamore trees. Trees are such an integral part of God's creation. I am very humbled and deeply grateful to each one of you for your loving messages and cards and gifts, and for your support in ministry for these many years. My time at St Clare was truly blessed, and I grew ministerially and as a person in so many ways. Please continue to hold me in your prayer, and I shall do the same for you. May we continue to walk the path of courageous discipleship. God's choicest blessings be yours! Love and appreciation, Sister Carolyn CONVOY OF HOPE Serving the Poor in Our Midst On August 15 th of this year, a great community event will take place at the O Fallon City Park. It is called the Convoy of Hope, which is also the name of a faith-based, nonprofit organization whose mission, according to its website, is to feed the world through children s initiatives, community outreaches and disaster response. They bring help and hope to those who are impoverished, hungry and hurting. This event is expected to host about 3,500 guests of honor, each of whom will receive a free haircut, a family portrait, a hot lunch, job and career information and advice, health and dental screenings, community services information, a sack full of groceries to take home, and much more. The Convoy of Hope s goal is that every guest be valued, respected, and treated as a Guest of Honor. St. Clare Parish has agreed to participate in this event along with over 30 other Metro east churches. This is a huge undertaking which will require a minimum of 750 volunteers from the 30 churches. What a wonderful opportunity for members of our parish to look beyond the boundaries of St. Clare Church, to follow Jesus as He tells us, Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one these least brothers [or sisters] of mine, you did for me. MT 25:40 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: All adults are encouraged to sign up and help! Those that are ages may serve, but they must remain in the company of a parent or guardian all day. Volunteers years old may work in any area of service they choose. Every minor serving MUST have their waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. There will be a volunteer rally at 7 PM on August 14 th at O Fallon Township High School Milburn Campus Auditorium, 650 Milburn School Road, O Fallon, IL All volunteers are expected to attend this rally. If you would like more information or to volunteer for this event, please contact Jim Calandro at colonelc2002@sbcglobal.net or call

Proverbs 11:24 What Difference Does It Make? We come to Mass for a variety of reasons. Maybe it s because in our family, we are expected to go each week to cross off that box. Perhaps it s because we enjoy mee ng with friends at Church, grabbing a doughnut a er Mass, or just the feeling we get being in a prayerful space. Maybe we skip a Sunday here and there. What difference does going to Mass really make? It is at Mass that we meet Christ in the most in mate way, receiving Him in the Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of the Chris an life (CCC 1324). The Eucharist gives us the strength to become more like Jesus and to follow God s perfect plan for each of us, giving greater purpose to our daily struggles and joys. By joining together as a whole community at Mass, the Body and Blood of Christ unites us all as one body, the Church, His Beloved in communion with each other and with God. Once a militant opponent of the Catholic Church, Dr. Sco Hahn highlights the key misunderstandings people have about the Eucharist. In this powerful presenta on, Understanding the Eucharist, he explains the Church s teaching from a scriptural and historical perspec ve in an entertaining and thorough fashion. In True Worship, Fr. Mike Schmitz, director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth and Chaplain for the Newman Center at the Univ. of Minnesota- Duluth, inspires and educates in these energe c talks about the highest form of worship the Mass. Through these three homilies, filled with deep reflec on on the Scriptures and vibrant stories, Fr. Mike makes sure you will never experience the Mass in the same way again. O Sacrament most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment Thine. We believe that Jesus Christ is really, truly and substantially present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. Eucharis c Adora on June 7-8

We wish them all a blessed re rement! Saint Clare Seniors! Have a Sundae on a Monday! Senior Ice Cream Social Monday, June 8 at 6:30 p.m. In the Fellowship Hall Our senior citizens make our parish great! In his first homily as pope, Francis said: Let us protect Christ in our lives, so that we can protect others, so that we can protect crea on. The voca on of being a protector, however, is not just something involving us Chris ans alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protec ng all crea on; the beauty of the created world as the Book of Genesis and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. In the end, everything has been entrusted to our protec on. Be protectors of God s gi s. I would like to ask all those who have posi ons of responsibility in economic, poli cal and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be protectors of crea on, protectors of God s plan inscribed in nature; protectors of one another and of the environment. Let us not allow omens of destruc on of earth to accompany the advance of this world! What does this mean to us? How does ecology fit into faithful living? What is human ecology? What does Pope Francis say about climate change? Does saving the environment save humanity? How does global warming dispropor onately impact people who are poor? Scholars expect these and other ques ons to be answered in the first encyclical authored by Pope Francis. The Earth Concerns Commi ee will study this encyclical when it is available to the public. Everyone is invited to join us. What to Hope for in Pope Francis First Encyclical, John A. Coleman
