Corrigan entrusted the care of the newly formed parish of St. Francis de Sales to the Missionary Fathers of La Salette. The first pastor. Rev. M. Julien Ginet, M.S., was architect and builder of the Phoenicia church dedicated Sunday, August 21, The Missionary Fathers of La Salette returned pastoral care of St. Francis de Sales Parish to the Archdiocese of New York in Across from the church is a shrine and grotto dedicated to Our Lady of La Salette. This was understood as a Messianic prophecy. Here the disciples saw more clearly Jesus as the Messiah who burned with zeal for God's house. The Jewish authorities, however, wanted proof that Jesus had divine authority to act as he did. They demanded a sign from God to prove Jesus right. Jesus replied that the sign God would give would be Jesus' death on the cross and resurrection from the tomb: "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews did not understand that the temple Jesus referred to was his own body. The tent of his body had to be destroyed to open the way to the presence of God for us. Through his death and resurrection, Jesus not only reconciles us with God, but he fills us with his Holy Spirit and makes us temples of the living God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). God's word enlightens our minds and purifies our hearts that we may offer God fitting worship and enjoy his presence both now and forever. Do you burn with zeal for the Lord s house? Next Meeting is November 19th. Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner ***Free*** Saturday, Nov. 22 at 2 pm in the Parish Hall. Please join us for our annual feast sponsored by St. Francis de Sales Parish and the Phoenicia Rotary. Menu is Turkey, Stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, vegetables, cranberry sauce and more. Come, eat, see old friends, make new friends, good conversation and most of all ENJOY. Do you know anyone who is a shut-in and can t attend? We will deliver them a turkey dinner. DESSERTS WELCOMED. Call Cheryl at Eucharistic Ministers Meeting: There will be a short training/refresher session AFTER the 5 pm Mass on Saturday, November 29th, and between Masses on Sunday November 30 th (start time at 10 am). Please make an effort to attend one of these sessions. Advent Project Help Needed: With this season come our thoughts about outreach to the neediest in our community for Christmas. There are many details involved in this project. Our parish has always been generous in donating our time and treasures. Please let me know if you can help with some tasks. Thank you for your support in this outreach project for our community. Please call Marge Tiso Adult Faith Formation: The next class is Sunday, November 23, 2014 following the 9:00 am Mass. The topic: Getting Ready for Advent the Infancy Narratives. Only two of the four evangelists give us stories about Jesus birth and they are written from very different perspectives. Matthew gives us Magi; Luke gives us angels and shepherds. We will look at these two gospels carefully and delve into the theology that each author wants to convey. Our discussions will make the Christmas story richer and deeper for you. Facilitator is Sr. Catherine Gormley. All are welcome to join us in the Fr. Gorman Hall (in back of the rectory.) St. John Lateran is the pope s church, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides. The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated land he had received from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake and the ravages of war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated until the popes returned from Avignon in the 14th century to find the church and the adjoining palace in ruins. Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in One of Rome s most imposing churches, the Lateran s towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small wooden table on which tradition holds St. Peter himself celebrated Mass.
