STAPLE DIET SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER 2016 Staple Hill Corps The Mission Statement As a resurgent Salvation Army in Staple Hill we: Reach Up to Love Jesus, Reach Out to Share Jesus, Reach Deeper to Follow Jesus, Reach Wider to Love Each Other Our Values: Our Identity and God-given mission as disciples of Jesus Christ are shaped by the values of the Kingdom of God. We love God with all our heart, soul, strength and Mind, and we love our neighbour as ourselves. Therefore, we are: Respectful, Enthusiastic, Adventurous, Courageous, Honest & Hospitable. Our Vision: By Summer 2017 to corporately and personally reach up and out and deeper and wider towards the goal which Christ has called us to by getting into SHAPE.

From the desk of the Editor There is song, which is now included in the song book, called Be Glorified, the words of which keep coming back to me. The words of the first verse say: In my life, Lord, Be Glorified, Be Glorified, In My Life Lord, Be Glorified today. I was first introduced to the song through Salvation Brass when creating a visual presentation to the band piece of the same title this piece of music is now also played by Staple Hill band. On the Sunday morning of Territorial Music School, when I was up early and doing my morning site checks, I sat at the piano in the chapel, got out the tune book and played the same tune. Territorial Commander, Clive Adams, also used the song during morning worship, which he led. Back at the Corps, and following on from Music School, the song was used again during morning worship. Is this all by chance? I don t think it is. I believe the changes we are going through as a Corps are firmly God led, and perhaps through this song God is reminding us to always glorify him through all that we do. The second verse of the song reminds us of this: In our Church, Lord, Be Glorified, Be Glorified, In our Church, Lord, Be Glorified today. Neil Baker, Editor Staple Diet

As I write this is I am aware that today, Thursday, 1 st September, is the first day of Autumn. Different people have different times of the year that they enjoy - some like the summer, with opportunities to sit on the beach and relax, rewind and refresh; others like the Autumn, with the golden colours of browns and yellows and russets; others like crisp Winter mornings and the chance of building snowmen (or women mine tend to look like monsters); or Spring when everything starts growing again. In my experience, Churches go through seasons, and since launching our Mission strategy, I feel that Spring has arrived. We have seen many new shoots appearing as more and more people engage with our 4 strands of Mission Making: Reach Up to Love Jesus Reach Out to Share Jesus Reach Deeper to Follow Jesus Reaching Wider to Love Each Other Or our 3 strands of Mission Enabling Organisation, Communication and Business. I hope that you are excited by the momentum that God is creating within our Church as we become a resurgent Army. For those yet to get on board, I would encourage you to do so and spring into action. In Ecclesiastes 3 we read: 3 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9 What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart It is my belief that now is Staple Hill s time. On a practical note, September is a month when we get back to normal following the summers break; a new start for some with the new text books, school uniform and new teachers and for some new schools. Our prayers are with all those returning to school either as pupils or workers. September is also when many of our community activities recommence - this is an important part of our corps/church ministry as we Reach Out to Share Jesus, and is only possible with the valuable support of many volunteers, for which we give thanks. However, we need your help in many aspects of our community work - please speak with Nicola or myself if you feel able to help. September is also the time we can collect door-to-door for the Big Collection and THQ has set our total at So far we have collected over 4000 of this and we need your help with the final push. Teams will be going out in different areas, so keep an eye on the notice board and help where possible. Thank you. Every blessing Majors Colin Hylton-Jones Corps Officers

News about People Those currently on the Wish you were here prayer list are: Irene Ackerman, Molly Angle, Tom and Ruth Cable, Nancy Cryer, Geoffrey Driscoll, Joan & David Jones, Joyce Lear, Gwen Lear, David & Shirley Nokes, Madge Rickards, Michael Roberts, Valerie Scott, Francis & Ruth Shepherd. Just before the summer break Major Colin Hylton-Jones commissioned Senan Hylton & Jeovany Thomas as YP Band members, both have been keen to play their instruments, it was also lovely to know that Jeovany invited a school friend to the morning meeting to see him being made a member. Congratulations to Hannah & Nick Fortt-Brewer on their recent marriage. The service was conducted by Major Janet Thompson and Major Colin Hylton-Jones with Major Nicola and her mum Major Yvonne Jones also taking part. We wish you both well as you embark on the future as Mr & Mrs. Well done to Adam Dickens on passing his Driving Test and to Carys Hylton on passing her Grade 6 Speaking, Verse and Prose. For almost 23 years Pauline Perkins has led firstly the parent and toddlers and then Baby Song, this after many years as primary sergeant and YPSM. Pauline has now relinquished her duty as Baby Song Leader, always supported by husband Bob. In celebration and recognition of her service to the corps and leadership, Pauline was presented with a special cake, flowers, hand print picture and gifts. Thank you Pauline, enjoy your rest and like someone said until you are asked to do something else! The Wedding of Philip James & Natasha Bennett will take place on Saturday 24 th September at 2pm in Natasha s home corps of William Booth Memorial Halls, Nottingham. The service will be conducted by Majors Colin & Nicola. We wish you a lovely day and God s blessing on you both. On the same day, 24 th September Mike Dyer will celebrate his 75 th Birthday. Congratulations and have a special day.

Our thoughts and prayers have been with the following people and their families who in recent days have lost family members: Harry Brooksbank (daughter) and Rachael James (mother) on the promotion to glory of Pauline Ellcoat. Harry s son, David, and his wife were welcomed to a meeting after coming over from the USA for Pauline s Funeral. Frank Mills with the passing of his wife, Clare. Frank also attended the morning meeting recently and was at the recent Page Park Praise. Tom Cable with the passing of his sister, Christine. Bev Dickens and family with the passing of her Grandad. May you all feel God s Comfort with you at this sad time. Emily Hall has now moved to the Midlands as she prepares for the future - she will be soldiering at Cannock Corps. We wish you well as you take the next step in your life. We wish all our young people well as they commence another year of Education and trust that your recent exam results have been what you had hoped for! 11 A Youthful Summer 2016 We have once again had representation from the corps at Junior Adventure Camp, South-Western School of Christian Arts (SWSCA) and Territorial Music School (TMS). Here are their experiences. Junior Adventure Camp Senan Hylton The theme this year for junior camp was celebration which brought Christmas, Easter and birthday spirit to all the staff and children. The first day we got there the staff greeted us with open arms and games to play! After that we all enjoyed finding out what teams we were in - I was the only one from Staple Hill in the yellow team - then we made Olympic flags which we used later on in the day. Then we had the Olympic opening ceremony and after that we had our first break during which I played with Joseph and Jeovany up in their rooms (I was put in the same room as Jeovany). In the afternoon we had the Olympic games in which we did land synchronised swimming, an obstacle course in which green team won (booooo!). Then we had the evening meal which the quiz night followed and a good night's sleep! The rest of the week was so fun but I'll just tell you the highlights)! The beacon activities were the most fun so I'll tell you them first! First we did archery and then wood craft. Next we did crate stack and wall climbing on Tuesday. Then after that on Thursday we did the zip line (which towered at 120 feet) and finally the beach in which we made sculptures of our leaders! Then there were the evening activities in which we... Watched the Grinch (film night), quiz night, talent show, discos and a prayer space! Next I'll tell you about the topics we had! First we had the Olympic Opening Ceremony on the first day then on the second day we had Christmas which was the best day ever! After that we had Easter which was absolutely amazing! Then we had Pentecost which I loved! Then, finally we had the Olympic Closing Ceremony on the final day. So there you go, that was my week at junior camp 2016!

SWSCA Aimee Bessex & Joe Saint 'Welcome to Paradise', was the theme of SWSCA 2016, in which we looked at the Bible as a whole. Although there were often no palm trees, glorious sunshine or golden sands, the week sure was captivating. Although we were yet again 2 hours late for arrival (classic Bessex style) we made it in time for the opening worship session. This involved a first gathering of our cell groups who we would meet with every day and discuss the Bible story of the day. As well as this, some catchy worship songs, funky dancing and silly ice breakers. This year the streams were media, drama, dance, band, art, sport and choral. As well as attending these sessions a couple of times a day, this year we had the opportunity to choose between some workshops. For example: card making, gaming, yoga, aerobics, jogging and worship band. This gave us the opportunity to speak to some new or different people at SWSCA. After each day, the seniors and juniors would meet and have evening prayers. During this time, we were able have moments of reflection where we would go around and thank God for one thing (this often related to what the biblical story was of the day). One night the seniors had their prayer time in the chapel, this building gave the perfect atmosphere for the members of senior house to bring forward their prayers of disruption because of break downs between families, friends and societies. Similarly, the cell groups designated each day to a different topic in the Bible, such as community, Jesus, Israel, disruption etc. This was a great chance to debate and discuss different issues and opinions surrounding our responsibility as a church family. A highlight of this year was the paint war in which we had the opportunity to cover both the staff and our friends in powdered and liquid paint. The idea was to create the 'Welcome to Paradise' logo on the ground using a giant stencil as well as having a laugh at the same time. The cleaners didn't like us much though...let's just say we are praying not to receive a bill in the post regarding the now rainbow coloured shower curtains. The fancy dress and silent disco

were also favourites- the only opportunity to see Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head dancing to the cha cha slide! After a jam-packed activity filled week, the final celebration crept up on us. This gave each stream and its members the chance to show their skills, as well as displaying how God has used them to praise him. Overall it was a great opportunity to show our friends and families what an amazing week we had, how we have grown spiritually and how we can use our talents to praise God and at the same time have fun. TMS A Staff Perspective Neil Baker Once again I had the honour and privilege to serve on the TMS Staff Team as Logistics Co-ordinator for the 4 th Time - it s a role I find pleasure in as I get a lot more rest than some but then also just get on with what needs to be done. The first day is always hard work as we have to make sure we are set up ready for the student arrival but also for our welcome meeting. We take our time and welcome the students, renewing friendships and making new ones. There are many highlights from the week as always and this year didn t disappoint. A prayer of mine for many years has been an increase of numbers, especially for first timers and this year my prayer was answered - out of the 118 students, 44 were first timers at TMS which was great to see, especially when they were asked to stand at the welcome meeting. The Theme of TMS was Transformation and on the Tuesday I was privileged to give my testimony in Morning Worship. I started on that theme by pointing out my

physical transformation which was a good ice breaker especially for those who never met me before but then moved on to my spiritual transformation, especially in the last 3 years, that everything happens for a reason and that If you have a goal in life and you put your mind to it, god will strengthen you to see it through to the very end. Part of my role is to set up the various areas for the school for our activities and this includes putting out the chairs for our Mid-Week Festival. After I had done so and in awaiting the arrival of Friends and family for those at TMS, it was commented that on previous year s attendance should we take chairs away so it would look full, I replied by saying I had a feeling we would need the 160 that were out and in the end we only had about 10 free chairs so another step of faith where God supported us and another answer to prayer. As Kara said in her report, our Thursday evening worship always never ceases to disappoint as this year we had a record number of testimonies how God is working and transforming the lives of the youngsters of TMS, as a staff member we get to be alongside those who need prayer or conversations about their faith or personal issues and God is really working in our young people and from what I witnessed at TMS 2016 the youth of The Salvation Army is The Salvation Army of Today, as we continue to nurture our young people at Staple Hill they are the Staple Hill Salvation Army of Today and the Future. Overall TMS 2016 brought abundant blessings with record numbers attending and God visibly working in the lives of the Young People, I pray that God will continue to work and use them to support each other and again next year encourage more first timers to TMS. In our Church, Lord, Be Glorified Today!

My name is Lucy and I m 14. When I started a petition earlier this year asking Tesco to stop selling eggs from caged hens I never imagined that 280,000 people would sign it or that I would get a face to face meeting with Tesco's Head of Agriculture. But it all really happened and now the supermarket giant has pledged to stop selling eggs from caged hens! This is an incredible moment and I can t thank everyone that backed me enough. Now with this victory secured, I believe we can get all UK supermarkets to stop selling eggs from caged hens: Morrisons and Asda, still intend to sell caged eggs without any obvious intent to change. So I have started a new petition calling for Asda and Morrisons to stop selling eggs from caged hens. Please join me. Caged eggs come from hens that spend 72 weeks cramped in restrictive cages, unable to spread their wings or experience the outside world. After this time, many of the hens are barely feathered and close to death. No animal deserves to live like this. The fact that Tesco, the biggest supermarket in Britain, has decided to stop selling caged hens eggs proves that no matter how big the company, the prospect of a free-range future is not impossible. The power to make this change is in our hands, now it is clear that supermarkets really do listen to public pressure I know we can make this change happen again. From Lucy Gavaghan This shows just what a 14 year old can do. Can we all support her by not buying eggs from caged birds Alan Richardson
