University Presbyterian Church Order of Worship December 10, am 3rd Sunday of Advent << WE GATHER >> Call to Worship: Luke 2:9-14 (p. 833) 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger." 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" Revelations 19:1 Jeffrey LaValley Hallelujah, salvation and glory Honor and power unto the Lord our God For the Lord our God is mighty Yes, the Lord our God is omnipotent The Lord our God, He is wonderful Hallelujah, Salvation and glory Honor and power Unto the Lord our God For the Lord our God is mighty Yes, the Lord our God is omnipotent The Lord our God He is Wonderful Hallelujah, Salvation and glory Honor and power Unto the Lord our God For the Lord our God is Mighty Yes, The Lord our God is omnipotent The Lord our God He is wonderful All praises be To the King of Kings And the Lord our God He is wonderful

Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah, He is wonderful Shout to the Lord tonight Shout to the Lord tonight Shout to the Lord tonight Scripture Reading and Lighting of the Advent Candle 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Luke 1:46-49) O Come, O Come Emmanuel Thomas Helmore, based on plainsong O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Rejoice, rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death's dark shadows put to flight. O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind; Bid envy, strife, and quarrels cease; fill all the world with heaven s peace. Welcome & Greeting Time O Come All Ye Faithful Latin hymn, arr. John F. Wade, 1751 O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold him born the King of Angels, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord. Sing choirs of angels, sing in exultation. Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above: Glory to God, all glory in the highest. Yea, Lord, we greet thee. Born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory given; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. Hark the Herald Angels Sing Felix Mendelssohn; words: Charles Wesley Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King:

Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Joyful, all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies; With angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem! Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, Late in time behold him come, offspring of the Virgin s womb: Veiled in flesh, the God-head see; hail the incarnate Deity, Pleased as man with us to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, Born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King! Invitation to Children s Worship Prayer of Confession & Assurance of Pardon Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-24 (p. 787) 19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 "No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. Offering (Christmas) Paul Baloche The sun cannot compare to the glory of your love, There is no shadow in your presence. No mortal man would dare to stand before your throne, Before the Holy One of heaven. It s only by your blood, And it s only through your mercy, Lord, I come. I bring an offering of worship to my King, No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing. Jesus, may you receive the honor that you re due, O Lord, I bring an offering to you. I bring an offering to you.

I bring an offering of worship to my King No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due O Lord I bring an offering to You I bring an offering to you <<WE HEAR>> Year-End Giving Video Offering Moment and Prayer of Dedication Tithes & Offerings: Go Tell It On the Mountain Traditional spiritual; words: John W. Work Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o er silent flocks by night, Behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. The shepherds feared and trembled when, lo! above the earth Rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior s birth. Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born, And God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. Sermon: Rest in Our Finances Ken Sunoo Text: Matthew 6:19-24 (p. <<WE RESPOND>> Response Song and Prayers for Peace Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. We Three Kings John Henry Hopkins, Jr. We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts, we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O Star of wonder, star of night; star with royal beauty bright Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy Perfect Light. Born a King on Bethlehem s plain; gold I bring to crown him again King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. O Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and Sacrifice Alleluia, Alleluia, Earth to heav'n replies: O Commissioning of Inter-generational Mexico Team Benediction _+_+_+_+_+_+_ PASTORAL PARTICIPANTS Ken Sunoo, Pastor, Global Ministries Brandon Bleek, Associate Director of Adult Discipleship Theresa Froehlich, Liturgist Thomas Tang, Liturgist CANDLELIGHTERS are Justin and Kate McAllister, and their sons Henry and Owen MUSICIANS Elias Bullock, worship leader/piano/director, UPC Gospel Choir Suzanne Mason, vocals/interim Director of Contemporary Worship Ken McNichols, B3 Tracy Arrington, bass guitar Timothy Davis, drums CURRENT SERMON SERIES: REST let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts "Peace!" the angel announces at the birth of the holy child. "Glory to God in the highest heaven and on earth peace " So why so much stress in our lives? Maybe it's not so much the work we are doing as much as the work behind our work. Maybe it's not so much about what we are doing but why we are doing it. This Advent Jesus catches us trying to live at the speed of thought and slogging through unprecedented levels of anxiety, vitriol, and uncertainty. But he invites us to step aside and find his rest. "Come unto me, all you who are weary..." (Matthew 11:28).
