2 From Our Pastor... Each year during Lent, I think it is helpful to review some of our Catholic terminology as we hear words and phrases during this season that may still be new for some people. Fast doing with less less food, less negative words or complaining, less material things; to eliminate something from my daily routine in order to make more room for God in my life. Traditionally, to fast means having only one simple meal a day, with little or no food the rest of the day. (Officially required on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday only). Some have the courage/ability to choose to go a whole day with only water. It is helpful to think of something that you want to keep doing without even after Easter. Abstinence to do without meat for the day; for some this may mean abstaining from something else as a sacrifice. (Required every Friday of Lent; some choose year round). Triduum the three high holy days, beginning with Mass on Holy Thursday night and ending with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday (based on the Jewish calendar, sunset on Thursday through sunset on Sunday makes up three days). The Easter Vigil (Saturday night) is the climax of the both the Triduum and the whole Church Year. Elect those who have been studying the Scriptures and Church Teachings for a year and who were elected by the parish and bishop on the first Sunday of Lent to enter the final part (Period of Purification) of preparation for the Easter sacraments to be received at the Easter Vigil. Candidate a person who is already baptized as a Christian in another denomination and is now seeking full communion with the Catholic faith through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. Scrutiny a rite celebrated on the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, with the Elect asking the parish to pray for them in their conversion to Jesus Christ. Special scriptures and prayers help them name any weaknesses and sin from which they want to be set free at their upcoming baptism. Our prayers for them help them resist any temptations from the devil and thus we also use the word exorcism for the prayers we use for the three scrutinies. These take place during one of the Masses for those three weekends. You may want to keep this short vocabulary list handy during Lent, using it as a discussion guide for dinner conversations with a friend, spouse, and/or your children. Maybe have the children create flash cards for a family game with these and other Catholic words. Blessings for a Spirit-filled Lent, Fr. 5 This month at St. Clare we join in communion with the en re Church community during our 24-hour monthly Eucharis c Adora on on March 4-5, praying for the inten ons of Pope Francis, which can be read in whole at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops usccb.org website or on our website stclarechurch.org. Every Lent the Church throughout the world celebrates the Scru nies to help the Elect prepare to be ini ated into the Catholic Church at Easter through Bap sm, Confirma on and the Eucharist. These minor exorcisms help strengthen the Elect on their journey as well as reveal to them the areas of their life that s ll need to be illumined by God s grace. The Church asks the congrega on to par cipate in these Scru nies as well through our prayer and support. They also serve as moments for us to examine our own lives. In prepara on for the Scru ny on Sunday, March 4 at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, you are encouraged to reflect on the following ques ons: How is your life a well or spring already? When have you been water for the thirsty? Are the rela onships in your life healthy and life giving? For what do you thirst? What do you long for? Are parts of your life like a desert, dry and parched? How can Christ and His message of love and mercy (con nue to) change your life? FAITH AND JUSTICE INTERNSHIP WITH BELLEVILLE DIOCESE The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is the domestic, anti-poverty social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops. This year, CCHD is offering a local paid internship for Catholics in our diocese to help promote the important work of CCHD and to offer experience working with and on behalf of those in poverty. The internship will provide practical work in carrying out the mandate of CCHD, opportunities to develop relationships with community leaders, reflection on Catholic social teaching, and opportunities for sharing the experience with other CCHD interns. The internship is paid at an hourly rate of $12/hour and requires hours a week from September through April. Adult Catholics of all ages are encouraged to apply, especially those with an interest in Catholic social justice. A special big thank you to Father Jim who was so very kind and helpful easing our pain after Tom s untimely death.
