1 NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage News UPDATE Editor: Bill Wardlaw February, 2011 Presbyterian Pilgrimage #103, February 10-13, 2011, Camp Hanes A Letter From The Rector When I was asked to be Rector for NCPP # 103 I felt like Alfred E. Newman from the Mad magazine, Who Me? I was reminded of the devotional that Mari Jo Dryden did at a Piedmont NCPP Leadership Conference meeting last year, when she asked the question How do you see Christ in the world with all the negativity we see from the news media? We discussed how individuals can and do make a difference and that you can see the light of Christ in persons who aren t afraid to share and show their commitment to doing God s work here on earth, regardless of the circumstances. The theme for NCPP # 103 is from Matthew 5:14-16: You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. The Pilgrimage weekend is God s call to all to come to the city, sit at the family table, share, grow and be nourished spiritually so your light will shine in the world that all may see God s good works in all of us. God said yes, you are to be my light to world. The team and I have felt your prayers and support and we thank you with all that is within us. Please continue to pray that God will awaken and guide the spirit in those who are to be guests at NCPP # 103. Your Humble Rector, Russ

4 Page 4 NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage News A Note From The Editor North Carolina Presbyterian Pilgrimage: Secrets? Or Surprises? One of the comments that I ve heard over the years regarding Pilgrimage or Cursillo is that there are secrets that are not shared outside of the community of those who have experienced a Pilgrimage or Cursillo weekend. While we may argue that this is not entirely true, the fact is there are surprises planned into the weekend. So, what do we tell a prospective guest, or someone interested in knowing more about the Pilgrimage experience? We give them a copy of the Pilgrimage brochure (available on the web site.). We answer their questions truthfully and we tell them anything they want to know about Pilgrimage. Anything! We avoid using words or phrases that convey a sense of secrecy, including I can t tell you or any of its variations. We tell them that the Pilgrimage has its roots in Spain, and that in recognition of our heritage, we still use a few Spanish terms or phrases on the weekend. We tell them that the Spanish Word Cursillo means Short Course and that the Pilgrimage weekend is an experience, a short course in Christian living. We tell them that the Cursillo/Pilgrimage experience is world-wide in scope, and has been experienced by millions of people in hundreds of countries. So, what about the weekend surprises? The Serenade? The Prayer Banner? The Palanca? The Luminaria? The Flower Cross? Each has a meaning and purpose on the weekend. Like a gift given at someone s birthday, it is nice if it is a surprise but not absolutely necessary. These are wonderful acts of love and must be experienced to fully understand the end result. There is a difference between secrets and surprises. Bill Wardlaw San Francisco Men s Cursillo #14 - January, Table of John

To all pilgrims! What s Happening? It is time to sign up to pray for our coming weekend at Camp Hanes - February 10-13, If you haven't done it before, here s how you get your name and prayer time on the Prayer Banner: Go to and then to Fourth Day. Pull down the menu to Prayer Banner. Our banner is there with many others. Make sure you select the correct one! Click on View Entire Banner. Scroll down to the [\prayer time slot you want and click on Time. This will bring up a form to fill out. Please do not attempt to put your info into a slot that is already taken; that WILL ERASE the other person's data. If all spots are filled, you can notify us to add your name and the time you would like and we will do it MANUALLY (send your name and time slot request to maynardgso@aol.com or call to be added to prayer banner.) The sooner the slots are filled the more time we have to get the banner ready for the weekend. Be sure and notify your reunion group members to add their names too. Of course you can also sign up and pray for any of the other weekends you see prayer banners for! They would love it. And remember the Serenade on Saturday February 12th! Check web site for time. God loves you and so do we, Mike and Cindi Maynard the prayer banner guys!
6 Page 6 NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage News More of What s Happening? Christ calls us to be in community with fellow Christians. It is a comfort knowing that we have companions on our journey. We have people traveling with us to help us understand or manage the bumps in the road that face us on a daily basis. Reunion groups allow us the opportunity to fellowship with other believers. By meeting with our sisters, we stay connected and are held accountable for our piety, study, and action. Our friendships provide that breath of fresh air when we need it the most and helps strengthen our spiritual journey. In our reunion group we share our joys and sadness in a caring and supportive group. We have been meeting for 15 years and have come to be known as "Together in Grace" or TIG for short. We nurture each other and on a larger scale nurture the 4th day through prayer, palanca, serenades, and serving on teams. We grow through our studies, our sharing, and by helping each other with all that life brings. We have fun with each other doing service projects and going on retreats. We are bound together and serve as a reminder to each other that God loves us, each of us, just as we are.
