2 Music and Liturgy... October 25 Mary Anne Orr Jumping right in from last week, one of the headliners of the Second Vatican Council was the assembly s active role in the liturgy. Through this change, the pipe organ transitioned from accompanying soft Gregorian Chant and playing incidental music, to a strong, supportive presence to lead the assembly in song. While there is unsurpassable value in the Church s treasury of music before Vatican II, the statement below is the essence of what the council calls us to One cannot find anything more religious and more joyful in sacred celebrations than a whole congregation expressing its faith and devotion in song. Musicam Sacram (1967) In recent years, our philosophy of music at St. Clare has shifted to reflect statements such as the above. Though we are one Body of Christ, there are plenty of opinions and preferences to be shared! I know many people who love to listen to contemporary Christian music; others who prefer a more subdued, reflective style of music; and others that prefer the folk style music that debuted after Vatican II. There are more, but I m running out of column space! These and similar styles are certainly spiritually valid, and are effective for personal prayer and intimate group settings. But we have to remember that the nature of the Mass is communal, public, and extroverted. Some parts of the Mass certainly are reflective, but they still call for each person s participation. Even in these moments, all 300 or so people in the pews should be making substantial noise together! I ended last week by mentioning that the organ s function in the Catholic liturgy has always been relative to singing, and how the air-driven nature of the organ reflects that of the human voice. The organ s effortless ability to sustain sound makes it practically and acoustically ideal for leading the assembly. While it may be the leader, a leader is nothing without its followers. No one in the assembly should stay silent your voice is needed! Let everything that has breath give praise to the Lord! From the Church he receives the Word of God containing the teachings of the law of Christ. From the Church he receives the grace of the sacraments that sustains him on the way. From the Church he learns the example of holiness and recognizes its model and source in the all-holy Virgin Mary; he discerns it in the authentic witness of those who live it; he discovers it in the spiritual tradition and long history of the saints who have gone before him and whom the liturgy celebrates in the rhythms of the sanctoral cycle.
