3 Pastor s Message Greetings and Happy Advent Season to you all! As we approach the end of the calendar year, these last few weeks of ordinary time and the end of the church year bring us face to face with Matthews s version of parables of judgment that can be hard to hear. However, these end times stories are full of hope and promise as well. Matthew gives us the hard news and the good news right alongside one another! Instead of focusing solely on the hard news of empty lamps we can see the good news of being invited to the wedding party! Eight talents become 15 talents and the work of the kingdom gets done despite some of the parties not being as good at the work. The story of the sheep and goats becomes less about the judgment of the goats and more about the fact that we have a chance to hear the message and then CHANGE THE FUTURE by changing our part in the story! Getting involved and helping the least of these becomes a way to make things in the kingdom better. our attention if we cannot give some of our attention to God s kingdom and the things that have been provided then maybe it will be very hard for us to stay prepared or to find the time to do something or even to give help to those who need it. The ball is in our court, as it has been since the beginning, God has invited us to the party, given us ample assets with which to do something, and asked us to help bring along those who have nothing, this isn t really very hard to do, but certainly these are things that need some of our time and effort. My hope and prayer for all of us this Advent season is that, while we wait, we make plans to give the time and effort to the kingdom work in which God has asked us to participate. The stories we read in the scripture need to be set alongside the stories we are living today. We hear and read about these things day after day and we have a choice to make we either get involved or we don t. The parables tell us to be prepared, to DO something with the gifts we ve been given, and to take care of those who are, for whatever reason, at a disadvantage and need help! I suppose if there are people who are infinitely stubborn and refuse to prepare or help in any way and continue to refuse the invitation to the party that is for ALL then they may just encounter the ultimate judgment of all being separated from God. Why in the world would any Christian want to be separate from God? I don t have that answer, but the distractions that the world provides are many and getting more every day. You will agree that in all the parables one thing is required 3

9 Congregational Budget Meeting There will be a congregational meeting on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at 11:45am in the fellowship hall to review and approve the 2018 budget. We will also be reviewing and approving our revised constitution. Open Council Positions The Congregation Council shall have general oversight of the life and activities of this congregation, and in particular its worship life, to the end that everything be done in accordance with the Word of God and the faith and practice of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.. (Section C12.04 of our Church Constitution) As the council looks ahead to the January Congregational Meeting, it was determined that there are 3 vacant council positions the congregation will need to vote upon. In order for a congregation member to be considered to serve on council, they must be: a. a valid voting member; b. have not served two consecutive council terms, and; c. not a spouse/partner of a current council member. Again, the council is asking members to prayerfully consider serving on Council and understand what will be asked of them in filling that role. Have you ever considered serving on Council but were unsure of the duties and responsibilities? If you are interested in serving or have questions before you make a decision, please contact our Council President, Karen Bryant at gobaz@msn.com. The Planning Team has prepared a Duties & Responsibilities sheet for council members (taken directly from the church constitution) that summarizes the position. Turkeys Needed!!!! pound turkeys are needed for the Christmas feast that our All Saints Soup Kitchen will be serving on Tuesday, December 19th. All donations can be brought to the office during business hours or labeled for the Soup Kitchen and placed in the walk-in freezer.
