JESUS IS THE LIFE RAFT In a recent Gospel reading at Mass, we were told that many of Jesus disciples were abandoning him. He asked the Twelve Apostles if they were going to leave too. Peter responds, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. As the editor of America Magazine wrote last week, for those of us who choose to stay in the Church, Peter s words are the life raft we cling to amid the wreckage of the American church. But Peter s story doesn t end there. You know it well: Peter abandons Jesus, denying him three times. Yet after the resurrection, Jesus comes back for Peter, asking him three times, Do you love me? When Peter says yes, Jesus replies: Feed my sheep. The summer of 2018 is not the first time that our faith has been tested. It will probably not be the last time, either. But, writes Father Matt Malone, SJ, the Gospel tells us that even when the church fails to be faithful to God, God never ceases to be faithful to us. God is loving us even now. The pain of abuse and betrayal is real, but so is the healing power of love and reconciliation. Jesus Christ still lives. Thus faith, hope and love will never die. CONTEXT & PERSPECTIVE SORELY NEEDED I think the average person on the street thinks clergy sex abuse is rampant today in 2018, when it s not, said Santa Clara University psychologist Dr. Thomas G. Plante. Adding that annual data collections, independent audits, safe environment training, and zerotolerance policies have proven effective. A prolific author who also serves on Stanford University s faculty, Dr. Plante has spent more than 30 years researching and treating psychological issues among Catholic clergy and laypersons. Although ongoing vigilance is required, Plante is hopeful about the Catholic Church s ongoing prospects for protecting youth from clerical sexual abuse. I think we are using best practices now, he said. Sadly, we can t change what happened 30, 40, 50 years ago, and we treat those victims with great compassion and respect. But thankfully for everybody, today s church is very different from yesterday s church, says Dr. Thomas G. Plante. While this information is helpful, and provides much needed context & perspective, let us keep anyone who has been harmed by any representative of the Church in our prayers. And may we all get the word out that if anyone has been harmed, the Church stands ready to help victims get the help needed in order to bring them healing. WHAT'S SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE WE CAN DO? I invite you to do what I've started to do every time I hear bad news about the Church or some priest who in the past abused someone. I say a "Hail Mary." By doing so, I'm putting all of this in the hands of the Blessed Mother. She is the Mother of the Church; that is, the loving Mother of each one of us who "never was it known that anyone who fled to her protect, implored her assistance was left unaided." Moreover, as St John Paul II said of the Blessed Virgin, "from Mary, we learn to surrender to God's Will in all things. From Mary, we learn to trust even when all hope seems gone. From Mary, we learn to love Christ her Son and the Son of God!" By saying the "Hail Mary," we implore her help during this very trying time for the Church. ~ Father Devlin GREAT PEOPLE = GREAT PARISH OLP-PARISH.COM 3-109
