2 From Our Pastor... Sharing Gifts with our Sister Parish Last Sunday was our Kids Helping Kids Guatemala Scholarship Benefit Talent Show. Our parish children, their families, and even some adults shared their time and talent to raise money for scholarships. As you know, the scholarship fund for our sister parish is close to my heart: it was the charity for my 25 th Jubilee. Thank you to all the participants, attendees, and organizers for using your gifts for others. Through your hard work and participation, you shared beauty and joy with others and the gift of an education with those who cannot afford it. Thank you. On a related note, a small group of parishioners and I are visiting our sister parish this January 3-10, and I am extending an invitation to every parishioner to consider joining me. There is a limited amount of time and space to sign up. Contact Matt Flynn or matthewflynn5@gmail.com for information by this Friday, Oct. 28. Every time we go, we are inspired by our sister parish to deepen our faith and grow closer to Christ. We have time to relax, build relationships with our sister parish, see the projects and initiatives that we help fund, and join in meals and celebrations. What a great way to mark the beginning of our 150 th anniversary as a parish! The cost of the trip is around $1,000 per person, including airfare (the bulk of the expense), a night in a bed and breakfast in the historic city of Antigua on our last day, in country travel, and a few meals. The rest of our room and board is provided by our sister parish. Our flight has changed prices several times ($ ), so it is hard to give a better estimate at this time. We currently have space for about 5 more people. I hope you will consider joining us, and, once again, thank you to everyone who helps support our sister parish and scholarship fund through your efforts, financial contributions, and prayers. All praise to God who multiplies our gifts and weaves them together, even across borders and continents, Fr. Jim Deiters Many thanks to all who have stepped up and become parish stewards by selecting ways to share your time and talent on this Commitment Weekend. By giving a portion of your giftedness for God s glory, you re helping make St. Clare Parish a vibrant, strong and faith-filled Catholic community! If you forgot to bring your yellow commitment card or just need a bit more time to discern, don t worry! Cards can be turned in or mailed to the parish office at your convenience. In a few weeks, ministry heads will be in touch with all who have signed up to welcome you and to provide the information you need to get started. We re so grateful for all who make involvement at St. Clare Parish a priority in their busy lives! 4 Connecting Music to Mass Today s readings are found at #1181 in the hymnal. As I mentioned last week, Ordinary Time is a refresher course on discipleship. On this journey, we hear about a series of themes. For instance, the first two Sundays in October focused on faith; last Sunday we expanded on faith by hearing about prayer specifically, the importance of persistent prayer. This week we re challenged to examine the authenticity of those things. As usual, Jesus uses extreme and startling examples in his parable. Lord, teach us how to pray comes to mind after hearing the prayer of the Pharisee. He starts off okay by thanking God, but the rest of the prayer sounds like a Pharisee of the Year Award speech. You ll also notice the only mention of others is in a demeaning context. On the other hand, the tax collector s prayer is simple, to the point, and authentic. He acknowledges his sinfulness and repents. This echoes the message of the First Reading from Sirach: the Lord hears the prayer of the orphan and the widow (orphans and widows were vulnerable, marginalized, and oppressed). The Lord doesn t show partiality based on social status; he knows and hears his true disciples. Due to increases in costs incurred with providing highest quality professional Catholic media, Lighthouse Catholic Media has recently had to increase prices for customers of their CDs, books, booklets and MP3 Download credits (available through our website Lighthouse link). Which means that when we as a parish order new titles, we have to pay a bit more to restock our kiosk. Lighthouse Catholic Media is a non-profit organization, so it is only with your donations that we are able to update our kiosk with engaging, information and inspirational ways to learn and grow in your Catholic faith. New Suggested Donations: CD.$4 or 3 CDs for $10 Books.$5 Booklets...$3 Pamphlets, which are donated to our parish, are free Your feedback is greatly appreciated and if there are any topics that are of interest to you, please fill out a comment from on the kiosk and drop it in the payment slot at the bottom. Thank You! The opening hymn Deliver Us, O Lord of Truth (#750) gets us engaged in the gospel parable right away by imploring the Lord to deliver us from words that are unbacked by deed. In the second stanza, weightless words are compared to building your house on sand, a metaphor from a different parable. The fourth stanza asks God to help our actions follow our words to put our creed into deeds. James 2:26 comes to mind: For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. The hymn text challenges us to examine the authenticity of our faith, and how we put it into action or not. Paul s letter to Timothy serves as an example of an authentic life of discipleship. Even in his final days after much trial and tribulation, Paul glorifies God! He names the ways God has strengthened and sustained him in his ministry of evangelization. If you ever need an example of persistent, authentic, and unwavering faith, start reading one of St. Paul s epistles. We go out into the world today with the example of St. Paul. The hymn text God Whose Purpose is to Kindle (#813) invokes mission and evangelization. Let us ask the Holy Spirit for the courage to put our creed into deed this week, just as St. Paul did. 5 As is our tradition at St. Clare, we remember our deceased loved ones throughout the month of November by displaying family photos in our shrines to St. Joseph and our Blessed Mother Mary. You may drop off framed pictures in either shrine for our Art & Environment team to arrange beginning the weekend of October The photos will be displayed through the Feast of Christ the King, November In order to allow us to accommodate as many photos as possible, please no pictures larger than 8 x 10. Please include your name and number on back of photos. Consecration to Jesus through Mary November 3 December 8 Registration this weekend after Mass We are living in troubled times, with increasing persecution of Christians, school shootings, war, attacks on marriage and family, culture conflicts, and more. Pope Francis, in calling for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy that began last December, says that mercy is the key to our hope. How can we grow in mercy? According to Pope Francis, one way is to draw closer to Jesus and His Mercy through Mary, His mother and ours. Join us November 3 as we begin a 33-day preparation for Marian Consecration. For five weeks, we ll read about and reflect on four great Marian saints: St. Louis de Montfort, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Mother Teresa and St. Pope John Paul II. The Works of Mercy can sometimes seem like heroic and remote events, like Mother Teresa s work in Calcutta. Come learn how the Works of Mercy can be daily, accessible activities. One of our parishioners, Margarita Crupe, will give a short talk on the meaning she finds in attending and participating in funeral Masses. There will be time for questions and discussion afterwards. Saturday, November 5th after 5pm Mass Sunday, November 6th between Masses In the Fellowship Hall *Other future dates featuring Works of Mercy will be scheduled. THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW For the New Liturgical Year Interested in learning more about the Gospel for the upcoming liturgical year?
