3 In Loving Memory John D'Apollo & Jane McGilligan May They Rest in Peace! Care of the Sick... The Priests and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion will bring communion to anyone unable to attend Mass. Please call the rectory office at to make these arrangements. We Pray for... Please pray for those who are ill; we remember: Baby River, Fr. Feeney, Sue Collins, Anna Marie Convery, Baby Noah Corazo, Margaret Curley, Nicholas D Angelo, Bernadette Deeck, Baby Lucy Scott DeLuca, Thomas DeLuca, Evelyn DePetre, Nicholas DiEmedio, Lucy Duda, Doris & George Egan, Lydia Galati, Melody Gamble, Stephen Henry, Robert Imbrogna, Mary Iovino, Anne Marie Jay, Jeff Jay, Catherine Kane, Clare Keenan, Jack Kernickle, Diana Land, Nancy Mancko, Frank Martin, Nick Massi, Paul Mattus, Scott McCoy, Eileen Moran, Fiora Miller, Joseph Miller, Betty Monahan, Anthony Naddeo, Joan Lynn, Stephen McNamee, John Moran, Linda Pulver, Dorothy Sciarra, Sabrina Szerszen, Mark Tancredi & Suzanne Trainor. PRAYER FOR PRIESTS Lord God, most holy, we approach you in gratitude for your holy ordained priesthood. You have called these men to be set apart and to shepherd your people, as you shepherd your entire church. We pray for them in their daily work. Grant to them an increase in spiritual gifts and grace, so they may be prepared for the tasks at hand. Lead them not into temptation and protect them from the grasp of the evil one. It is through the sacraments they confer that we encounter the divine in a real and profound way. May your church never lose sight of these, your special sons, and may we, the body of Christ, never fail to cherish the gift of their lives, which they have freely given to you and your holy church. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen. NEW SANCTUARY CHAIRS The more observant among us will have noticed new chairs for the priest and deacons in the Church sanctuary at OLP. They originally belonged to Holy Spirit parish in Sharon Hill, and Fr Oswald was kind enough to allow us to recycle them here at OLP. Deacons Charlie and John cleaned them up, applied a coat of varnish; and Deacon Charlie also made the cushions so that chairs match the other chairs in the sanctuary. I think they look very nice; and, in my humble opinion, are a better match with the overall lines and shape of the Church sanctuary. I hope you do too. FATHER DOMINIC Father Dominic is due back this week from visiting his family in Pakistan. I'm sure he's enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his elderly parents. Please keep him in your prayers for a safe journey home to the United States and to OLP parish. LAST DAYS OF SUMMER I hope you can enjoy the last days of the summer season; hopefully, they'll afford you some time for rest, relaxation and spiritual enrichment. Taking some extra time with the Lord during these summer days can be a great blessing, and also can help us to "re-charge" our spiritual life, our friendship with the Lord. PLEASE KEEP FATHER FEENEY IN YOUR PRAYERS Father Feeney had a heart attack and heart bypass surgery. The latest word is that Father came through the surgery well and is currently on the mend. Please keep him in your prayers. Father Devlin Pastor s Column... GREAT PEOPLE = GREAT PARISH

CANDLE IN MEMORY OF: STATUE OF: REQUESTED BY: Schedule Changes BENEDICTION For the rest of the summer, BENEDICTION on Mondays WILL NOW TAKE 3:30 PM AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET. Since many people are away or off their usual schedules, finding enough people for adoration on Mondays during the summer has been a challenge. Leaving the exposed Blessed Sacrament unattended in an opened Church is not proper. And since the A/C in Church is running all day on Mondays until after 7:30 PM, it is also not good stewardship of the parish's resources. We apologize for any inconvenience. We'll re-visit this schedule in the Fall. Thank you. DEACON S ATTIC (OLP) - RELIGIOUS STORE The thrift shop will be CLOSED for the month of July and August. Will re-open again in September. 8 Scripture Readings for the week Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Most food shoppers know that trips to the supermarket are never a matter of grab n go. Having joined their ranks in my retirement, with doctors and would-be nutritionists ever ready with advice, I know you have to read the labels carefully and consider weights and measures (pardon me) as weighty matters. So I must check the calorie count. And ask the label to tell me all about salt and sugar content. Is there enough protein in it, I ask myself, to merit a short descent from shelf to cart? All this compels me to offer a much-delayed salute to my Mom and every rectory cook I have known for what they went through at the supermarket. But when it comes to the matter of that most special food and drink that comes the fore in the gospels, we enter a different realm entirely, where such checking is out of place. You as a believer know why. It s because of both the divine purveyor and the food itself: Christ Jesus our Lord. He is the content. There is no equal to the excellence of this product. The Bread of Life theme dominates St. John s sixth chapter, and we have for several Sundays so far received a summertime refresher course on just what it is we believe and how we should appreciate the gift of the Eucharist as we bring our suntanned selves to the altar. We begin with the fact that the Eucharist, as a sacrament, is nothing less than a gift from God meant to express His love and His desire to be part of our lives on earth. Later, God willing, in heaven, we won t need it because we will be a part of God s life more directly and joined with Him in bliss. Meanwhile, here on earth it s a daily challenge to let God live in us. It s all a matter of trial and error, with evil always stalking our moments of joy and shortening them. Sometimes we just can t smile. Sin caused all that, yours and mine, all the way back to that disappointing duo that just couldn t keep their hands off a certain forbidden tree. What we believe is starkly simple but far from ordinary. What we believe is that on the first Holy Thursday, surrounded by a mere eleven close friends, the real Jesus took simple unleavened bread and a cup of ordinary wine and identified Himself with it. Note here, for the sake of combating several misinterpretations that other Christian bodies make, Jesus did not say that this was a symbol of Himself. No, this really is His Body and Blood, His real presence under the appearances of bread and wine. As mysterious as what Jesus does through His priests really is, I can only wonder how others can t take the simple words body and blood at face value. The sad fact is that many Catholics these days are yielding to the same misinterpretation. Meanwhile, we believe in what Jesus said and did and still does for us. It s the safest food out there, with no human intervention or alteration, and if it s not part of our weekly diet we are spiritually malnourished. The good news is that this greatest meal ever made is here presented by the greatest Host of all. So come to the feast every week. Jesus believes you are worthy of His invitation. Stop by the supermarket later. Reflections & Prayers for the week "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me." - Jn 6:56-57 Readings for the Week of August 19, 2018 Sunday: Prv 9:1-6/Ps 34:2-3, 10-11, 12-13, [9a]/Eph 5:15-20/Jn 6:51-58 FIRST READING: Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom s house is her school and the world as a whole, complete with its seven foundational pillars. The banquet is her teaching. Everyone is invited to eat and drink at the table. SECOND READING: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul contrasts the wise with the foolish, and then presents his admonitions for his readers to act as Spirit-filled people. He also urges them to practice gratitude. GOSPEL: John 6:51-58 The famous Bread of Life discourse continues. Here John puts an emphasis on the Jesus flesh and blood as true and essential food. This eating of this bread guarantees eternal life for all who partake of it. Monday: Ez 24:15-24/Dt 32:18-19, 20, 21 [cf. 18a]/Mt 19:16-22 Tuesday: Ez 28:1-10/Dt 32:26-27ab, 27cd-28, 30, 35cd- 36ab [39c]/Mt 19:23-30 Wednesday: Ez 34:1-11/Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6 [1]/Mt 20:1-16 Thursday: Ez 36:23-28/Ps 51:12-13, 14-15, [Ez 36:25]/Mt 22:1-14 Friday: Rv 21:9b-14/Ps 145:10-11, 12-13, [12]/Jn 1:45-51 Saturday: Ez 43:1-7ab/Ps 85:9ab and 10, 11-12, [cf. 10b]/Mt 23:1-12 Next Sunday: Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b/Ps 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21, [9a]/Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32/Jn 6:60-69 GREAT PEOPLE = GREAT PARISH
