Central Baptist church MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH - APRIL 2016 Up Front Church Events April 8th - 9th The Sabo family is experiencing our first spring after moving into a new house. It has been fun to watch as different things have begun popping up throughout the yard. Everyday it seems like there are new surprises for us to discover as we walk around! Surprises some people love them and some not so much. I like them when they are good and don t appreciate them as much when they lean toward what I would consider negative. At the same time, I know that the unexpected is a natural part of life whether I welcome it or not. As a church family, we experience and navigate these surprises together as we seek to live in community and walk through life together. I love how Ephesians 3 describes God as the one who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine. Our God is a God of surprises and the season of Easter is a great time for us to be reminded of that. In the past month, we were surprised to learn that Dave will be retiring from his role as Business Administrator in late May. You can read the letter he wrote in this edition of the CBN and see why we are excited for what God has in store for him as he steps into a new season in his life. Dave has served the church so well and he has done much work to put systems in place that will continue to serve the church well even after he retires. We are going to miss him during the week and are incredibly grateful for all the he has contributed to Central. Mary Ellen and I are in the process of putting together a plan to make sure all that Dave currently cares for is covered after he retires. Another surprise that has come our way this year is the opportunity for a more significant partnership between Central and the Compass program. Compass is an after school program that serves low income students through school and church partnerships throughout our city. (continued on page 2.) 2 Off The Shelf APRIL ISSUE PAGE 2 Love Does by Bob Goff As a college student he spent 16 days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. As a father he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. He made friends in Uganda, and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan consul. He pursued his wife for three years before she agreed to date him. His grades weren't good enough to get into law school, so he sat on a bench outside the Dean s office for seven days until they finally let him enroll. Bob Goff has become something of a legend, and his friends consider him the world's best-kept secret. Those same friends have long insisted he write a book. What follows are paradigm shifts, musings, and stories from one of the world s most delightfully engaging and winsome people. What fuels his impact? Love. But it's not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings. Bob Goff is the founder of Restore International, a non-profit fighting injustices committed against children in Uganda and India. Bob shares leadership in a Washington law firm, Goff & DeWalt, and he serves as the Honorary Consul for the Republic of Uganda to the United States. He is adjunct professor at Pepperdine Law School and Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. This book may be found on the New Book Rack in the Library. (2012, 224 pages, 4.8 out of 5 Amazon rating) Jim Filler On behalf of the Volunteer Library Team Up Front (Continued) Compass staff is currently looking for a new home base and partner that will allow Compass to bless Springfield children for years to come and have approached Central about being that partner. LCT and our Finance and Outreach teams in particular have put significant work into exploring this opportunity and will be sharing more about that at our April 20th QBM. We will also ask you as a church to join the conversation. As we continue to move forward as a church, join me in praying that God will continue to lead us and guide us as we seek to be a source of hope in the center of Springfield and New Berlin as we connect people with his amazing love!

All best, Stephani Cave, LCPC ConnectEdPAIRS stephani@cbcchurchfamily.org The month of April is the host to Week of the Young Child, April 11th -15th. This celebrates early learning, young children, as well as their teachers and families. This year s theme is celebrating our youngest learners. Daily activities are based around five different themed days. They are as follows: Music Monday, Taco Tuesday, Artsy Wednesday, Work Together Thursday and Family Friday. There are so many planned activities for this week. This month we are also celebrating several staff anniversaries: Miss Kayla is celebrating her first year here at Children's House. Her outgoing, upbeat personality is a gift she uses daily in the two's room. She is very excited about continuing her education in the early childhood field. Miss Nicole has been in the early childhood field for 23 years. For the past two years she has brightened the toddler room with her talents. Her years of experience with the toddlers is a blessing we are grateful for. Miss Betsy is celebrating her first year here at Children's House. She has been in the early childhood field for thirty years. She has worked with many age groups through out the years. Each day she graces the two's room with her years of experience. Miss Tami holds a preschool CDA in early childhood with 26 years of experience in the early childhood field. She celebrates her fourth year with us here at Children's House. You can find Miss Tami each and every day learning with the Shooting Stars. Judy Vlach Children s House Director

APRIL ISSUE PAGE 5 Kumler Food Pantry We have had a request from the Kumler Food Pantry for personal care items; therefore, let s make April Personal Care Month! When you are next at the grocery store, convenience store, or wherever you purchase this type of item pick up an extra for the food pantry. Personal care items include: toothpaste, toothbrushes, bar soap, shampoo, etc. If you have a stash of these items from hotel visits these are welcome too. Please put them in the Serve the World Center. Remember, any nonperishable food item is also welcome. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3 3C Community Garden The 3C Community Garden located at 3rd and Canedy, just a short distance from Central Downtown, will soon get started for a new season! Beginning April 11th, weekly workdays will resume on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 7 PM. You are welcome to join for all of those times or a shorter part that works within your schedule. This is a great way to meet neighbors living near the church and community members who are passionate about Downtown Springfield. No knowledge or skills necessary, join in and learn throughout the season!
Inside News APRIL ISSUE PAGE 6 Student Sponsorships As youth summer trips come closer we are almost at our goal of finding a $100 sponsor for each student attending Big Stuf. This sponsorship helps us keep the cost of Big Stuf as low as possible for students by helping to cover the cost of sending chaperones and traveling. If you, your class, or any other group you are a part of would like to sponsor a student we are still in need of ten sponsorships. Let Josh know if you have any questions. Labels For Education Campbell Soup has announced that they will be ending their Labels for Education program. Many of you have faithfully collected UPC codes from various Campbell products over the years, and I have continued to send them to Murrow Indian Children s Home in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Since this program is being phased out, I will continue to collect Labels for Education UPC codes until May 8, That will give me time to trim and count all the codes and get them mailed to Murrow in time for them to send them on to Campbell Corp. before the phase out begins. If you have any Labels for Education UPC codes that you wish to submit, please place them in the collection container in the Serve the World Center. If you are not sure what part of the label contains the UPC code, feel free to include the entire label and I ll trim the portion I need. This phase out does NOT include the Box tops for Education program. As far as I know, that program will continue. Box tops for Education may be placed in the collection container in the Serve the World Center. Box tops for Education are trimmed, counted, and delivered to Graham School. If you have any questions about either of these programs, please let me know. Thank you for your faithful support over the years. Burma Justin Thrornburgh will be delivering a presentation in Merriam Hall on April 27 at 6:00 pm about his time in Burma. Justin is Brenda Thornburgh's son and grew up here at CBC. He is now a pastor at Emerson Ave. Baptist Church in Indianapolis, IN. Senior Prom - Big Band Dance On April 25th, Central Baptist Church welcomes the Lincoln Land Community College Big Band for an evening of live music from the bygone era of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, and more. The event is open to the public so please feel free to invite your friends. Formal dress is not required, but a fun option. Refreshments and a photo booth will be on site. Event begins at 6:00 in Merriam Hall. News From The Pews Jessi Pope, one of our Sunday childcare providers, has been nominated for the "Heart Of Gold" at the "Good As Gold" awards for volunteers and community outreach workers in the Springfield Community. Children's House was a finalist in the SJR Readers Choice Awards. Mike Logan was voted the Best Bankruptcy Attorney for the SJR Reader s Choice Awards. Sheila Fite
Letter From Dave Law APRIL ISSUE PAGE 7
Letter From The Finance Team APRIL ISSUE PAGE 8 Property Repairs The CBC Adult Ministry Team is beginning to make preparations to celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the dedication of the Springfield church building. Along with the wonderful 50 years of traditions, memories and the beauty of our church building, come the realities of increasingly expensive upkeep of this beautiful building. In January, plumbers working to unclog the kitchen drain opened up the basement hallway floor and discovered that the pipe used for the under-floor drains when the church was built in the 1960 s was brittle, collapsing and unrepairable. The drain pipes had a life expectancy of 50 years; an interesting coincidence given our upcoming celebration. Work related to installation of the new drain pipes caused a lot of drama in the church basement and cost nearly $33,000 to repair. Needless to say, the church s maintenance and repair budget will take a big hit in We budgeted a total of $30,000 for Maintenance and Repairs for the 2016 calendar year intending to cover all maintenance costs at the downtown and New Berlin locations. We have already experienced a couple of costly Heating and Air Conditioning repairs downtown and we anticipate that we will spend all of the amount budgeted for other repairs this year; the basement plumbing project was totally unexpected. Due largely to this problem and a $4,000 deficit in our 2016 budget, we are estimating a deficit totaling nearly $37,000 that we will have to make up this year. The Property Team has also presented the Finance Team with a list of nearly 11 repair and maintenance projects that need to be competed in the coming months, both in Springfield and New Berlin. A couple of the projects must be completed this year, including a major overhaul of the church elevator. Other projects are moving up on the urgent need-for-repair list (for example new gutters in Springfield) and will require major expenditures for capital improvements in the coming months estimated at a total of $350,000 to $400,000. As we begin efforts to keep our church properties safe, well-maintained, attractive and functional, all to assist in our ministry of Loving God, Loving People, and Serving the World, it will require us all to examine the connection between our spiritual commitment and our financial commitment as well. Please pray with us as we seek the Lord s guidance on obtaining funding for these critical improvements to our church buildings. Also, if you are considering an extra gift to Central s ministries this year, our capital improvements budget line could certainly use your help. Your Finance Team; Ross Hodel, Tom Langford, Gregg Harwood, Pat Miles & Mary Ellen Sharp
