1 November 2017 Eastern NC Presbyterian Pilgrimage Newsletter A Letter from the Rector Dear Friends, In just a few weeks, the guests will arrive at Camp Dixie to be surrounded by Christ s love during NCPP #149! I have to say, I never thought I would ever be in the position of Rector but God had other ideas. I have been truly humbled as I have walked through this journey with the team that God has assembled. This team...no other words than to say they are awesome! I love and appreciate each of them and the love, grace and talents they have shared with each other. I really struggled about accepting the call to lead this weekend. As I said, I never really thought that Rector was a good fit for me...i just like serving, you know, the worker bee. As God would have it, each time I questioned, He confirmed. So many times, God calls us to serve when we think we are not ready. He doesn t ask us to leap but just to take a step out in faith and walk in His will for our lives. When we step out, God steps in to walk beside us even when we are afraid. So, I took the step out and God has walked beside this team in every way. Our scripture for the weekend is Isaiah 43:5, Do not be afraid for I am with you. We all are caught in fear sometimes, but if we rest in the fact that God is with us, we can find peace and confidence in what He has for us. The team and I have felt your prayers and ask that you continue to pray for us and our guests. We also ask for the support of the 4th Day Community in a variety of other ways. We hope to see many of our friends at the Send-off...or your name on the Prayer Banner as a special gift of grace. Serenade wouldn t be the same without your beautiful faces and voices so join us for the fun! I would also love to see you at the closing ceremony to welcome the new Pilgrims into the 4th Day Community. I can t wait to see what God has in store for NCPP #149! Serenade is Saturday night at 5:30 pm. We will meet in the gym past the playground on the left from camp. We will eat; then practice with the band, serenade the guests and team, then leave for home. Remember to wear your crosses and name tags. Please remember that serenade is not the time for hugging, talking to, touching or showing special attention to individual guests or team. 5 Palanca When we think of Palanca, we generally think of personal Palanca-the notes we write to be included in the participants Palanca bags, or perhaps some form of pillow Palanca or table Palanca. Palanca falls into three different categories: Personal Palanca refers to the notes and messages of love, encouragement and support that are distributed to everybody on the weekend at a set, specific time. Personal Palanca is one of the most meaningful things of the weekend. The messages should be short and reflect God s love and the love of God s people for the pilgrim or the team member receiving the message. Group Palanca consists of gifts to all the participants and staff on the weekend. These are usually from a group or individuals within the Fourth Day and are often handmade. Group Palanca needs to be provided in sufficient quantity for all the pilgrims and staff, or at least for all the pilgrims on the weekend. External Palanca refers to the messages that are exchanged between Cursillo communities in support of the weekend, we normally call these Wall Palanca. There is one more form of Palanca and that is Praying for the pilgrims and the team every minute during the weekend. What better gift to give then the gift of Prayer. Remember how you felt the first time you experienced the unrolling of the Prayer Banner? If you would like to participate in the Prayer Banner go to and sign up or us at encppprayerbanner@gmail.com. David and Sheri Lasater Updates Qualified Pastor List: Pastor Rick McDuffie has recently complied an updated list of qualified pastors per guidelines developed by the State Council in The list will be used by the Eastern Council and rectors as pastors are needed. Storage Unit Reorganized: In May, 2017, a group of hard working folks got together and cleaned out/organized the storage unit. They meticulously categorized the unit s contents into see-through containers that will make it much easier when it s time for NCPP at Camp Dixie. 5

Online directory of the entire NC 4th day including addresses and phone numbers Upcoming weekend dates, locations, and rectors Newsletters from most weekends Logos from most weekends Current guest and sponsor applications A link to the prayer banner website A NCPP brochure for potential guests And much more.. Please verify that YOUR contact information is still current in the online directory! Why? So your brothers, sisters, and future rectors can contact you! Also, make sure your reunion sisters and brothers received their newsletter. If not, ask them to update their address! Would You Like To Serve On A Pilgrimage Team? If you would like to serve on a team, download the team application form from the NCPP web site Fill it out and send it to the rector of the weekend. On the form, you can indicate your preference for your role on the team. However, depending on the needs of the team, preferences may not always be accommodated. It is not always possible for rectors to find a spot for everyone who wishes to serve on a weekend, but they are particularly interested in having new members of the 4th Day Community serve on teams. Remember you may also serve by sponsoring guests, being part of the prayer banner, providing meals for team meetings, supplying palanca for guests, participating in serenade, or helping with set-up and cleanup of camp. How can you plan on serving for an upcoming weekend? 6

But only if we expect it can we see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us. We stepped out in faith when we accepted an invitation to attend Pilgrimage. We were told not to anticipate but to trust God as the experience of the weekend unfolded uniquely for each of us. God revealed many surprises to me over those three memorable days at Camp Dixie. I needed to be still at that point in my life so that I could see, hear, and feel the wonders God had in store for me. Autumn s tranquility and the cooler temperatures seem to call me back to Camp Dixie this time of year. It is one of my favorite places to be still, spend quality time with God, and be His hands and feet. I know that many of you feel the same way. As the busyness of the holiday season looms on the horizon, I challenge you to take time to see, hear, and feel the surprises that God has in store for you. For our guests and team members, I pray that God unveils many wonders over the weekend. For others of you who will take part in Send-Off, Serenade, Closura and/or Ultreya, may God s surprises open a new place in your hearts where we can praise God and welcome new friends into the Fourth Day Community. 8 Where in the world is Camp Dixie? FROM POINTS NORTH: I-95 S to Hwy 87 S (Exit 46) Take Hwy 87 S towards Elizabethtown for miles Go approximately 1 mile past the Dupont Plant Entrance Turn right onto Bladen Union Church Road (the next paved right) Camp Dixie will be on your left FROM POINTS SOUTH: I-95 N to Hwy 20 E (St. Pauls Exit) Continue through St. Pauls, past the landfill and Rocco Farms Plant Cross a little bridge at Gallberry Swamp and then cross the county line Take the next left onto Pages Lake Road Continue for approximately 2 miles Camp Dixie will be on the right FROM POINTS WEST: Alternative route is to stay on 74E to 95N and follow direction from the south, above 74E to Hwy 71N 71N to 20E and continue through St. Pauls Cross a little bridge at Gallberry Swamp and then cross the county line Take the next left onto Pages Lake Road. Continue for approximately 2 miles. Camp Dixie will be on the right.
