I'm told Father Dan was a much loved assistant pastor at ND back in the day. It's always nice to hear good things about a brother priest who obviously lived the gift of his priesthood with great fidelity and generosity of spirit. As Christians, when we are confronted by the harsh reality of death, we do not see only a hopeless abyss, but we gaze upon Christ's victory. A life of faith well lived, assures us a share in that victory over sin and death. We trust that Father Dan Cavanaugh and all our beloved deceased are now sharing in that victory and are living in eternity with the Lord. May Father Dan and all our Beloved deceased Rest in Peace! Amen. CHRISTMAS IS COMING Hard to believe another year is almost over and that "Christmas is right around the corner" as the saying goes. Our dedicated and generous Christmas Bazaar planning committee - under the leadership of Deacon John Ellis and Mrs. Donna Lane - have been hard at it for months now. OLP's Christmas Bazaar will be held on Friday evening (6:00 PM - 9:00 PM) on November 16 th and Saturday, November 17 th (9:00 AM - 3:00 PM). Mrs Irene Sakowski will be speaking at the Masses next weekend, October 20 th & 21 st, on behalf of the Bazaar planning committee next weekend. We're in need of several items (please see the Christmas Bazaar section for the donation list). Thank you in advance for your generous support through your donations and by attending the Christmas Bazaar. ~ Father Devlin GREAT PEOPLE = GREAT PARISH OLP-PARISH.COM 3-109

4 The success of the parish Carnival was not attributable to just one person, but to the hard work and generosity of the many participants on the Carnival committee, volunteers who worked at the carnival, and those who attended and supported our efforts for Notre Dame de Lourdes School. After a rainy start on Thursday evening, we did manage to have 2 very profitable nights on Friday and Saturday, capped off by the Pig Roast on Saturday evening. The net profit was just under $11,000. Special thanks are due to Mary DiRomualdo, who has decided to step down after many years of running the kitchen. Her unselfish contributions and skill in planning the menus and providing delicious meals for our enjoyment will be missed. Other major contributors include Barb Hoyer, who set up the advertisements for the carnival on the school and parish websites, managed the sign-up genie for volunteers, prepared signs for the different booths, and handled the cash register every night in the food court; Jon Freeman and the Home and School Association, who operated a booth; Rose Moran, who prepared the inserts for the parish bulletin, prepared the cole slaw and baked beans for the Pig Roast, and donated toys for the booths; Mike and MaryBeth Kusner, who solicited and set up the prize baskets which were chanced off during the carnival, handled the grill (Mike) and in general worked every night to make the carnival a success; John Cepis, who donated so freely of his time and talent to keep the kitchen operational and moved supplies and equipment from one site to the other; Andrew Caponi and his friends who cleaned up every night; Rich McKinney, Dan, Nancy and Joey Tyson and Greg Hoyer who worked tirelessly every night of the carnival to keep things moving; and Donna Lane and Cookie Devlin, the ever-present 50/50 ladies, who also worked every night in their familiar roles. Finally, I want to give a special thanks to Jake Saunders who arranged to have the students from the Let There Be Rock school play for our enjoyment on Friday and Saturday nights. Many other generous volunteers also contributed significantly to the carnival s success, and I apologize if I have omitted anyone. However, none of this would have come about without the support of our pastor, and the school s principal, Dianna Pileggi and her staff. I appreciate their faith in the committee to pull this off and to adjust their schedules to accommodate the disruption of the carnival. ~ Pat Gorman GREAT PEOPLE = GREAT PARISH OLP-PARISH.COM 4-109

5 SUNDAY REFLECTION Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Do you remember Walter Mitty? He is that fictional character in James Thurber s short story The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, first published in The New Yorker on March 18, The story was made into a movie in 1947 starring Danny Kaye, with a remake starring Ben Stiller in Mitty is a daydreamer. He can in turn imagine himself as a wartime pilot, an ER surgeon, and a devil-may-care killer. There is something of Mitty in each of us, especially when we watch the TV game show winner snatch the jackpot prize. Or watch those news reports of the latest lottery winner. If only it were me! What I could do with that money! That last is the key word: money. A wag once opined that Money isn t everything but it s way ahead of whatever is in second place! In a materialistic culture like ours, it s so easy to forget and sideline the ideal set forth by Jesus. We re in good company, you might think, as you consider that even St. Peter, our first pope, wanted to know from Jesus exactly what he and the other Apostles would get out of their having given up everything and followed you. Jesus then promises a hundredfold of good things that Peter lists. Note too that Jesus also promises persecution. Some of that will inevitably follow someone who contradicts the prevailing earthbound philosophy of wealth. In this matter, we have to remember that St. Paul wrote in his letter to Timothy that the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself. (I Timothy 6:10) Money is really just a medium of exchange, and is necessary for us to acquire and maintain our needs for food, clothing and shelter. It s when money turns into a status symbol; or as the source of power selfishly-wielded; or as influence that erects a high wall between us and them that sin enters the picture. Certainly there is great good that generous philanthropy practiced by wealthy people does. Funds and foundations set up by individuals and/or families support all sorts of good causes that make life better dare I say richer? for all of us. As a counterbalance to the rich young man of the gospel, we learn of King Solomon, who deemed riches nothing in comparison with her (Wisdom). There will always be good examples of wise people who never daydream selfishly but take their good fortune in life as a gift to be shared. Although Walter Mitty s story has its humorous elements, there is a darker and more significant message underlying the text, leading to a more tragic interpretation of the character. Even in his heroic daydreams, Mitty does not triumph, several fantasies being interrupted before the final one sees Mitty dying bravely in front of a firing squad. In the brief snatches of reality that punctuate Mitty s fantasies the reader meets well-meaning but insensitive strangers who inadvertently rob Mitty of his remaining dignity. (Wikipedia) None of this means that daydreams are always and everywhere bad things. St. Ignatius daydreamed of himself being like saints Francis of Assisi and Anthony of Padua. He went on to found the Jesuits! There are hundreds of quips about riches. I like the following one because you have to think after you laugh. Once there was the guy who loved a girl so much that he worshiped the very ground her father discovered oil on!
