1 Return to All Saints Home Page S. Spruce Street Spokane, WA All Saints Gather Monthly Newsletter July 2012 P a s t o r s M e s s a g e What is it about All Saints Lutheran that is important to you? Is it the comfort of the space, or the people you see when you are there, or maybe the various ministries that God does there? Do me a favor please write down what is special about All Saints to you personally, send it to me, I would really appreciate knowing what it is that brings you to the door again and again. You will find out the full extent of why I am asking in the next couple months, in the meantime, I know that it is important that you know why for yourself as well. Thank you... Pastor Alan In doing a little research I have discovered that most of our neighbors in Browne s Addition really don t know the entire scope of ministry here at All Saints. They are aware of the obvious ones like the community garden and meal program, they are much less aware of the other ministry God has us working on in this place. Part of the why is to better understand our role in the neighborhood as church and as community gathering place. I have mentioned briefly in months past that our role is changing, you may not have seen much up front, but I assure you the behind the scenes stuff has been going fast and furious. All Saints Lutheran is going to be the epicenter of the southwest part of Spokane as far as after school youth activities go, and also will be a vital resource for food and clothing distribution to the poor and homeless. You will have opportunities to participate in this ministry and mission in many more ways in the near future. We are planning to produce video information for you and the general public, that features not only us, but all of the various people that use our building and they will be stating why All Saints is important to them as well. We will interview neighbors, business folk, and many other people in this process. We will produce a visual and audio picture of what All Saints Lutheran does that goes far beyond our Sunday morning gatherings. The next months will be exciting, probably also messy and dusty and possibly annoying as we go about our daily and weekly things here at the church, but I think these minor inconveniences will be well worth the trouble when we think about the placement of God s mission and our service to the community. Nothing is etched in stone yet... but the stone masons are sharpening their chisels and preparing the rock as we speak. Thanks to all of you for your continued support of God s ministry in this place and for your support of the leadership here at All Saints Lutheran. Pastor Alan

3 "People of Christ, Living in Community, Working in Partnership, Doing the 'Stuff' of Local Ministry" ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH has witnessed God in action in our congregation, and in the world. We seek to proclaim the Gospel that all may know the depth of God's love. We thankfully exercise our abilities, time and material assets in service to our neighbor. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit, and there are varieties of service, but the same LORD, and there are varieties of workings, but it is the same GOD who inspires them all in every thing. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind... love your neighbor as yourself. MATTHEW 22:37-40 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. MATTHEW 28:19-20

7 Read.Reflect.Act Is there anything better than relaxing on a summer day with a good book? Whether you re relaxing by the lake, in the garden or in a nice air conditioned room, a good book is a great companion. As Groucho Marx is quoted as saying, Outside of a dog, a book is man s best friend. Inside of a dog it s too dark to read. Here are just a few summer reading options. For other ideas stop by the store or watch for our s, if you haven t been receiving s from us and would like to please let us know. Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. Jess is a local Spokane author and West Central resident. Book Description: The story begins in On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot, searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier. What unfolds is a dazzling, yet deeply human, roller coaster of a novel, spanning fifty years and nearly as many lives. From the lavish set of Cleopatra to the shabby revelry of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Walter introduces us to the tangled lives of a dozen unforgettable characters: the starstruck Italian innkeeper and his long-lost love; the heroically preserved producer who once brought them together and his idealistic young assistant; the army veteran turned fledgling novelist and the rakish Richard Burton himself, whose appetites set the whole story in motion along with the husbands and wives, lovers and dreamers, superstars and losers, who populate their world in the decades that follow. Gloriously inventive, constantly surprising, Beautiful Ruins is a story of flawed yet fascinating people, navigating the rocky shores of their lives while clinging to their improbable dreams. The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh Book Description: The Victorian language of flowers was used to convey romantic expressions: honeysuckle for devotion, asters for patience, and red roses for love. But for Victoria Jones, it s been more useful in communicating mistrust and solitude. After a childhood spent in the foster-care system, she is unable to get close to anybody, and her only connection to the world is through flowers and their meanings. Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what s been missing in her life. And when she s forced to confront a painful secret from her past, she must decide whether it s worth risking everything for a second chance at happiness. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak Book Description: It s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery... Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager exist- ence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can t resist books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau. This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.
