All Saints Home Page S. Spruce Street Spokane, WA All Saints Gather Monthly Newsletter February 2013 P a s t o r s M e s s a g e February is Super Bowl month for football fans. To the winner goes the Lombardi Trophy, named after the late, great Packer coach who won the first two Super Bowls. Vince Lombardi was a remarkable man, perhaps unique in his profession. Not only in his effect upon his players, but in the fact that he attended Mass every day! How, one might ask, could someone who coached in this most violent of sports go to Mass daily? Lombardi s beloved quarterback, Bart Starr, had a ready answer. Driving to training camp his rookie season, he anticipated the fairly gentle prospect of playing football for a man who went to Mass every day. Reality soon set in. As he explained, After the third day of camp I realized I was playing for a man who HAD to go to Mass every day! Can not the same be said of us all? Coach Lombardi thrived in a violent, sometimes profane world by demanding the extreme physical effort necessary for success. Yet somehow, by demeanor and treatment, he uplifted those around him such that they not only excelled on the field, but developed a profound love for him and each other. We all, in whatever our circumstances, have similar opportunities to apply Christian principles in our daily lives. Who will be long remembered? The boss who simply fires an employee for an unanticipated absence, or the supervisor who goes out of her way to arrange counseling for that subordinate, who was absent due to an unanticipated family crisis? The single parent who, with crying children about and feeling the pressures of unpaid bills and an empty pantry, lashes out in frustration, or the one who calmly sits with the children, raising them to her lap and sharing a quiet, calming moment of hugs and reassurance? A volunteer who, when handing a bag of food to an obviously affected homeless person, returns that person s sarcastic demands in kind, or who, instead, places a hand on that person s shoulder and offers to arrange a ride? The answers in those examples are fairly plain, certainly for a Christian. Yet our resolve, like Coach Lombardi s, needs to be reinforced by daily reflection and prayer over our Christian principles if we are to consistently react with grace in similar situations. I feel particularly blessed to pastor at All Saints because we are uniquely situated to help our brethren. Our neighborhood and city are filled with those in need of Christian love and example. As I noted in my January message, our State, as well as our nation, likewise needs to be guided toward policies and actions that reflect such values. As 2013 advances I will be discussing with you the various ways we can be of service, as Christian activists, at all levels. Yet, such service begins with our daily commitment to those immediately around us. May we proceed through the year by daily reinforcing that commitment with prayer and reflection on the teachings of our Lord and Savior. Pastor Alan With many thanks to Larry Ray!

"People of Christ, Living in Community, Working in Partnership, Doing the 'Stuff' of Local Ministry" ALL SAINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH has witnessed God in action in our congregation, and in the world. We seek to proclaim the Gospel that all may know the depth of God's love. We thankfully exercise our abilities, time and material assets in service to our neighbor. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same spirit, and there are varieties of service, but the same LORD, and there are varieties of workings, but it is the same GOD who inspires them all in every thing. 1 CORINTHIANS 12:4-6 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind... love your neighbor as yourself. MATTHEW 22:37-40 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the FATHER, and of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you, and remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. MATTHEW 28:19-20

God's beloved people, Cross Connection-February 2013 Those of you who get THE LUTHERAN magazine recently saw a wonderful article about Holden Village, a ministry affiliated with the ELCA and a retreat center housing one of our synod congregations, Fullness of God Lutheran Church. This is the 50 th anniversary of the Village and THE LUTHERAN story told about key developments in addressing mine damage from the 1940 s and 50 s. The dream of mine remediation is coming true! Susan and I had the occasion to visit Holden in early January and discovered a winter community of faithfulness and grace. Pastor Scott Kershner is the Village Pastor and leads the community in daily worship and the Sunday celebration. The participation of children was especially notable in this unique community that has been particularly good at welcoming disaffected young searchers back to the faith. Holden is open the next two summers for anyone interested in pitching in and becoming part of a second Forerunners group, echoing the work done in the early 1960 s to open Holden as a ministry. I give thanks to God for the gift of Holden, her pastor Scott, her directors Chuck and Stephanie Carpenter, and her volunteers! Happy Birthday Holden! Here s to another 50 years! *** The Synod Council will meet in late January to receive reports, assess the fiscal year (ending January 31, 2013 THERE S STILL TIME TO MAKE YOUR 2012 MISSION SUPPORT GOAL!!) and hear the report of the first two meetings of THE WAY FORWARD, a special working group convened to give the Council advice on the future of the Synod ministry. Two more meetings of THE WAY FORWARD will be held before the Synod Assembly and a complete report will be made to those of you who will be voting members of the Assembly. I think THE WAY FORWARD is proving to be an excellent vehicle for the deep reflection and goal setting we need to do as a synod. If you d like to know more about this conversation, please go to the Synod website and open the tab THE WAY FOR- WARD. *** Lent begins this month with Ash Wednesday, February 13 th. I encourage you to set this season apart and use it as preparation for the events of our Holy Week. Here we are in the heart of our proclamation, God with us, God revealed, God the servant of Life. Even as we welcome the rebirth of life during early spring, we look forward to the resurrection of Life itself in Jesus Christ. To all the bad news in life God s Good News in life is the Way of Jesus. We witness and participate in this Way during the season of Lent. I pray that this is a deeply rich time for you. God s richest blessings, Pr. Martin Wells, Bishop msmmwells@aol.com or

Stewardship, Managing God s Kingdom Genesis 1:1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. God is the owner, and man is the manager of His creation. Sometimes it is hard to understand but everything we have are gifts that He has given us. Our finances, homes, cars, and all that we possess are His. Being managers of God s creation is a big task and we need to come together to work, and manage whatever God gives us to do, being good Stewards of His Creation. Being a good Steward is the management of our time, our possessions, our environment and our health. It is our faith in believing that God is our creator, motivating ourselves as followers in Christ to move into action whether it is our time, our money, or our God given ways we use our hands and our feet to do His work. All of these things are gifts that God has given us. At All Saints Lutheran Church, we all have agreed to support our missions that we have developed over the years, whether it is taking care of our church, or supporting the outreach programs that we have put into place. The food program has been a success of feeding the hungry every Tuesday night for over 5 years. Unfortunately our grants have disappeared and support from some of the other churches that have supported it in the past. These programs go on, week by week, month by month and year after year. We as good Stewards cannot forget about these outreaches if we plan on continuing to support them. Our finances always seem to be the main concern when we support these programs. Money or sharing what we have worked hard to earn is one of the most difficult things for people to give up. We think of our possessions as our own. Really they aren t, they re God s. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 The point is this: Whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as they have decided in their heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. One thing that we can focus on is everyone came into this world with nothing and will leave here with nothing. Think of your money as a gift or a loan that God has given you to share and glorify Him. See yourself as a steward rather than a possessor. In the days ahead, each one of us needs to reflect and think about where we stand as Stewards and managers of His creation. Can I make better use of my time and talents that God has given me? Will a simple dollar help benefit these outreaches, and my church? The answer is YES! Everything you give back helps in supporting and managing His kingdom. David Jelinek

SPEAR News and Notes February 2013 Hello from the kids and the staff and board of SPEAR! Our Christmas Celebration at the former Rev. Hamp s church on the corner north of the SPEAR Center was fantastic! The kids did a great job and we had a good turnout. Candy Canes with the Legend of the Candy Cane was given to everyone who came. Due to the generosity of the churches who support SPEAR, the kids and their families received many very nice gifts. Liz McGaughy, who serves on the Board, made 33 pillowcases one for each child to go with new pillows and new blankets. Thank you so much, Liz. The ladies of Zion Lutheran Church made many quilts for some of the blankets. The kids were thrilled! The Christmas program was a Thrivent sponsored program and with the Thrivent money, we have purchased paint to refresh the interior of the SPEAR Center. For January, we are spending a lot of time with the kids with their homework. According to Sheryl Kruger, none of the SPEAR kids, over the years, have dropped out of school. Wow! We will be starting our Bikes for Books project again soon, and if you are sorting out books, we would love to have your hand-me-downs especially teen books and books for boys. We are hoping to have several bikes to give to our winners again this year. You should see their eyes when they see that the bikes are for real! SPEAR Wish List for February: The usual, paper goods, feminine hygiene products, shaving cream and razors, laundry and dishwashing (liquid) detergent, deodorant, etc. And we have a real need for soups, chili and breakfast cereal and the kids would like something other than corn flakes... soup and chili fly out the door as fast as it comes in. We also need warm caps, mittens or gloves I think gloves come to the same end as the one missing sock in the laundry. We are starting to collect hams for Easter dinners for our families. Again, your generosity gave the families all nice Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. How can we thank you enough? We are continuing to set aside funds to start the kitchen project. We are trying to contact Mark Peterson s Extreme Team with KXLY to see if they can help us with our project. We are not sure at this time, if the painting project will be done sooner to freshen up our space or later with the building project. We do have a need for more volunteers for SPEAR to help with the meals, to help with homework, to help with food pickup if you would like to help with anything, please call or us. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your support for the SPEAR program! And if you would like to get involved with SPEAR, call Claudia Holtz at for more information, or her at choltz.spear@gmail.com Check out our website at We are still working on making the website an active part of our communication with you.
