4 The 7 Most Important Days in History Sunday and Monday The Triumphal Entry Luke 19:28-48 March 17, 2019 Our Luke Mini-Series PASSION WEEK The 7 Most Important Days in History Date Message Topic Text Mar 17 Sunday and Monday The Triumphal Entry Luke 19:28-48 Mar 24 Tuesday Opposition from Religious People Luke 20:1-47 Mar 31 Tuesday The Apocalyptic Discourse Luke 21:1-38 (Guest speaker: Dr. Paul Nyquist) Apr 7 Wednesday & Thursday The Lord s Supper Luke 22:1-53 Apr 14 Friday The Crucifixion Luke 22:54-23:56 Apr 20/21 Sunday The Resurrection Luke 24:1-53 More Grace Fellowship sermons can be found at whatisgrace.org Four Questions to Ask Myself as Jesus Rides into Jerusalem (Luke 19:28-48) 1. Will I all that I am and have for the Lord s use? (vv.28-34) The owners of the brand new colt let Jesus followers use it for the Lord s purposes. Application #1 Lord, all that I have and all that I am is Yours! I am listening for Your voice, The Lord has need of it. You can have my car, my house, my money, my keys, my talents, my gifts, my time, my children, my grandchildren, and me all for Your purposes. 2. Will I, trust, and worship Jesus as the Messiah? (vv.35-40) Everything about this scene is screaming to us that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah: (1) His riding on a never-ridden-on colt was the act of a regal King; (2) His riding on a colt was the fulfillment of the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 about the coming Messiah; (3) The crowds chanting and quoting Psalm 118:25-27 are chants about the Messiah. Kent Hughes: Jesus was unequivocally identifying Himself as the Messiah. The choice of the donkey identified Him with
5 kings in the royal line of David, and especially with David himself, because the donkey was regarded as a royal animal before and during David s reign. The use of a donkey also speaks of Jesus inner spirit: gentle and riding on a donkey (Zech. 9:9). The fact that the donkey was borrowed further enhanced this idea. There was a remarkable blending of Jesus dignity and poverty in this. Jesus chose the donkey because it beautifully portrayed both His position as King and His character as servant. When Jesus dies on the cross, you are going to be tempted to give up hope and think that God has lost control and has been defeated. The events of this Palm Sunday will help you remember and believe in Jesus as Messiah and to believe that God has not lost control: (1) He predicted 500 years in advance that He would ride into Jerusalem on a colt (Zechariah 9:9); (2) He predicted hours in advance where the colt would be and how the owners would respond (Luke 19:29-34); (3) He predicted 40 years in the advance the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD (Luke 19:43-44). The only proper response to this presentation of Jesus is to believe and trust and worship Him (vv.36-40). Application #2 My response to Jesus: Jesus, I believe that you are the long-awaited Messiah, the Son of the Living God. Jesus, I trust You even though my life seems out of control (just like the events of the last days of Your life). Jesus, I worship You!!! I declare, Blessings to You, my King and my Lord. Glory to You in the highest!! 3. Will I Jesus compassion, and will I that compassion to others? (vv.41-44) Warren Wiersbe: While the crowd was rejoicing, Jesus was weeping! He uttered a loud lamentation like one mourning over the dead. Jonah looked on Nineveh and hoped it would be destroyed (Jonah 4), while Jesus looked at Jerusalem and wept because it had destroyed itself. John Piper: Jesus mercy is tenderly moved. Jesus is more emotionally complex than we think He is. He really feels the sorrow of a situation. No doubt there is a deep inner peace that God is in control and that God s wise purposes will come to pass. But that doesn t mean you can t cry. I appeal to you: pray that God would give you tears. There is so much pain in the world. So much suffering far from you
6 and near you. Pray that God would help you be tenderly moved. Jesus felt enough compassion for Jerusalem to weep. If you haven t shed any tears for somebody s losses but your own, it probably means you re pretty wrapped up in yourself. So, let s repent of our hardness and ask God to give us a heart that is tenderly moved. Application #3 My response to Jesus tears: Jesus, I receive Your tears over my situation thank You for your tender mercy and compassion for me. Jesus, please give me Your tears for other people s pain. Give me a heart that is tenderly moved. Jesus, please give me Your tears for the sinfulness and self-destruction of my nation. Give me a heart that weeps and intercedes for my country. 4. Will I my temple and my local church s temple as a house of prayer for all nations? (vv.45-48) Jesus is quoting Isaiah 56:7 My house will be a house of prayer for all nations. Jesus declared these words over the literal temple of His day. The Bible tells us that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Application #4 Lord, help me be a house of prayer for all nations in my personal temple and help my local church be a house of prayer for all nations. An expression of house of prayer for all nations that I am sensing God s prompting in my life is Having a daily time of prayer and worship with the Lord; Engaging in Audience of One: Praying for our unreached people groups: The Ban*jar, Bug*is, Makas*ar, Raj*put; Going on a cross-cultural mission trip: Praying on-the-spot for others when they express a need to me; Being a part of a small group that is studying God s Word, praying for each other, and praying for the nations.
