1 314 S. Spruce Street Spokane, WA All Saints Gather Monthly Newsletter October 2013 Pastor s Message 1 My daughter, Bekah, gets married in a couple days. Wow another milestone reached, all our children are married off and definitely on their own now. Don t get me wrong it s a good thing, I love all our sons and daughter in-law and other in-laws the wedding has given me occasion to remember what it was like having children at home. May have been the best time of Laurel s and my life, of course our children won t remember it that way, for them a lot of it would be a confusing and vague memory. They are now in process of having those good memories with their kids and I suppose they may feel the same way I do someday in years! What I am trying to get to here is the idea that we live in a world of continuity of community. We have families of varying sorts, fathers, mothers, children, nieces; nephews etc. and we live in relationship to communities of other people, friends, other community members, other people in the world etc. It s what makes the world go round as they say. We all live and perceive things differently and it is in our recognition and acceptance of these differences that we can be more or less productive parts of the community. When we try to project or impose our ways of perception on others, we get off track and into trouble. For example: My perception of the recent dispute in town over the lingerie baristas. It s been on the news for last couple days, folks protesting and coffee shop owners defending themselves. I really don t have an opinion on that particular issue since it doesn t affect me, I understand both sides and all, but here is what REALLY frosts me; 200 people turn out at a city council meeting to make themselves heard on this issue, talking about decency laws and adult entertainment and such when people right around the corner from them are suffering from hunger, mental illness and abuse now THAT S truly indecent. It s bad enough that this world is such an ugly place with all the suffering and hardships for people in third world countries, and that in this, the richest country in the world, we still have 50 million hungry people. There is a documentary/movie called A place at the table that you can probably find on Netflix by now, it is quite good and gives us pause to think about the strangeness of having to provide food and shelter for folks in this country. Many people, when confronted by these realities, either strike out and blame people for their problems or they try to help minimally or in the worst case many just ignore. Single minded lack of concern coupled with inconsiderateness will be the thing that destroys this country. There are simply too many people that are becoming overwhelmed by the complexities of playing the game and of course the stakes of the game have never been higher and don t forget the game is rigged as well. If you re the best and the brightest and willing to work very hard you can get to maybe the middle class. Nothing wrong with that, except we are still leaving behind A LOT of people in the world and the numbers show that he gap is widening with no signs of stopping. So now you say hey Pastor, where s the good news in this sad tale? Well it is where it always is IN YOUR HEART. When you have the gospel story of love, grace and mercy in you then there is always hope we just need to figure out how to tell others in a compelling way. Many hands make light the work, we need more and more spiritual people of all faiths to step up to assist those that need help playing the game or even help finding the stadium. We have the blessing and burden to do and act in Jesus name. Pastor Alan

3 "People of Christ, living in community, working in partnership, doing the stuff of local ministry" Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit, and there are varieties of service, but the same LORD, and there are varieties of workings, but it is the same GOD who inspires them all in every thing. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind... love your neighbor as yourself. MATTHEW 22:37-40 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. MATTHEW 28:19-20 All Saints Lutheran Church has witnessed God in action in our congregation and in all the world. We seek to proclaim the Gospel that all may know the depth of God s love. We thankfully exercise our abilities, time and material assets in service to our neighbors. 3

5 God s beloved People, Cross Connection--October 2013 It hardly seems possible that a month has passed since the end of the Churchwide Assembly. The month has been full of rich beginnings and a sense of hope that I want to share with you. First, this past weekend Susan and I have had the privilege of being at the installations of our two new bishop colleagues on the West side of Washington State. Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson led and preached at both services and it is a joy to report that he is full of faithful vigor just as we experienced him in the synod two years ago. When asked how he is doing, he says, I m getting there, and by that I think he means he is coming to peace with the election of Elizabeth Eaton as our new presiding bishop. He has been a very classy leader over this last month and I m grateful he has 12 installations to do around the country. I think he is receiving the thanks of a grateful church. As to my own reflections on the election of Bp Eaton, I now see it more clearly as a time of mood and energy shift for the church. Through no fault of his own, I think the church felt anchored in the leadership of Bishop Hanson, and I mean that in two senses of the word. We were anchored in faith, and faithful to the gospel, during Bishop Hanson s tenure and I believe we were anchored in place during those same years. My sense is that the church has now said it is ready to navigate open water again, and that has required pulling up anchor for a free course into the future under new leadership. I look forward to the Conference of Bishop s meeting at the end of September when we will have a first chance to hear reflections from Bishop Eaton and faithful proclamation of the Gospel in the new day from our friend, Bp Jessica Crist, the preacher at Bishop Eaton s installation on October 5. I encourage you to listen in on that service via live streaming and celebrate with the whole church that we are setting an open course for the proclamation of Jesus love in and for this curious, complicated world. The second sign of hope is the work of The Way Forward task force and the way in which that work was received and affirmed by the Synod Council. (See the report of the Council elsewhere in the Cross Connection). We now begin an implementation phase and we will report to the pastors at Convocation in late October and to you through Cluster gatherings this fall and winter. If I could encapsulate this new work in a few words it would be like this: We are going to do some technical tweaking of the synod structure in order to set course for a more deeply relational and congregationally oriented ministry. I m deeply pleased with the work of the task force and the energy by which it was received at Synod Council. That meeting was nested within an excellent stewardship event hosted by Emmanuel Lutheran, Moscow, and provided us with an immediate example of the kind of energy we hope our structure will bring to local ministry. Thanks to all for fine work done by the task force, the council, and Emmanuel congregation during a great kick-off week for the new program year! And thanks to all the congregations of the synod who participated that same Sunday in a day of service to celebrate the 25 th Anniversary of the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. My final reason for hope always grounded in the Good News of God s love is the way I witnessed two cluster groups come together in the last two weeks. Our clusters are gatherings of congregations in a local area and part of the work (only part of the work!) is done through the the rostered leaders mostly pastors---meeting together to offer one another support and encouragement in ministry. When the WHOLE cluster gathers, including the elected leaders of the congregations, we re really hitting on all cylinders, and those are the meetings we are eager to schedule for this winter. In the meantime I was privileged to be present for 2 meetings of pastors where attendance was robust and the conversation kind, energetic, and hopeful. One pastor said, I always end August uncertain and a bit depressed, but when ministry restarts I m always energized and hopeful for the year ahead. What I witnessed in these cluster gatherings was a hopeful restart to ministry among colleagues who like and respect one another and who brought news of congregations that are eager to be organized and focused again! This is the wonder of the church to me, that we are so well led by our pastors, and that these same pastors are taking their hope from renewed lay leaders, Sunday School teachers, and church councils. Here we go into the new program year! To sum up, our fall begins with new hope, fresh voices, and faithful leaders who are showing renewed energy for our common mission: In a world challenged by war and an economy still struggling for rebirth; among those who are hungry for food and equally hungry for meaning in life, the Spirit is reviving us. This is a very, very good day to be the Church! 5 Pr. Martin Wells, Bishop

As a long time music teacher, church musician and organist one of her most important goals was to make better singers out of all of us. In the churches she served, she strove to make hymn singing meaningful, joyful and an important part of worship. This month, on Sunday, October 27th at 4:00 pm Central Lutheran Church (512 S. Bernard Street) will be hosting a hymn festival honoring her love of hymn singing. At this event, we will be singing many traditional hymns of the Church that she loved, accompanied by organ and piano. The congregation will have the opportunity to select some of their favorites to sing as well. The newly dedicated Janice Newell Memorial Carillon will also be heard lending its voice to the celebration. It is going to be a joyous time of raising our voices in song. Again, please mark the date and join us: Soli Deo Gloria! 11
12 TheBookParlor Read. Reflect. Act. Money and Medicine Free Film Showing Discussion time to follow Thursday 10/24/13 6:00pm At The Book Parlor 1425 W. Broadway Ave, Spokane, WA Film description: Money & Medicine investigates the dangers the nation faces from runaway health care spending as well as the dangers patients face from over-diagnosis and over-treatment. In addition to illuminating the waste and overtreatment that pervade our medical system, Money & Medicine explores promising ways to reduce health care expenditures and improve the overall quality of medical care. The Affordable Care Act that the Supreme Court recently upheld extends health care coverage to over 30 million uninsured Americans but actually does very little to make health care affordable. Since 1970, health care spending has grown 9.8% annually, more than twice the rate of inflation. Medical costs now consume 17.3% of our gross domestic product. That s $8,086 for every American or about twice as much per capita as most developed countries spend. Although we pay more for medical care than any other country, America currently ranks 19th in the world in preventable death, 26th in life expectancy, and 31st in infant mortality. Our more-is-better approach to health care is not only failing to make us healthier, it s threatening to bankrupt the nation. If medical costs continue to skyrocket, American industry will become increasingly uncompetitive; the government will run up increasing deficits as it struggles to fund Medicare, Medicaid, and the new subsidies that are part of the Affordable Care Act; and millions of Americans will delay or forego necessary care because out-of-pocket medical costs will become unaffordable.
