1 Announcements September 5 & 6, 2009 James tells us to stop showing favoritism in the assembly, treating the rich visitor with more honor than the poor one. Jesus himself seems to show partiality in his first response to the Syrophoenician woman in today's gospel. Was he testing her faith in saying Gentiles don't deserve the goods meant for God's children? Or was he speaking out of his human worldview, but transcended those limits when she took him by surprise with her reply? Either way, the story tells us that God shows no partiality. FROM PASTOR MITCHELL: A number of our members have asked if there is a way for them to contribute to Trinity and be assured that NONE of their giving will go toward the ELCA through our congregational benevolence. Dan Scott, our Financial Secretary, and I have come up with a way to make sure that those financial gifts are used ONLY locally. Please mark your envelope or attach a note to it and Dan will see that all contributions from you are routed accordingly. THANK YOU to over 40 youth and 15 adults of our congregation who worked hard during July and August to scrape, prime, and paint the exterior of the blue rental house and garage in Trinity s back yard. You did a fantastic job this was a massive undertaking! We also thank Dan Scott (TLC Property Manager) for providing the youth with this opportunity to fundraise towards our mission trips! SUPPER in Jack s Place this Wednesday, September 9 serving from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Menu: chicken noodle and potato soups, turkey and hot ham n cheese sandwiches, salad, dessert and beverage, all for $4/adult and $2/ages 8 years and younger. SERVANTS OF THE MONARCH: If you enjoyed last Sunday s worship experience in Praise Worship in which we learned a great deal about the real-life connections between Monarch Butterflies and our lives as Christians, then perhaps you would be interested in digging a little deeper. Many of you had an opportunity following the service to come up front and meet Michelle Denny, or Monarch Michelle. She has a passion for both Monarchs in her life.the Butterfly and Her Lord Jesus! Perhaps you feel this passion to and would like to become part of a Share Group with a purpose and a mission. This group would enjoy times of going out into nature and finding Crysalis or caterpillars, and then perhaps giving the healing gift of a chrysalis to someone who needs healing in their life physically or emotionally. Many of you experienced the joy and wonder of watching this mysterious process this past Sunday. This group could get together throughout the year and enjoy study, fellowship & a unique mission as they grow and learn together as Servants of The Monarch. THE TRINITY ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS is accepting registration for the fall semester. The classes begin the week of September 14 and run through December. Instruction is available in voice, piano and most instruments. Class offerings include Early Childhood Music, Exploring Hand Drums, Guitar Class, Jazz Ensemble and Youth Theatre. This year we are also offering small group as well as individual lessons on band and string instruments for elementary band and orchestra students. Maybe you could just use a mid-week pick me-up Beginning Wednesday, September 16 we will have several new short-term small group opportunities here at the church. The first one is an opportunity to watch some NOOMA videos. Already watched some in Sunday School? That s okay; we would love your insight. Don t know what NOOMA is? That s okay too. These videos are only about 12 minutes long but pack in a great message in a short period of time. Each video stands alone, so don t worry if you can t come every week. Join us downstairs in the Community Room at 6:15 p.m. and watch the bulletin and website for more opportunities at a location near you! WOMEN OF TRINITY: We are offering a great opportunity for a short-term mid-week study for all women of the congregation. Beginning Thursday, September 17, Katie Smeltzer will guide us through When Christ Comes by Max Lucado. We will meet at

6 Downtown Perk, 145 W. Main Street in Ashland for six consecutive weeks. There are books available at the church for you to borrow (and Katie will have a few extra too) so bring a friend and join in this great study. MOWANA FALL FESTIVAL AND BENE- FIT AUCTION: Sunday, October 4 is your opportunity to bring the entire family to Camp Mowana to enjoy autumn at its festive best! Enjoy live music, great food, hayrides, crafts and more. The Benefit Auction will feature handmade quilts, fine handcrafts, theme baskets and many other unique items. There will also be pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting and pumpkin-carving for the kids. All proceeds will benefit summer camperships for deserving youth. Come out and enjoy the fun! The Ship High Schoolers meet in the Youth Room on Sunday the 13 th from 6:00 8:00pm for a great night of fellowship, food, and the first session in our series, Big Q s: Is There a Higher Power? Notes from Nate Youth Council 9 th 12 th Graders who desire to be part of student leadership should grab an application off of the Youth Office door, complete it, and get it to Nate ASAP. We ll have our first Youth Council meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9 th (for those who have applied!). Wednesday Night Youth Ministries begin on Wednesday, September 16 th!!! *WHAT s UP!
