3 Acting in Love By Pastor Alan Eschenbacher This newsletter article for October 2014 is one that has been on my mind for a long time. In light of all the changes in our building and the new opportunities for ministry, my focus has been very narrow lately, I think I need to step back and address a broader world view for a moment. Please bear with me; You all are aware of the ongoing tensions in the middle east, including the United States entry into yet another war, this time against an Islamic group called ISIS or ISIL and others. The meaning of the letters is not important. What is important is that their message of discipleship is this: Convert to Islam or die. This is nothing new, groups like this have been around for centuries, and lest we forget, the Christian Crusaders of the 1100 s often times had a similar mantra of convert to Christianity or die. None of these things, then or now, excuses militant radical killing in the name of religion or national defense. We have become so engrossed in who started what, who attacked whom first, what they did to each other in the past and so many other intricacies that there really is no way to sort things out using the tactics being employed now. I was in college at Gonzaga University from During that time I had many classes in philosophy/ religion and these always included real time analysis of current events. In July 1981, Israel responded to PLO rocket attacks on northern Israeli settlements by bombing PLO encampments in southern Lebanon sound familiar? Different song same tune. The 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution, the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in September 1980, and the December 1980 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan badly divided the Arab world. As our university classroom discussions raged regarding all these Middle East events, it seemed to me much ado about nothing! I wasn t just some dumb 20 something kid either, I had read the reports, watched the news coverage and came to a decision in my mind that all this going on was based on millenniums of fighting and discord in the region and guess what? MORE FIGHTING AND KILLING WILL NOT SOLVE IT! It never has and never will. These are groups of people with long standing differences that CANNOT be resolved until someone TURNS AROUND and goes in the totally opposite way of peace and love. Let me tell you of just one experience I had around this subject. A few years ago our church hosted a couple of events, simply providing the location for 2 Palestinian speakers sponsored by the Peace and Justice Action League. Not long after these speakers I heard from a group of men from Temple Beth-Shalom asking if they could make a presentation from the Israeli side of things. During a preview of their presentation, I had the greatest sense of déjà vu I have ever had, I was transported back in time to 1981 to a religion class where the exact same presentation was made. 30 years later the arguments ARE THE SAME! All of the players in the Middle East game have been doing this so long the arguments and justification don t change, it suddenly became clear to me during that déjà vu moment, that they NEVER WILL. We, the USA, keep getting ourselves involved in a never-ending war and all that happens is more death and injury and of course more wealth for the arms makers, mercenaries and Bankers. The time has come for a new tactic love and forgiveness. Just like Jesus, and many others, taught 2000 plus years ago. We, first world, humans have become unable to change we like our capitalism and the security it provides, we throw our weight and our money around the world to preserve OUR way of life, and disregard what it does to others. Capitalism generates INEQUALITY, radical religious views create ongoing WAR. The really sad thing is that 80% or more of the world population doesn t want this, it is a really small percentage of the world population that keeps this kind of thinking going. WHAT MUST HAPPEN is that the rest of us need to RADICALLY change our actions and demand that the small percentage of people that keep these inequalities going, whether its religious war or economic war, STOP doing what they have been doing. We accomplish this by changing our buying and consumption habits and by increasing our love for ALL our brothers and sisters in the world. It doesn t take religion to do this everyday people, like you and I, MUST stand up and ACT in love for all people and love for this world we live in. 3

8 HOUSE CHURCH BIBLE STUDIES Will meet on Wednesday, October 8th at 11am in the Fellowship Hall at All Saints. COFFEE NEEDED!!!!! We are running low on coffee for the fellowship coffee hour after our worship service. The offering for fellowship usually isn't enough to purchase a can of coffee. If you drink coffee would you be willing to help us out with our coffee supply? The next time you go to the store consider purchasing a can of coffee for our coffee hour. We will make sure to keep the extra supply secure and for our use. Also, please don't purchase the cheapest coffee and not the most expensive either. Thanks so much! For more information SERVING AT ST ANN CATHOLIC CHURCH 2120 E. First Spokane, WA DONATIONS NEEDED FOR PANTRY/SOUP KITCHEN The Soup Kitchen/Pantry at All Saints is collecting empty prescription bottles to fill with shampoo/conditioner, lotion and body soap. We will distribute these to our clients at the Tuesday night dinner. Donations are greatly appreciated. Please try and remove labels before bringing them to the church office. A group of congregations, including All Saints (we are scheduled every nine weeks), participate in providing a Sunday Lunch to the homeless at St. Ann Catholic Church. Sunday, October 5th we will serve the lunch and help clean up. Please plan to arrive prior to 1pm. 8

9 FROM THE BOOK PARLOR In August 2004 I started my journey at The Lutheran Book Parlor. I moved into the apartment at 1414 W Broadway right above the bookstore. Each morning I walked down the stairs (Or later across the street) to work I never knew what the day would bring. Whether it was a conversation with a homeless neighbor or a theological discussion with a pastor, each day had its own unique interaction. I remember a man who went by the name Lucky, I met him just after he'd been released from jail. He walked into the store carrying his brown bag with his belongings. He was looking for a particular book, one he had started reading while in jail but hadn't been able to finish. He was very excited to get his hands on a copy. We talked for a bit about reading. Lucky shared how he never liked to read before but this book had really grabbed him and ignited a new love to read. During my time at The Book Parlor we have traveled to Eugene, Portland, Bend, Everett, Redmond, Boise, Walla Walla, Wenatchee, Kennewick/Richland, Idaho Falls, Great Falls and Billings...and others I'm sure I'm forgetting at the moment. This little bookstore has not only traveled locally but we've sold books all over the world. We all thought it was a hoot the morning our little Lutheran bookstore sold and shipped a book to the Vatican. Just doing our part to bring unity to the Church. I carry with me many wonderful memories and experiences from my time here. Whether it was giving a ride to an injured pig, the many movie and book discussions, or helping track down the stubbornly hard to find out of print book, I have enjoyed my work at The Book Parlor. But it is time for me to move on. I am excited to see the future of The Book Parlor under new leadership. It has truly been a place of blessing to me, and I would encourage anyone who is able to spend time at The Book Parlor. I own a great many thanks to everyone at Salem for allowing me to be a part of this ministry for so many years. I will miss spending my days at The Book Parlor but I look forward to the new adventures ahead of me. Program: The Mission Community Outreach Center Physical Offering: the Outreach Center is aiming to provide gifts of new clothing to 1000 children, infant through 6th grade. Their wish list includes new pairs of blue jeans, outfits for the younger children, new underwear, hats, gloves, scarves, hygiene items, toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Travel sizes are welcome.
