2 The Gift of The Anointing of the Sick Jesus came to heal the whole person, body and soul. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is, first and foremost, a way of mediating an encounter with Christ who heals us and makes us whole. It can be bestowed on Catholics who suffer from possibly life threatening illnesses or conditions or from the effects of frailty and old age. Catholics who are about to undergo a serious medical operation should receive it as well. Through the anointing, we hope and pray for healing and wholeness. When we see Jesus in the Gospels, He seems to heal people all the time. The blind, deaf, and mute are often beggars. Paralytics suffer the same way. People possessed by demons were feared and avoided. Those with contagious diseases, like leprosy, had to live on their own or in colonies with others similarly afflicted. Others, like the woman with the hemorrhage, would have been considered unclean. Jesus does not just heal them, he sends people to the Temple to show they are clean, tells them to return to their families, allows them to participate in society, and removes the stigma that they or their family must somehow have sinned. Jesus doesn t just heal. He lets them be whole. When we celebrate the Anointing of the Sick during Mass, we do the same thing. We let those who are suffering from the afflictions of poor health, disorders, and diseases know that they are still a part of us because one of the things illness and age can do is to separate and isolate us from our community. We pray for health and spiritual strength, recognizing that, even if there is no physical recovery, the Holy Spirit still bestows peace, courage, and the grace to persevere. Our presence and support can also help those who receive the Anointing of the Sick continue to be made whole through God s grace. Because of this emphasis on spiritual wholeness and health even before physical healing, the prayers and anointing include a petition for God s mercy and forgiveness, something we all need to be assured of. Our Communal Anointing of the Sick will take place Saturday, September 10 at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Even if you and your loved ones are healthy, please come to this beautiful celebration to support and pray for the members of our community who are in need of healing and strength. Recent Death: Deacon Bob Lippert, formerly served as Deacon at St. Clare in before being assigned as pastoral associate at St. Anthony Parish in Beckemeyer. We extend our prayerful sympathy to his wife, Lucille, and his children, and his entire parish family. May he rest in the peace of Christ. THANK YOU! 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4 Surely He doesn t mean it! I mean hating my relatives to be a disciple! Really? In order to be a disciple today, Jesus says give up what holds you back, carry your own cross, follow Me and not someone else. To be a disciple today, Jesus says, will take a consuming dedication, relentless mercy, love and compassion. Jesus wants disciples. Jesus wants me. To what, to whom am I hanging on too tight? What is the cross I must pick up? RESPECT LIFE CORNER This Labor Day, we draw our attention to our sisters and brothers who face twin crises deep trials in both the world of work and the state of the family. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: These challenging times can push us toward despair. Into this reality, the Church shares a word of hope, directing hearts and minds to the dignity of each human person and the sanctity of work itself, which is given by God. She seeks to replace desperation and isolation with human concern and true solidarity, reaffirming the trust in a good and gracious God who knows what we need before we ask him. In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge. (Psalm 90:1) Please join us as we begin our study of the Book of Exodus. This year, join us for a Pilgrimage of Faith as we listen to God s voice speaking to us in the Book of Exodus and see how it sets the foundations of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Meetings are held Wednesdays from 9:30-11:30 at St. Clare of Assisi. Join us on September 14 for our visitor's day and introduction to Exodus! For more information call Kathleen ( ) or Kristy ( ) or www. thecornerstonescripturestudy.org.

5 Connecting Music to Mass September 4, 2016 Today s readings are found at #1160 in the hymnal. Jesus has a firm reminder for us this week discipleship comes at a cost. We hear about the cost Paul paid in the second reading - his letter to Philemon - written while in prison. a prisoner for Christ. Jesus address in the gospel is abrupt. You can picture a crowd of people following Him, when, seemingly out of nowhere, He turns around and lets them know the risk of discipleship. He uses the metaphor of an architect or builder constructing a tower, and a king commanding his army. Consider the price your goal will cost (and what may come up along the way) before making a hasty decision. As 21st century Christians we realize these risks! And yet we still choose to come back week after week to encounter Jesus in Word and Sacrament, and to be challenged in new ways as we go out into the world. Is it worth it? The hymn Take Up Your Cross (#801) begins our celebration with the bit of good news that, yes, this life is worth the risk. Throughout the hymn text, we hear echoes of recent gospels. And humbly follow after me (The one who humbles himself ) His grace shall bear your spirit up (Blessed are the poor in spirit ) And let your foolish pride be still (The rich man who took pride in his possessions) Amid all this, the good news is found in the concluding stanza For those who humbly bear the cross One day will wear the glorious crown! Of course, part of our duty as disciples is to share the good news of the resurrection. Today, we are sent forth with the message, Go Make of All Disciples (#769). Evangelization is not just going door to door, or standing on the street corner with a Bible. The end of the first stanza reminds us of a very common way to share Christ And let our daily living reveal you everywhere. As baptized members of the Body of Christ, we each have a vocation (stanza 3) to serve the Church in different ways. It s through the sharing of these gifts that we build up the Body of Christ, and share that message with others. The next part of stanza 3 offers a beautiful image We cultivate the nature God plants in every heart. Countering the image of the stereotypical shouting street corner evangelist, we have a farmer or gardener, gently cultivating God s creation. From the planting of the seed, the caretaker waters and fertilizes, watching it grow into something much larger than the seed. The end result is goodness, whether a flower to reveal God s beauty, or a fruit or vegetable to nourish our bodies. This gentle cultivation is the true work of evangelization that each of us can achieve through encounters with strangers, friends, and even our own family members. On this Sunday, as the Church celebrates the canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata - an extraordinary contemporary disciple - let us pray for her intercession in our life of discipleship and in our work of evangelization.
