1 November 2012 Issue 10 Pastors Mary Ellen Sharp Josh Sabo Central Baptist News Our Mission We exist as a church to love God, love people, and serve the world. We love God by placing a priority on public worship and spending intentional time with God on a daily basis. We love people by building redemptive relationships in group Bible study and with our neighbors. We serve the world in Christ's name by meeting the needs of people in our church, neighborhood, and world. Worship 501 S 4th St - Springfield 8:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. 600 W Birch - New Berlin 10:30 a.m. Office Hours Monday through Friday 8 a.m. 5 p.m. Phone office@cbcchurchfamily.org Website Children s House Phone rita@cbcchurchfamily.org Website Up Front Seems hard to believe that November is upon us and the holiday season is mere days away! Fall is in full effect all around us and winter promises to be not far behind. Months have a way of sneaking past us but Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and the festivities that accompany this season bring with them a feeling that is extraordinary. As the holiday season approaches, I would like to highlight a few ways God is at work in our midst. In mid-october, we were privileged to partner with our friends at Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Family Services Center to start a new Graham elementary after school site for the Compass program. Through Compass, God uses us to feed hungry children a well-balanced meal each week, help with homework, teach basic life skills, and let children know they are loved by us and an incredible God! Preparations for Feast of Plenty are all coming together to provide a Thanksgiving Day meal for anyone in Springfield who has need. Through this event and your support of volunteer time and financial gifts, God will use us to feed hundreds of people as we demonstrate his love in this very tangible way. Our Advent Conspiracy focus this year will be on a Habitat for Humanity home that is being built just a mile from Central in the Enos Park neighborhood in Springfield. God will use our sacrifices and gifts during the Christmas season to pay for the roof of the home that will provide comfort and shelter for two families! As we have talked together during The Present Future series, I sense that God is helping us to develop a well-rounded missional imagination. As I have learned of the ways you are serving others through time and energy given to community service organizations, caring for girl scouts and their families, organizing a Trunk or Treat event, and spending time with co-workers and friends I am blessed to see that God is at work. In Time Change Sunday, November 4 each of these environments, he is using Central to demonstrate the greatness of his kingdom. The Message paraphrase of John 1:14 says, The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. I believe this verse calls us as a church to live in our neighborhood in such a way that people can experience the love of our God who is with us. We are also reminded that wherever we go, the fact that our God is with us means we have the opportunity to demonstrate that the kingdom of God is near as we Love God, Love People, and Serve the World. Take joy with me in this season, that the God who is with us is at work in our midst in powerful and beautiful ways! Your Partner in Mission, Josh

Kind words are short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. -Mother Teresa Pastoral Exploration Team Update: Following the retirement of Sr. Pastor Reg Mills in May, the Pastoral Exploration Team was formed to consider future leadership options and then make a recommendation to the congregation regarding the future direction of the ministry leadership at Central. The team has met five times since June. After guidance from the Great Rivers Region Office regarding how to proceed, the team explored numerous leadership options. They met with Mary Ellen Sharp and Josh Sabo to discuss their current roles. Both thought the copastoring arrangement was currently working well. The team agreed to make no recommendation to the congregation until early 2013, to allow time for the church community to read the book entitled The Present Future and/or view the videos by Reggie McNeal. The team has identified some prayer concerns that they are asking be included in our private prayer life, during Sunday School classes and/or discussion groups: Pray that God s will for the leadership of our church will be made known Pray that each of us will be convicted about our role in bringing Gold s kingdom to earth Pray that Josh and Mary Ellen will lead with boldness and conviction Pray that we as a church will radiate the love of God and that we will literally become the hands and feet of Jesus September Financial Summary: Local Operating Total income $55,356 Total expense $39,423 Children s House Total income $47,380 Total expense $49,576 Benevolence Total income $6,855 Total expense $6,026 Annual Business Meeting The congregation approved the 2013 budget at the Annual Meeting, October 17, Copies of the proposed budget are available in the Business Office. Van Drivers Needed to transport individuals and families that would like to attend Central. You need to have a good driving record and you must be listed on the church insurance policy. Those volunteering would serve on a rotational basis. If you would like to be part of this ministry, contact Larry Aldag for additional information. In Christian Love and Sympathy I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." John 11:25-26 (NIV) Please remember these brothers and sisters in Christ: Family and friends of Lorraine Lewis upon her death. Beyond Our Doors Isaiah 58:10 reminds us "... and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday" Kumler Food Pantry: Any non-perishable food item is needed by Kumler. Drop-off in the Serve the World Center. Contact Ministries: Donations of men s casual work clothes, shoes/ boots are needed by Contact Ministries. You may leave your donations in the Serve the World Center or at Contact Ministries on 1100 E. Adams Street.

New ideas are always welcome! We will collect these items throughout the month of November and assemble the bags the first week of December for delivery. If you wish to help assemble the bags or help with delivery please contact: Jennifer Logan at Advent Conspiracy 2012 Focus We are excited to participate as a church again this year in Advent Conspiracy! In the midst of a season that can become full of distractions, we will worship fully, spend less, give more, and love all as a testimony to the love of a God who is with us. Over the past few years we have been blessed to be able to participate in projects in Thailand and Haiti to bring clean water to people who did not have access to clean water. We have chosen to spend less on gifts for others and have given more of ourselves as a gift to those we love. We have loved all by supporting projects that demonstrate to those that live without clean water that God is with them too. John 1:14 says, The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood" (MSG). During Christmas, we celebrate the beautiful truth that God has come to us, pursued us, and moved into our neighborhood. During Advent Conspiracy this year, we are turning our focus to our neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity has begun construction on a two-story townhouse for two families in the Enos Park neighborhood, just a mile away from Central in Springfield. We are going to celebrate God moving into our neighborhood by helping to build a house in our neighborhood for two families! We are setting the goal during Advent Conspiracy to collect $3,000 to pay for the roof of the home. Our youth and families will help work on the house on Saturday, November 3rd. Please prayerfully consider participating with us in this project. 2012

From Our ConnectEDPAIRS Counselor! Stephani Cave, LCPC Phone: X 19 or Stephani@cbcchurchfamily.org Happy Veterans Day! My sincerest gratitude to all veterans and active military personnel. As we enter into November with Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day, let s not forget to also show our gratitude for our relationships. Take time to thank your mate for all that he or she does. We usually remember to show appreciation for the big things, so spend some time this month showing appreciation for all the little, everyday things that may be taken for granted (remembering trash day, giving the children baths, mowing the lawn, doing the grocery shopping). Also, consider any difficulties your mate might be going through while still attending to these everyday matters and ask how you can help. John Gottman has researched the couple relationship extensively. Feel free to contact me for a copy of one of his worksheets to jumpstart your thinking on showing gratitude to your mate. The counseling office is located on the lower level next to the elevator. If you prefer, you can call me at , or me at stephani@cbcchurchfamily.org. Relationships, like vehicles, need ongoing care, as well as preventive maintenance. For more information on the ongoing care of your relationship, please visit the ConnectEdPAIRS website at After taking a short Relationship Maintenance Survey to receive information about your relationship, your name and address will be submitted to receive a link to download a FREE e-book about relationships, Creating We Couples. ~Stephani A pastor s wife was preparing pancakes for her young sons. The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake. Their Mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say Let my brother have the first pancake. I can wait. The oldest boy turned to his younger brother an said, You be Jesus.

7 Page 7 Cent ral Baptist Ne ws No ve mber Off The Shelf Invitation: Billy Graham and the Lives God Touched This new book of images and stories brings together never-before published stories of real people who responded to God s invitation and as a result found their lives transformed and utterly turned around. Created by Billy Graham s grandsons, Basyle ( Boz ) and Aram Tchividjian, Invitation draws from a website designed to capture for all time the human impact of Graham s crusades. Here, the stories poured in, from young and old, near and far those who once were lonely, addicted, abandoned, sick, suicidal all sharing how one invitation changed everything. Designed around photographs, many never before seen, from the private Graham family collections and the archives of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Invitation is itself an invitation to all of us to experience the spiritual legacy of Billy Graham and the work of God in changing lives. This book may be found on the New Book Rack in the Library. Stories From Hope Haven: 16 books of Fiction from Guideposts Last month, the 16-volume Stories From Hope Haven were featured. These books need not be read in numerical order. They are located on top of the New Book Rack. Be sure to pick up a checklist so you can keep track of the books read. Feature-length Movies The August Off the Shelf announced a list of Veggie Tale DVD s available in the Library. This month, a list of DVD movies is available to help you find films for you and your family. The list of 125 films provides the title, year, rating (G, PG ), length, Amazon rating, and comments. Movies produced by Feature Films for Families are identified in the comment column. Both lists may be picked up from the literature rack at the Librarian s Desk. Jim Filler On behalf of the Volunteer Library Team Children s House Square 1 Art items will be for sale from the children or from the Children s House office from October 23 to November 2. The children each have their own art work featured on many different items. In addition to the children s artwork, there are 3 Children s House designs available. T-shirts, mugs, bags, and jewelry are some of the many items you can get with the Children s House design of your choice or your favorite young artist s design. Halloween celebrations are coming up soon. The children s parade will be at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 31. Come and join the fun. The children will have bags for candy and treats from those in attendance as they progress around the church. Thanksgiving festivities are on the way. November themes will be learning about fall, the thanksgiving holiday and for all that we give thanks. Everyone is already busy practicing for our annual Christmas program in December. It is time to work on a new Quality Counts grant proposal. This year we are going to ask for moneys to help with the playground renovations. This grant is not as large as the last one we applied for to renovate the playground but it will certainly be a nice sum to get the project going. Please pray that this is the year that our proposal is accepted. Rita McCarthy Children s House Director
