1 October 2012 Issue 9 Pastors Mary Ellen Sharp Josh Sabo Our Mission We exist as a church to love God, love people, and serve the world. We love God by placing a priority on public worship and spending intentional time with God on a daily basis. We love people by building redemptive relationships in group Bible study and with our neighbors. We serve the world in Christ's name by meeting the needs of people in our church, neighborhood, and world. Josh and I both thank you all for providing the position of Administrator for this season of our church. Dave Law has been a tremendous help to us. He has kept several projects moving along, kept in touch with vendors, and has dug into the tedious and somewhat overwhelming work of producing a budget. We have been blessed. Thank you for your generous gifts to families within the church and to others through your gifts to the fellowship fund. In some cases you have given directly for a known need but in most cases you have given anonymously through the fellowship fund. Recently gifts to the fellowship fund have helped members with prescription drugs, have purchased bus passes and bus tokens for those needing transportation assistance. You have also helped families keep food on Thank you to each of you who saw a need and stepped up and quietly took care of it. Some may have simply wiped up some crumbs or a spill or left an area cleaner than it was when they found it. Thank you. Some may have noticed a weed in the garden area or a plant in need of a drink and taken care of it. Thank you. Some may have been aware of someone in need of a visit or encouragement and picked up the phone and or gone to visit in person. Thank you. Some may have noticed someone missing in Sunday School or Worship and picked up the phone to make sure all was well. Thank you. To the Pastoral Exploration team, thank you for your time, your energy, your prayers, your thoughtful discussion as you seek God s direction for pastoral leadership in the church for our next season together. Finally, thank you to all who have and continue to be a part of my daughter Emily s spiritual journey. She has experienced the grace, the love, the generosity of our great God through you. We rejoice that she has committed her life to following Jesus Christ and look forward to celebrating that through baptism in the near future. Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Philippians 1:3 (NLT) Together in Christ, Mary Ellen

This is an important time in the life of Central as we seek God s will. An important topic will be the 2013 Budget. Your prayers, attendance and participation are coveted. Financials Year To Date: Actual Budget Local Op $265,986 $451,838 Missions $ 44,093 $ 72,425 Financials August Giving: Local Op $ 27,851 Missions $ 5,346 If your group will be using the church for a meeting, please notify the church office in advance for scheduling purposes. This helps staff know who is in the building in the event of an emergency. Just A Thought... Prayer is not a "spare wheel" that you pull out when in trouble, but it is a "steering wheel" that directs the right path throughout. Rev. Bernauer Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Ordination This month Selden Bernauer is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination. The ordination was held at First Baptist Church in Antigo, Wisconsin on October 7, We will honor Selden during the 8:30 a.m. worship service on October 7 and at a reception in Weber Lounge following the service. Selden pastored churches in Wisconsin and also in Mahomet, Carrolton and Lincoln, Illinois Our organist extraordinaire is a very interesting man. Selden holds a degree in Electrical Engineering. After returning from Korea, Selden felt a calling to the ministry and attended Northern Baptist Seminary. During that time he also pursued a minor in music specializing in pipe organ. While attending seminary, Selden was asked to serve as the organist/accompanist for the National Baptist Convention held in Detroit. While in Wisconsin, Selden began playing for a Men s Retreat at Green Lake and continued to do so for 10 years. After retirement from the ministry, Selden served as interim pastor and substitute organist for a short time. One of the fill-in positions was Elliott Avenue, where he served for 7 years. While he was at Elliott, Selden celebrated his 25th Ordination Anniversary. Twelve years ago, Central had need for an organist. The rest is history and we are blessed by his gift. In Christian Love and Sympathy I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." John 11:25-26 (NIV) Please remember these brothers and sisters in Christ: Dick Yeates and family upon the death of his wife, Loretta Yeates Josh Sabo upon the death of his grandfather, Joseph Sabo Julie Miller and family upon the death of her brother-in-law, Josh Baker

3 Page 3 Central Baptist News October 2012 Beyond Our Doors Isaiah 58:10 reminds us "... and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday" Kumler Food Pantry: Any nonperishable food item is needed by Kumler. Drop-off in the Serve the World Center. Contact Ministries: Donations of men s casual work clothes, shoes/boots are needed by Contact Ministries. You may leave your donations in the Serve the World Center or at Contact Ministries on 1100 E. Adams Street. Do You Hear the Call? Part of what it means to be a follower of Christ is to share the good news of Jesus not only in our neighborhood but also around the world. Each year, the World Mission Offering (WMO) provides an opportunity to understand what is happening worldwide through International Ministries (IM) and to support those important mission efforts. During the month of September, we want to encourage you to participate with us in the beautiful work God is doing throughout the world! We will celebrate how our WMO gifts make possible the ministries of 100 long-term IM missionaries and more than 1,800 short-term missionaries and volunteers. They, along with 225 partner organizations, work in more than 70 countries to: evangelize teach lead in economic development prepare church leaders promote physical and emotional healing seek peace and offer refuge confront human trafficking We are grateful to God for the opportunity we have to support through prayer and financial support those who are demonstrating and sharing the good news of Jesus throughout the world. Please prayerfully consider how God might want you to be a part of this great work. Your partner in mission, Josh Donation envelop has been included for your convenience. Make checks payable to Central Baptist Church and put WMO in the memo space.

4 Page 4 Central Baptist News October 2012 Thank You! Thank you very much for the generous scholarship you awarded me. Central has been and continues to such a tremendous blessing in my life and I am so grateful. This year I am using this scholarship money to pay for my piano lessons through Notre Dame and I am very excited! Thank you to all who made this possible. Rikki Koebler Thank you all Contact Ministry Food Volunteers! Everyone was so wonderful to step up and help with our commitment to provide meals for Contact Ministries on Wednesday nights during the summer months. All of you were a blessing to me as well as all those grateful homeless women and their children. We also provided meals to Helping Hands on occasion which is the homeless men s shelter. People there are just so grateful for these kindnesses that as usual, the blessing is ours. I am most grateful to the following classes, individuals and families: Dixie Dalbey, Marge Clinton, Brenda Thornburgh, Keep It Alive Class and Nancy Langford, Life Matters Sunday School Class and Mary Coleman, Tuesday Lunch Bible Study, Lucia Hill, Judith Anderson, Builder's Class and Sue Filler, Sharon Farrow, Doby Class and Phyllis Hudspeth, Hannah and Dick McDaniel, and Sharon and Bill Smith. Carol Volle News from the Pews Amberlee Southwell and Isaac Alt ran a lemonade stand during their neighborhood garage sale a few weeks ago. They gave their proceeds to Central Illinois Foodbank. Sally Smith has been training for a marathon in San Francisco. Her problem has been finding hills in Illinois! Dave and Carol Matheson have returned to their volunteer mission work serving in Bluefields Nicaragua and Costa Rica. November 3rd noon to 5 pm Holiday Shopping!! Vendor / Crafters will be set-up in Merriam Hall to sell their arts and crafts to the community. Perfect time to get that unique gift for someone. If you are a vendors/crafter and are interested in setting up a table, please contact Tricia Allen at or Tricia@cbcchurchfamily.org for more information. News from the Pews features neighbor to neighbor news. Share your news! Submit news to the church office or September Mystery Member No one was able to guess this mystery man! Everyone was stumped by September s mystery man, Rex Medley. He and his wife, Lowanda, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They are the parents of two children and have four grandchildren. Rex was born in Arkansas, one of thirteen children. His father farmed and he helped him plow and plant using a mule. He had a horse named Shakespeare. He made his profession of faith at a Baptist revival meeting at the age of fifteen. Rex was drafted into the military and is a veteran of the Korean War. While in Korea, he helped build a church for Korean Christians using brick from a bombed out warehouse. One of his favorite songs is O Holy Night. While in Korea on Christmas Eve, a Chaplain and his driver were passing by and the driver was singing the familiar song. Rex is very fond of many types of music including: symphony, Christian, big band, blue grass and musical theatre. He has always enjoyed dancing, especially the jitterbug. Fishing is also some of which he is quite found. He once caught a 6 3/4# large mouth bass. Rex is member of the Builders Sunday School Class. He has faithfully served Central Baptist for many years. His favorite scripture is I Corinthians 13.

5 Page 5 Central Baptist News October 2012 Do You Know Me? Here are the clues: I grew up and went to school in Springfield. I graduated from Springfield High School. I was baptized at Central Baptist Church and still attend here. I am a graduate of UIS with a degree in Business Administration. I love couponing and finding a "good deal." I love outdoor activities and recently learned to play golf. My favorite hymn is "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing." I usually can be found attending the second service on Sunday. Do you know who this is? Send your answer to: Maryellen@cbcchurchfamily.org or call the church at ext 16 and leave a message in her voice mail. The winner receives a free Wednesday Night Dinner. Think! Good clues You even know which service this person attends. It s Not Too Early... The Feast of Plenty will be here before you realize...52 days from October 1st. This event is eagerly anticipated by many in our community. Matter of fact, the church office received a reservation call in August! The clothing donations this year are adult socks and scarves, hats, and gloves for men and women. Largesize gloves for men is a significant need. Each of you play a significant role. Your prayer support, financial gifts, donations of desserts, cooking, preparing the delivery meals, working the serving line, greeting our visitors, delivering meals, answering the phones in the days preceding the event are invaluable. You may never know the impact of your warm hand and welcoming smile to those that rarely experience those gestures of kindness. Sign-up sheets will be available beginning October 14th. Meal delivery will run from 10:30 am until noon. The serving line will open at noon. Tip of the Halo Carol Matheson for stepping in to coordinate the bereavement meal and all those volunteering to provide food and serve. Tom Langford and Larry Aldag for reseeding and watering the lifeless patches of grass.

From Our ConnectEDPAIRS Counselor! Stephani Cave, LCPC Phone: X 19 or Stephani@cbcchurchfamily.org Happy Fall! As the weather turns cooler, we want to make sure our feelings toward our partner are not turning cold. To keep our feelings warm, we may need to untangle some Love Knots. Love Knots are hidden expectations and assumptions or beliefs that we bring to intimate relationships. They are typically subconscious, vague rules or attitudes about love, relationships, marriage, families, or about what we can and cannot talk about, that we keep hidden not only from our partners, but generally from ourselves. When these hidden expectations are not met, we feel justified in our reaction of rejecting or punishing our partner for not meeting our hidden, and sometimes unrealistic, expectations. In her book, If You REALLY Loved Me : Identifying and Untangling Love Knots in Intimate Relationships, PAIRS (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills) program developer Lori H. Gordon, PhD, explains how love knots develop and demonstrates how to untangle them using unknotted attitudes and simple, non-blaming skills. If you find yourself saying or having thoughts such as, If you really loved me, you would (would not), then you may have some hidden expectations causing love knots in your relationship. For example, If you really loved me, you would know what I want, and you would do it. Stop by the counseling office to see the Hidden Expectations Checklist to discover some of your own hidden expectations. To learn more about love knots, or to learn the skills to untangle them, please schedule a counseling appointment, or attend one of the upcoming ConnectEdPAIRS Fall workshops. More information can be found by stopping by the counseling office on the lower level, calling me at , picking up a ConnectEdPAIRS brochure in the Welcome Center, or by visiting ~Stephani A pastor s wife was preparing pancakes for her young sons. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their Mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait. The oldest boy turned to his younger brother an said, You be Jesus.

7 Page 7 Central Baptist News October 2012 Off The Shelf Stories From Hope Haven: 16 books of Fiction from Guideposts The people of Hope Haven Hospital provide health-care support the way it is meant to be: top notch, kind, loving, and complemented by friendship and God s fellowship. Come live, love, pray; and hope with these amazing nurses as they face life-and-death challenges and stand in wonderment at the healing power of God s grace. These books were donated by Carolyn Ferrel. They may be found on top of the New Book rack in the Library. There are checklists near these books to help you keep a record of the books you have read. Undaunted by Josh McDowell Josh McDowell would become one of the world s most well known evangelists. But his story begins with a young boy on a farm... one who didn t believe in God. There s a saying that childhood is the most beautiful of life s seasons. And so it should be. But that wasn t true for Josh McDowell. He was born to an alcoholic father who showed him no love, who valued him only as a farmhand. He endured years of painful abuse. Josh s mother loved him but was unable to rescue him. In the midst of circumstances no child should have to suffer, Josh cried out to God for help, but He seemed silent. And so Josh believed God wasn t listening or even there at all. This is Josh McDowell s story. For the first time, Josh fully reveals the dramatic spiritual transformation that occurred when he faced his past head-on and put everything entirely in God s hands. It s a story of overcoming shame, grief, and despair and embracing real love for the first time. It s a tale of divine grace: when the worst that life can throw at you happens, you can come out on the other side with a faith that is full, free and undaunted. This book may be found on the New Book rack in the Library. Jim Filler On behalf of the Library Team Children s House Along with field trips, chapel and all of the activities the teachers have planned, our center activities for October at Children s House include Square 1 Art, Professional Development Day, a Happy Feet demonstration and a Halloween parade and parties. We are excited to do the Square 1 Art fundraiser again this year. The children will be working on their art work to turn in to Square 1 Art the first 2 weeks of October. The products with their personalized art work will be on sale soon after. The finished products will be back in plenty of time for Christmas gifts. Sunday school children, grand children, nieces and nephews of church members are also welcome to turn in their artwork. The special paper for their art will be available in the Children s House office. Don t miss out on your chance to get an item imprinted with these great works of art by our young artists. The Happy Feet organization will be coming on Oct. 15 for the 2 s and Oct. 16 for the 3 s and 4 s to do a free demonstration of their child fitness soccer program. The Happy Feet instructors use age-appropriate stories, the soccer balls, songs, nursery rhymes and fun games in their classes. Oct. 8 is Professional Development Day. The teachers will be attending training so children will not be here that day. We have received our self study manual for accreditation and will be starting on our journey towards national accreditation. Our Halloween parade and activities will be Wednesday, October 31 at 3:00 PM. This year will be the 1st time that any church members who might be here for Wed. Night Dinner will also be able to participate. The children will have a parade around the church if the weather is nice. If the weather does not cooperate they will parade in Merriam Hall and the 1st floor of the daycare and church offices before going back to their rooms for more activities and treats. Join in the fun! Have your bag of candy and cameras ready or just come to watch for the little ones as they go by. You won t be disappointed. They are just too cute!
