2 First Sunday of Advent TODAY S READINGS The days are coming when the LORD will fulfill the promise made to Israel and Judah (Jeremiah 33:14-16). Psalm To you, O Lord, I lift my soul (Psalm 25). Second Reading Abound in love for one another and for all (1 Thessalonians 3:12 4:2). Gospel Stand erect and raise your heads; your redemption is at hand (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36). All rights reserved. BE PREPARED Be prepared. It s that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can t escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these task? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright,JS Paluch Co.Inc. READINGS READINGS FOR FOR THE THE WEEK WEEK Monday: Is 2:1-5; Ps 122:1-9; Mt 8:5-11 Tuesday: Is 11:1-10; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lk 10:21-24 Wednesday: Is 25:6-10a; Ps 23:1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Thursday: Is 26:1-6; Ps 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, Friday: Is 29:17-24; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; Mt 9:27-31 Saturday: Gn 3:9-15, 20; Ps 98:1-4; Eph 1:3-6, 11-12; Lk 1:26-38 Sunday: Bar 5:1-9; Ps 126:1-6; Phil 1:4-6, 8-11; Lk 3:1-6 All rights reserved. THE PROMISE OF JUSTICE We are in fairly good company when we ask God for justice. Often enough we hear and agree with the lament of the people of Israel asking God why the wicked prosper. However, when we call out for justice, we usually want someone to get his or her comeuppance. God s justice is something other than this, of course. God s justice comprises a wonderful rightness between God and humankind. Today, Jeremiah looks ahead to a time when a just one will sprout from the shornoff stump of Jesse of the house and family of David. Life was not fair in Jeremiah s time. Israel s kings held the promise of God s fidelity, but it was difficult to see how God s promise could be realized through them. Nevertheless, Jeremiah lifts his voice and announces that the Promised One will come. Luke s Gospel echoes that announcement, and Paul is filled with sturdy encouragement. And so Advent begins with a promise. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ADVENT ABCs If motivation is the key to success, then the season of Advent starts our liturgical year out right by focusing our attention on the ultimate reason for our hope and all we do as Christians. The first reading and the Gospel reassure us that the Messiah will cover the earth in justice at the end of time. This may be a frightening prospect to those who are blameworthy, but to the Lord s holy ones it is a reason to stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand (Luke 21:28). The scriptures also reveal the ABCs of arriving at our goal. In the full text of today s psalm each verse starts with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet from A to Z. That made it easy to learn by heart the psalm s instruction on following God s way of faithful love. Today s New Testament scriptures also instruct us in what we must do to be blameless in holiness at the coming of our Lord Jesus (1 Thessalonians 3:13). All rights reserved. ************************************* COME, LORD JESUS! We are to be vigilant, expecting Christ to come into our lives at every moment. We are to abound in love for one another, working constantly for the coming of Christ s love into our relationships and communities. And we are to stand erect and pray without fear for the coming of the end of time, when the Lord Jesus will come bringing perfect justice and peace. Christians in the first centuries of the church prayed the acclamation, Come, Lord Jesus! The Advent season invites us to enter into this spirit of hopeful expectation for the advent of Christ s reign. During this season of Advent we remember Jesus first coming in time, we anticipate Christ s coming at the end of time, and we pray with hopeful expectation for our lives right now: Come, Lord Jesus! 4 Saint James Intercisus Saint James Intercisus, also known as Saint James the Mutilated (died 421) was a Persian saint. His surname, Intercisus, is derived from the Latin word for "cut into pieces," which refers to the manner of his martyrdom: he was slowly cut into twenty-eight pieces. He survived this loss of limbs before being ultimately beheaded. Tradition states that he was a military officer and courtier to Yazdegerd I who had apostatized after this ruler began to persecute Christians. Under the influence of his Christian family, however, he expressed his faith to Yazdegerd's successor, Bahram V, and was tortured and killed. [1] His death started the Roman-Sassanid War ( ). He was killed in Gundishapur. The ruins of this city are near Dezful, Iran. James' story is recounted in The Golden Legend. The Church of St. James Intercisus in the Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem is dedicated to him. [2] The Monastery of St. Jacob Persian in Sireţi, Străşeni Moldova, the Monastery of St. Jacob Persian in Deddeh, Lebanon and the monastery of St James the Mutilated in Qara, Syria are all dedicated to him. ************************************************************************* TÇzxÄ güxx From the Angel Tree set up in the foyer of the Church, please select an ornament, and purchase a $20 local merchant gift card, which will make this Christmas special for our diocesan assisted living residents. 5 THOUGHTS / PRAYERS STEWARDSHIP Advent Prayer Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a wonder at the wisdom and power of Your Father and ours. Receive my prayer as part of my service of the Lord who enlists me in God s own work for justice. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a hunger for peace; peace in the world, peace in my home, peace in myself. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me a joy responsive to the Father s joy. I seek His will so I can serve with gladness, singing and love. Come, long-expected Jesus. Excite in me the joy and love and peace it is right to bring to the manger of my Lord. Raise I me, too, sober reverence for the God who acted there, hearty gratitude for the life begun there, and spirited resolution to serve the Father and Son. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose advent I hail. Amen. Catholic Online, catholic.org/prayers **************************************************************************** Don t Just Sit There. Wait for the Lord, be strong, and let your heart take courage. Psalm 27:14 In our personal lives, waiting is not a very popular pastime. Waiting is not something we anticipate or experience with great joy and gladness! In fact, most of us consider waiting a waste of time. Perhaps this is because the culture in which we live is basically saying, Get going! Do something! Show you are able to make a difference! Don t just sit there and wait! So, for us and for many people, waiting is a dry desert between where we are and where we want to be. We do not enjoy such a place. We want to move out of it and do something worthwhile. Dear Lord, help me be patient as I await your arrival. *********************************************** PRAYER FOR A HAPPY DEATH Lord Jesus, grant us the grace always to follow the example of the Holy Family, so that at the hour of our death Mary your loving Mother, together with blessed Joseph, may come with you to meet us and to escort us to the light, happiness & peace of heaven, where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit, One God for ever and ever. Amen Come, O Lord! In joy you shall go forth, in peace you shall be brought home. Isaiah 55:12 Lord, lead me and I will follow! ************************************************ TIME OF PREPARATION This life is the time of our preparation for our future state. Our souls will continue for ever what we make them in this world. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Occasionally, someone raises a surprised complaint that while Christmas arrives on Santa s sleigh at the Macy s parade on Thanksgiving Day, the Church doesn t catch on too fast. They may even say that Advent is a new fangled idea. Not so. To trace its beginnings, we have to go back to the fourth or fifth century in France (then Gaul), when Epiphany was the favored day, next to Easter, for baptism. The old pagan structures of Rome were collapsing then, and many people sought to be baptized. Since adults always prepared for baptism by fasting, folks counted back a few weeks for a kind of retreat. Before too long, bishops were advising everyone to attend church frequently beginning on December 17. Soon, artists were imagining ways of expressing the Advent mystery, and in Italy this gave rise to beautiful mosaics of empty thrones awaiting the arrival of the Lord of all creation. Advent as we know it develops on two separate tracks: the first having to do with our spiritual preparation for celebrating the Christmas feast, and the second having to do with the way this is organized and expressed in the liturgical readings and prayers every day of the season. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. ********************************************** Be calm in your waiting; let your hearts be strong; because the coming of the Lord is near. James 5:8
