We do this by creating a vibrant faith community, by actively promoting justice and evangelization, and by using our gifts in the service of God s people, to give God glory and reverence all of Creation. 2 From Our Pastor... Witnesses to the Holy Spirit! As we celebrate the feast of Jesus Ascension and prepare for Pentecost next weekend, our parish is especially focusing on the Eucharist as the center of our parish life, where the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within us through Christ s Body and Blood. We are trying something new this year and having our stewardship sign-ups for all the liturgical ministries take place at this time of Pentecost instead of the usual time in the fall. The other parish ministries (outreach, adult ed, etc) will have their sign-ups in October. Did you know that it takes over one hundred (107 to be exact) volunteer parishioners each weekend to serve at all three of our liturgies and help make them prayerful and welcoming? We are blessed with many who are committed to these ministries but we are seeking out more parishioners to share their gifts and sign-up for some role in the Mass, in addition to the important role of the assembly giving praise. I am making a special call out for new people to sign up and serve as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (serving the Body and Blood), Ushers and Greeters. We currently have 98 Eucharistic Ministers and each Mass requires 13! Of course we also need people in all the other areas you will see listed in the ministry booklet attached. Please note that very few ministries are limited to a specific age, so this is a great way for our young people to get more involved as well. The goal of course is to give praise to God at Mass by the use of our time and talent for His Glory and Honor. Let us ask the Spirit of Pentecost to enkindle within us a fire for full, active, and conscious participation in the Holy Mass. Come Holy Spirit Come! Fr. Jim Deiters Parish Pentecost Festival We Need You! Our festival features delicious food from our own parishioners homelands, games for the kids, entertainment for all! Please sign up today! Ongoing Inquiry Sessions are a great opportunity to explore your interest in the Catholic Faith no commitment necessary. Sessions are informal and relaxed, include light refreshments and discussion, and usually occur in a parishioner s home. If you know anyone interested in Catholicism or searching for a spiritual home, please share this opportunity with them. Contact Matthew Flynn (matthewflynn5@gmail.com or ) to sign up or for more information Guatemala Corner The first capital of Guatemala was founded on the site of a Kakchikel-Maya city, now called Iximche, on Monday, July 25, 1524 the day of Saint James and therefore named Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Goathemalan (City of Saint James of the Knights of Guatemala). Naturally, St. James was the patron saint of the city. But, on September 11, 1541, the capital was destroyed by a devastating lahar from the Volcán de Agua. On March 10, 1543, the Spanish conquistadors founded a new capital and named it Santiago de los Caballeros. For more than 200 years it served as the seat of the military governor of the Spanish colony of Guatemala, a large region that included almost all of presentday Central America and the southernmost State of Mexico: Chiapas. In 1776, after a series of earthquakes damaged much of Santiago de los Caballeros (now known as 'Antigua'), the Spanish Crown ordered the removal of the capital to a safer location, the Valley of the Shrine, where Guatemala City, the modern capital of Guatemala, now stands. This new city was christened Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción (New Guatemala of the Assumption) and has Our Lady of the Assumption as its patron. R L C Human Trafficking In the United States, vic ms of trafficking are all around us in poorly regulated industries like agriculture, in-home domes c work, nursing home work and the food-service industry. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray: Human trafficking is a pro-life issue. It is about respect for men, women and children; it is about human rights. Discern your own ability to fight human trafficking, whether through volunteering, material dona ons, aware-raising or working to change and enforce laws. Pray that we recognize the opportunity to start making a difference. It is not too late to learn more about human trafficking! Please visit You can watch a brief video, read about ongoing efforts to fight human trafficking, read people's stories, and take ac on by pe oning your elected representa ves. You can also find the video and informa on link posted on our Facebook page. ST. CLARE RETREATS Please a end an open parish mee ng on Thursday, May 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The purpose of the mee ng is to explore the ques ons how well is St. Clare's retreat ministry currently mee ng the spiritual needs of our parishioners? and in what ways can we improve? In order to answer these ques ons, we would like to hear from parishioners about their experiences with the parish s Men s and Women s Renewal Retreats as well as from parishioners who have had other retreat experiences or who have not been able to or have chosen not to a end our Men s and Women s Renewal Retreats. If you are unable to a end but would s ll like to provide feedback, please contact Ma hew Flynn at the parish office. Thank you! Green Corner Whenever these questions are raised, some react by accusing others of irrationally attempting to stand in the way of progress and human development. But we need to grow in the conviction that a decrease in the pace of production and consumption can at times give rise to another form of progress and development. Efforts to promote a sustainable use of natural resources are not a waste of money, but rather an investment capable of providing other economic benefits in the medium term. If we look at the larger picture, we can see that more diversified and innovative forms of production which impact less on the environment can prove very profitable. It is a matter of openness to different possibilities which do not involve stifling human creativity and its ideals of progress, but rather directing that energy along new channels. (Pope Francis, Laudato Si', 191)

5 Feed My Lambs Stewardship Share God s Gifts You have been given wonderful gi s from God Will you share them? Summer Lunch Program Feed My Lambs is a program that benefits local youth who receive free lunches during the school year. Over the summer, these students aren t in school but are still in need. In response, a group of local churches established the Feed My Lambs program and, now in their fourth year, provide lunch to over 200 students five days a week. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up for this year's Feed My Lambs program after all Masses on May 21 and 22 in the Gathering Space. They are seeking donations of food and money and volunteers to prepare and deliver lunches to children of the O'Fallon area. Several local churches are involved so that each day of the week can be covered. St. Clare and St. Nicholas parishes have worked together in the past to provide lunches one day each week. Work of Human Hands Coordinator Needed Every year, St. Clare hosts a Work of Human Hands Sale to promote just trade and labor practices that respect the dignity of workers and their work. Sales benefit people and organizations that operate according to just trade principles. This has always been an opportunity for our parishioners to learn more about just trade and to contribute to building a more just economy one small step at a time. This year, we are in need of a new coordinator to help organize volunteers, coordinate with individuals and organizations, and oversee other aspects of the sale. The sale has traditionally taken place in November and only occurs once a year, meaning that the majority of the time commitment is concentrated in the Fall. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Matthew Flynn at or matthewflynn5@gmail.com.
