Our Mission Acting cooperatively from our various faith traditions, the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal develops projects and programs which help renew our community by identifying, addressing, and overcoming obstacles which keep people from decent, affordable housing.

Message from our Board President The Board of Directors of the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal is pleased with the accomplishments of 2015.

2 Message from our Board President The Board of Directors of the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal is pleased with the accomplishments of RCCR continues to provide safe decent affordable housing for low income families through transitional and rental housing, along with home ownership and new development. Check out our accomplishments below. Kelly Shafer, Board President, Elected October Accomplishments $2.5 RCCR facilitated through new home mortgages MILLION $323,490 RCCR added through single family home construction 400+ Volunteer hours provided to RCCR TRANSITIONAL HOUSING SAMARITAN INN 17 - Residents 5 - Graduates 20 - Served Through Non-Resident Outreach RENTAL HOUSING SMITH STREET STATION 41 Renters HOME OWNERSHIP Families served through Housing Counseling 23 - Families became first time home owners 2 - Homes constructed for Low Income Families

He served in this capacity on a volunteer basis for five years, from 1987 until 1992.

3 2015 At a Glance Bean Dinner Recognition David Lambert, health care executive, attorney and public servant, was honored at the 19th Annual Beans and Cornbread Dinner. David was the first Program Director for RCCR. He served in this capacity on a volunteer basis for five years, from 1987 until It was during that time that both the Samaritan Inn and Smith Street Station projects were developed. Today, David is WVMI & Quality Insights Chief Administrative Officer Sources of Income

Wall of Fame Inductee James Butterworth was inducted onto our Wall of Fame at the Annual Meeting in October. The Wall of Fame award was created at the Samaritan Inn 20th Anniversary.

In order to be included, recipients must have graduated at least 5 years earlier, be active in the community, remain in recovery and maintain contact with Samaritan Inn.

Previous inductees include: William Childs, Larry Lamar, George Paugh, Hayward Skoglund, Michael Gillium, Greg Menear, Tom Edwards, Barry Copley, Frank Pensula, Scott Proctor, Michael Cooney, and

4 Wall of Fame Inductee James Butterworth was inducted onto our Wall of Fame at the Annual Meeting in October. The Wall of Fame award was created at the Samaritan Inn 20th Anniversary. Each year graduates are selected for this honor. In order to be included, recipients must have graduated at least 5 years earlier, be active in the community, remain in recovery and maintain contact with Samaritan Inn. James is the 13th inductee to the Wall of Fame. Previous inductees include: William Childs, Larry Lamar, George Paugh, Hayward Skoglund, Michael Gillium, Greg Menear, Tom Edwards, Barry Copley, Frank Pensula, Scott Proctor, Michael Cooney, and Emanuel Robinson III. 25 Homes for Low Income Families The homes shown here bring our total to 25 single family homes built for low income families since Before that time 8 condos were rehabbed and sold to low income families by RCCR. These homes represent the lives of 33 families changed forever as they build assets for their families. Many of these families thought they would never be able to own a home. With the Housing Counseling they received, they were prepared for home ownership and have survived, even during the slowdown in the economy.

5 Jimmy s Story Seven years ago Jimmy was a resident of one of Charleston s emergency homeless shelters for men. After almost ten years, since he graduated from high school, he had managed to destroy relationships and trust with everyone in his life. He had no job, no home, no clothes, no friends and no hope. He was addicted to narcotics. A caseworker at the men s shelter contacted the staff at Samaritan Inn. The caseworker had determined that this was a person who was ready to commit to changing his life. After managing to stay clean for thirty days, Jimmy applied to Samaritan Inn and was eventually accepted into the program. Once he entered the program and the staff was able to do his assessment and help him set goals, he found a temporary part-time job in the food service industry and began his comeback. With the help of the Samaritan Inn program, he was able to redevelop old skills and learn new basic life skills. His participation in the program enabled him to gain confidence in himself and begin to find hope as he accomplished each goal. Jimmy became active in the twelve-step program of NA and eventually began to take leadership roles in that fellowship. Over time, he became an excellent cook and prepared many delicious meals for the other residents. After being a part of the Samaritan Inn program for eight months, Jimmy decided to investigate the possibility of enrolling in college. With the help of SI staff, the financial aid office at the college and his parents (whom he had reconciled with) he was able to start college. He was a full-time college student when he graduated from Samaritan Inn after fourteen months. After five years, he graduated from college with a BA in Education. He became a middle school teacher. He now is able to guide school children, at their most vulnerable time, to identify their possible perils and comprehend the negatives of making bad decisions. To this day he remains a fervent volunteer in the program. Not only does he serve as a good example for men who are in the program today and a hope for what is possible when you commit to change and accept the guidance offered at the Samaritan Inn, but he is heralded for his ability to cook some of the most incredibly tasty meals the men get to eat. He is a true success!
