This event will allow families to experience the events of Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter morning, and more through activities and discussions designed to captivate kids, engage their emotions, and help them grow in their relationship with Jesus in powerful ways. All ages-- babies to grandparents-- are encouraged to join us to kick off a memorable, faith-filled Easter season! For more information contact Dulci Harms ( ). The Public Health Department has asked that the kitchen s peeling paint and caulk around the dishwasher and hand sink be fixed. They will re-inspect just before Easter! What a perfect opportunity to clean and repaint the whole kitchen. Painting is scheduled on Saturday, March 10 with a start time of 8 a.m. There are many things that must be done prior to painting. Things like: ceiling and walls scrubbed to remove greasy dirt peeling paint scraped holes patched a thorough cleaning of shelves, cabinets, etc. Junk and unusable items discarded Many hands will lighten the load and some work has already begun! Gather some friends, adopt a wall or other task! The kitchen is available after 2pm during the week, except for Wednesdays. Contact: Brett Miles ( ).

2 The Story Our lives are richer because of the relationships we share with the people around us. This truth is not profound or foreign to any of us. We have all experienced and been blessed by relationships. As we think of particular friends and family, it takes little time for a flood of memories to come to mind. The people in our lives have contributed to the shape of our lives in significant ways. In John 13:34-35, Jesus teaches his disciples saying Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. I had the privilege of participating in the Appreciative Inquiry process last year and as a part of that process I got to spend time with a few members of the church and hear about ways that God has worked in their lives. I also got to listen as other members of the team shared stories that members of Central told them. One of the things that struck me as powerful was the number of similar stories we heard about how people s lives were changed as a result of other members of Central loving them. In times of need, people talked about how their Sunday School class or Small Group rallied around them and cared for them. Others talked about joyous times that were made even more joyful by the fact they were shared with friends who are a part of their lives through Central. In hearing these stories and quotes like I don t know how we would have made it without the support of our Sunday School class, I m moved by the beautiful picture of community that many experience at Central. This should be celebrated because as you gather with your Sunday School class and Small Group and love each other as God loves you, you are experiencing the Kingdom of God! You are catching a glimpse of things as God intends them to be. Though we know that we re not perfect, this experience in community helps us to grow closer to God. My hope is that we ll recognize that this gift of community that we ve been given is also a gift that we are to share. In his book Right Here, Right Now, Alan Hirsch says Christians should know how to be the best friends a person can have, because friendship lies at the heart of the biblical (Great) commission. If we are to make disciples, we need to consider how we can invite others to be a part of these communities that mean so much to us and enrich our lives in so many ways. If we have something this beautiful, how can we not share it? Josh February s Mystery Member The February Mystery Member was Edna Walden. Edna and her husband, Ruffin live in Springfield. She is a retired elementary school teacher and also served as an Assistant to former Governor Jim Edgar. She and her husband love to travel and do so depending on Ruffin s schedule as he has his own Physical Therapy business. Their 4 children are grown and no longer at home. Edna serves as a volunteer receptionist here at the church on Tuesday afternoons. She and Ruffin are members of the Doby Class. And the Winner is.. 4 people correctly identified Edna as the Mystery Member. Marge Clinton is the winner of the free Wednesday Night Dinner. Easter Flowers... Easter flowers will be available for purchase soon. Watch your church bulletin for ordering details. Page 2

Thanks! Thank You! From Ruth Roberts Thank you for all your prayers, flowers, phone calls and cards during my last hospital stay. I hope it is the last time for a long time. It was a great comfort to me for your kindnesses. Thank you. From Larry Aldag I do not know how I could make it through some of this life s challenges without the love & support of my family and my Christian family. I feel strongly about this statement and I would guess that you may have spoken the same words at times. THANK YOU for your cards, letters, food, words of encouragement and especially your prayers during my last few months. I truly love and appreciate both of my families and I feel very truly blessed to be able to walk again with two feet. I also praise & thank God for providing the knowledge & wisdom to our medical community that allows me to do so. Thank you for caring! From Judith Anderson Thank you to all of you who contributed to Souper/Super Bowl Sunday. It was an excellent response and helped with Kumler Food Pantry's growing needs. Thank you, too, to Paul and Judy Thompson for delivering and JR Heikes for helping them load the items. From Jennie Alt John and I would like to thank everyone who offered support during my recovery from surgery. All prayers, food, gifts, babysitting, and phone calls of support were appreciated more than we can express. We love CBC and the congregation. Thanks for Everything! From Member Care area leaders thanks to Sharon Smith for coordinating all aspects of the Birthday Bash held on February 24. We enjoyed some really good food, conversation around the table, and we enjoyed much laughter and some very touching moments made possible by God's creative gifts shared by our brothers and sisters in Christ. Excerpt of letter from Taku & Katie Longkumer, ortheast India...We are so blessed that we ve been able to make the trips to these remote locations in the new vehicle that we were able to purchase through your generous donations. Each day as we climb into this amazing vehicle we remember you, giving thanks for the privilege to be able to move so freely to do the work God has called us to here. This vehicle seats 7 people so we can transport teams when they come to work with us. Perhaps some of you may be on one of those teams in the future!... Page 3

4 Do You Know Me? 1. I was born in Springfield, Illinois 2. My spouse and I were high school sweethearts. 3. I have 2 children 4. I was baptized as an infant in the Lutheran Church and immersed at Central Baptist as an adult. 5. I attended St. John s Lutheran Church as a child. 6. I graduated from Springfield High School. 7. I am involved in the CBC youth program 8. I have been a blood donor for several years, having one of the more rare types of blood. To date I have donated 12 gallons. Do you know who this is? Send your answer to: Maryellen@cbcchurchfamily.org or call the church at ext 16 and leave a message in her voice mail. The winner receives a free Wednesday Night Dinner From Our ConnectEdPAIRS Counselor! Hello, again! I enjoyed meeting new people at the services in Springfield on February 5, Thank you to everyone for helping me feel welcome. Thanks again to the AB Men of Central for allowing my family and me to interrupt their breakfast while we were in the building putting up wallpaper border in the counseling office. Feel free to stop by and see it! And thank you to Jan and the Wednesday night crew for my to-go meals. This month, I would like to focus on stress management. Margaret Wehrenberg, PsyD, offers Stress Solutions: Ten Effective Strategies to Eliminate your Stress. Her strategies are breathing, physical relaxation, assertiveness, creating quiet zones, using waiting time to your advantage, changing your point of view, eating correctly, exercising for both stress relief and prevention, reducing inner stress, and lightening your mood. If you are interested in mastering greater control over the stress in your life, please schedule an appointment with me to review these strategies in detail. We could start 10 weekly sessions for you to work through the exercises and master the strategies in this workbook. A great way to reduce stress is reading for pleasure. March 2 nd is Dr. Seuss s birthday. For this month s reading suggestion, I offer his final book, Oh, The Places You ll Go! (1990). This is a light, easy, fun read to reduce stress. The illustrations help reduce visual monotony, as suggested by Dr. Wehrenberg s strategy six. I love the metaphors that are in this book and fear most of them are lost on younger readers. The book is a good reminder that life will have its ups and downs, and that is to be expected. My favorite metaphor is that of the Waiting Place. Instead of just waiting, Dr. Seuss reminds us that there is life to be lived, and highlights Dr. Wehrenberg s fifth strategy of using waiting time to our advantage. Please take time to read this children s book with adult eyes, an adult appreciation for the metaphors, and inspiration for making positive, lasting changes in your life. I love this book and would be happy to discuss the metaphors with you! The James Project has partnered with Cherry Hills Baptist Church to develop a home and support for foster care children in Sangamon County. We can help! When children are picked up and placed in foster care they rarely come with anything other than the clothes on their backs. Closet 127 will coordinate clothing and other essentials for these children. They have a great need for children s underwear for boys and girls, from newly trained to teens. Socks are needed too. On these two Sundays in April we will collect your donation of underwear and socks for this mission. Visit the Archives Bulletin Board on the lower level. 6 Off The Shelf Courageous: A ovel by Randy Alcorn From the creators of Flywheel, Facing the Giants and Fireproof comes an inspiring new story about everyday heroes who long to be the kinds of dads that make a lifelong impact on their children. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they re quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift farther and farther away from them. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those who are most dear to them? When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God... and to their children? This book may be found on the New Book Section of the Library. Movie: Believe In Me on DVD This film involves a fact-based tale about a 1960s-era girl's basketball coach who inspired his athletes to believe in themselves and always strive to reach their greatest potential. Clayton Driscoll was an assistant boy's basketball coach when he accepted his first official coaching assignment in the tiny, backwater Oklahoma town of Middleton. Upon discovering that the team he is set to coach is a girl's team, however, Clayton's enthusiasm immediately sours. In the mid 1960s, in the middle of nowhere, girl's athletics could barely qualify as an afterthought to sports fans. The Middleton Lady Cyclones in particular, were an unmitigated laughing stock. Though Clayton is at first flushed by the ineptitude of his young players, his doubts are soon tempered by the remarkable character displayed by the girls who want nothing more than to shine in the eyes of their coach. Upon recognizing the decency and resiliency displayed by his tough-minded team, Clayton gives the girls permission to become as passionate about the game as any boy would be. But not everyone in Middleton is so eager to see these young women behaving as aggressively and competitively as their male counterparts, Town rainmaker Ellis Brawley launches a bitter campaign to bring about the progressiveminded coach's downfall. This DVD may be found in the Video Section near the Librarian s Desk. Jim Filler On Behalf of the Library Team Children s House A Quality Counts grant proposal was submitted in February, for the purpose of rehabbing the playroom, the 3 s and toddler rooms. Those results should be available by March 15. Children s House is working through the logistics of opening another classroom for older 2 year old children. This addition will add the potential for more children, revenue and employees. Older infants would be able to move earlier to the toddler room; older toddlers will be able to move into a young 2 s setting and older 2 s will be in a preschool transition room. Spring brings several events to Children s House. During March CH staff will have a Professional Development day; the children will have IdentiKid pictures. Following that a variety of activities take place... Easter parties, Easter egg hunts, Teacher Appreciation Week, Child Abuse Prevention Month (the Rainbows will again be singing at the kickoff news conference and ceremony) and Week of the Young Child just to name a few.
