2 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time BE OPENED The miracle that Jesus performs in today s Gospel is intimately linked with the proclamation of the first reading from Isaiah. The prophetic signs of God s coming to save the people include the rejoicing of all of nature: its dry places become gardens and its deserts pools of water. Those who are deaf will hear and the mute will sing God s praises. For Isaiah these are messianic signs, signs that God has come among us. Jesus heals the deaf man and enables him to hear and speak. This is not just an individual healing, but a prophetic sign that God has come to save us. The Hebrew version of Jesus name is Yeshua, God saves. He comes not only to heal physical ailments, but to open the ears of those who cannot or will not hear the saving word of God. He comes to open our eyes to the saving action of God and to open our lips to proclaim praise. HERE IS YOUR GOD Nature itself will proclaim the saving power of God, and the poor are the first to hear and rejoice in God s saving work. Those who are powerless against nature, disease, tyranny, and injustice are the ones who most welcome Jesus ministry. Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom? (James 2:5). Fear can move us to seek power and to oppress others. The first step in overcoming our fear is to recognize our weakness and our poverty before God. Instead of embracing power and oppression, we can welcome the saving work of God in our lives and in our world. Our ears will hear the good news of the gospel of peace, and our tongues will proclaim the saving power of God. In our weakness is God s strength. Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith & heirs to the kingdom? ~James 2:5 All rights reserved. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Be strong, fear not! SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES The phrase Sunday best has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it s a healthy sign that we re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. CHANGE OF HEART Today s Gospel reading is difficult for some people to understand. We can accept that we must carry the cross and follow Jesus, but why does he say that we must hate our parents, spouses, children, and even life itself to be his disciple? Hate is such a powerful word with many emotional overtones. Perhaps the author of the Gospel used another word and hate is just a mistranslation? But no: the word in the original Greek is miseo and it does mean hate. Most scripture scholars believe that Jesus was deliberately exaggerating to make his point hit home. Human beings often cling to relationships and possessions, and these come to occupy the primary place in their hearts the place where God is meant to be. Where God is displaced in the believer s heart, true discipleship is almost impossible. Think of these examples: the woman who focuses all her attention on her children and ignores her husband; the man who spends every evening and weekend drinking; the young couple who are so in love that they notice no one except each other; the person who hoards things to compensate for the loss or lack of relationships. All these are temporary displacements, but if they harden into habit they can keep people from a life with God. Attending Mass regularly, saying frequent prayers, and keeping all the commandments are excellent habits, but they do not bring us closer to God unless our hearts are changed and God takes first place there. Such a change is true conversion, allowing us to become Jesus disciples. As disciples, we carry a cross sometimes a dramatic process but more often a deliberate day-to-day effort to reorder our priorities and the way we live. Jesus first, others next, yourself last is a life that spells J-O-Y. Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

4 St. Ignatius of Antioch St. Ignatius of Antioch-Little is known for certain about the early life of Ignatius, but he was probably born in Syria. One tradition holds that Ignatius was the child whom Jesus called over when he said to the Apostles: unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven. (Matt. 18:3) It is believed that when Ignatius reached adulthood, he was converted by either Peter or Paul or John. Bible scholars do know that Ignatius was the Bishop of Antioch either the second or third to hold the office and that he was called Theophoros, which means God bearer. During Christian persecutions in 107, Ignatius was arrested and brought to trial. Because he refused to deny his faith and worship Rome s gods, he was sentenced to death. Letters to the Church On the way to Rome, under Roman guard, Ignatius wrote seven letters to Christians in Rome and to churches in Asia Minor, urging unity. These letters have survived. Ignatius welcomed his martyrdom, knowing it would bring him to Christ. He begged his friends not to interfere. He wrote: I am corresponding with all the churches and bidding them all realize that I am voluntarily dying for God if, that is, you do not interfere. I plead with you, do not do me an unreasonable kindness. Let me be fodder for wild beasts that is how I can get to God. I am God s wheat and I am being ground by the teeth of wild beasts to make a pure loaf for Christ. (Ignatius s Letter to the Romans 4:1) His wishes were respected, and Ignatius was martyred in the Coliseum at Rome. PRAYER Heavenly Father, let me commit myself fully to you. As St. Ignatius advised, do not let me talk of Jesus Christ but set my heart on the world. Like him, may my desires be crucified and no passion for the world burn in my heart. I pray that I may take no delight in corruptible food orin the dainties of this life, but that, like St. Ignatius, I may hunger only for God s bread, which is the flesh of Christ, who came from David s line, and drink only his blood an immortal love feast indeed. I ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Other Events & Diocesan News Centennial News-Sunday September 2, 2018 Anniversary of Fr. Lafleur On September 7, 1944, Fr. 5 THOUGHTS / PRAYERS STEWARDSHIP Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs to the kingdom? James 2:5 ************************************************ PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL ADOPTION OF A BABY IN DANGER OF ABORTION O Mary, O Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Unborn, I ask through your intercession that I might be able to adopt spiritually a child in danger of abortion, that its life might be spared. For nine months I will pray daily for him (her). During my life on earth this child will be known only to God, but one day in the life to come I pray we shall meet. O Mary, please intercede so that all the persons or forces tempting the mother of this child to abortion will be overcome by the power of truth and grace. I pray this in the name of your own precious Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (This prayer was inspired by the practice of spiritual adoption urged by the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen) ************************************************** PRAYER TO BE AN EXAMPLE OF LOVE Lord Jesus, as my children watch me, what sort of man do they see? Someone wrapped up in his own enjoyments and pursuits? Or a man living for the sake of others? Lord, please may it be the latter. Help me to have a generous and giving heart, a love that shows itself in both word and deed, starting with my wife and children and extending especially to my neighbor in need. Lord God, may I imitate You, Who came not to be served, but to serve. Amen. ************************************************** PRAYER TO ST. MARIA GORETTI O holy little one of God, St. Maria Goretti, so sweet, so humble, so pure of heart and life. You preferred to die rather than give in to the lust of your attacker. Pray for me, that in this proud and selfish and pleasure-seeking world, I may avoid sin and bear witness to the humble innocence of the Gospel. I ask you to intercede in a special way for my children and for all young people, that they may know the serene joy of purity. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. ************************************************** PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY Oh my Jesus, You said, verily I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you. Behold, in Your name I humbly ask our Heavenly Father to protect every man, woman, and child in our great nation from those who want to delete Your name from our society, i.e. on our money, in our courts, and in our schools. Protect us from plans of destruction from which our enemies have plotted. You, Heavenly Father, are the real foundation of our nation. I thank you for making me a citizen of this land of freedom and unlimited opportunity...which are the results of its Christian base. Please surround and protect us, and our military with Your love and mercy...in Jesus name. Amen. Summer break is over and there is much to accomplish in school and in the workplace. It s a venerable Catholic custom to assign patron saints to the trades and occupations of life. This is largely in the realm of popular devotion, and although from time to time the Vatican declares a saint to be patron of this or that, the process is freewheeling and just about uncontrollable. Still, there is a saint for almost any purpose, whether you are on death row (Dismas), having eye trouble (Lucy), or pursued by poisonous toads (Hubert). Medieval guilds would often associate themselves with heavenly patrons, so Saint Joseph has the carpenters, Thomas More the lawyers, and physicians get Saint Luke. If you re stuck in the airport, St. Joseph of Cupertino is on call since he was said to rise off the floor when he prayed, and if you re in a long line at the ATM, Saint Anthony Claret is for you. In recent years, the Vatican has from time to time assigned a new patronage, as when Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was named the patron of HIV-AIDS patients, since as a young Jesuit novice he had cared for his fellow novices during a terrible plague. Anything that matters to us nation, parish church, occupation, illness can have a patron, and it is an aspect of Catholicism that has enormous appeal. To believe in the communion of saints is to know that the ties that bind us as a communion do not unravel with death, and that when we stand before life s struggles, we do not stand alone. Who is your patron saint? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

7 I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW / God longs to erupt through us into the lives of others Bishop Robert J. Hermann stlewisreview.com The readings for the 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time show us a God who is waiting to break into our lives so as to reveal His mercy and saving power, if only we give Him the chance. In the first reading, Isaiah tells the Israelites that their suffering at the hands of the Assyrians will end. Isaiah uses physical imagery to convey spiritual transformation. "Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared," he says. "Then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing." When God frees the Israelites from foreign oppression, He also frees them from spiritual blindness and enables them to hear His voice. Their falling away from Him led to the Assyrian invasion and their enslavement. Still using physical imagery, Isaiah says: "Streams will burst forth in the desert and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water." Yes, the desert is unfriendly to man and threatens his life; however, a spiritual desert of refusing God's mercy is far worse. God wishes to inundate the Israelites with spiritual riches to enable them to return to the God of the Covenant. These spiritual riches energize them and flow into physical healings, as a manifestation of God's saving presence. The Gospel presents Jesus faithful to His mission of teaching and of demonstrating the mercy of His Father. For three years, journeying throughout Palestine and beyond, Jesus exudes the Father's mercy in teaching relentlessly about the kingdom of the Father and then demonstrating the power behind those teachings by His miracles and healings. In the Gospel, the people "brought to Him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged Him to lay His hand on him." These people had seen exceptionally good things happen through Jesus, so they have confidence that He will heal the deaf-mute. In His compassion for the man, Jesus "took him off by himself away from the crowd." He wanted to give this poor man privacy and spare him embarrassment. What happened in this privacy is truly amazing: "He put his finger into the man's ear and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, 'Ephphatha!" that is 'Be opened!' And immediately the man's ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly." You might think, "I sure would like to have seen Jesus do that!" Let me tell you, you have experienced Jesus doing this to you again and again. Each time, in the privacy of the confessional, He hears you humbly acknowledge your sins then forgive you. That forgiveness is far greater than healing a speech impediment. Jesus' power didn't become less with His death and Resurrection, but only greater. Today, He is ministering to hundreds of Christians around the world. He might be invisible, but He isn't ineffective. He is willing to give us far more than we ask. However, if it doesn't have the glitz of the television, we don't want to see it. The letter of James in the second reading demonstrates His presence since the Resurrection. We're explicitly told that if we have faith, we should recognize Jesus in the poor, and should not discriminate by outward appearances. Christ is very much alive all around us, but if our faith is weak, we don't see Him in the poor. "The Lord hears the cry of the poor," Scripture states. He hears the cry of the poor and sends them to us so that we allow Jesus in us to reach out to them. Just think of what a gift we are to the poor. They know that they depend totally upon God for their next meal. This total dependence gives them the humility to readily accept from us our love expressed in prayer. Just think of what a gift the poor are to us. They remind us of God's exceptional goodness in giving us gifts which we share with them. However, if we antiseptically give something to a poor person we view as accosting us, we haven't given it to Jesus at all. We gave it to them so they would go away. Even if we don't have money, or if we deem money would be used for alcohol or drugs, we still have many options. What about treating them to a meal at McDonalds? What about sharing the meal with them and then praying with and for them? Why not ask them right there to pray for you. This should fill their hearts with great meaning. Wherever we go, God longs to erupt through us into the lives of others. We're the kingdom of heaven loaded with gifts of mercy for which others hunger. We're needed not only by the physically poor but also family members by whom we feel offended. Or co-workers we feel have betrayed us. Jesus wants us to give Him away every day. In a sense, God has made each of us a spiritual Santa Claus, and we are to "give freely what we have received."
